Hi all!
For those of you who have sailed out of NYC on DCL, can you share your thoughts? My family and I have been on 5 Disney cruises - all out of Port Canaveral. Most of them have been smooth sailing, but this past trip we were on the sea and wind were pretty rough. I take seasickness pills but I still felt pretty crappy for most of the trip. We booked our next cruise onboard and planned on sailing out of NY to Canada or the Bahamas. For some reason I'm imagining sailing up and down the East Coast as being more rough than the Bahamas/Caribbean. I'd love to hear how your trip was if you sailed out of NY, especially since they've been on the Magic which is a much smaller ship than the Dream or Fantasy. Thanks so much!

Sailed out of NYC in 2012, I was fine and I have seasickness issues.
Just took my Bonine nightly and it was smooth sailing, no problems at all.
NYC is an amazing port to sail of out, the views are spectacular!

Have fun. :)

I'm not going to lie, I thought it was rougher than the sailings to the Bahamas from PC. There was one night that the creaking in my cabin from the rocking woke me up. But I've seen others say it is no different.
I will throw out there that if you are in the NYC area, sailing from there is so easy without the extra travel to Florida. It might be worth it to you to ask your doctor for something stronger.

We were on the Magic on Halloween last year, I didn't notice any issues with the motion of the ship. It was definitely not worse than other cruises, it was a non-factor. I agree with lorimay that sailing out of New York is really something special. Even if you are not from the New York area (we aren't) it's so special. After doing it last year, we couldn't get signed up again fast enough.

Thanks everyone! We live about 90 minutes outside of NYC so there are several positives for sailing out of that port. My only two worries were the motion of the ship since the Magic is smaller and also I've recently read about problems with the staterooms on the Magic having mechanical issues bc it's an older ship.

Sorry to jump on your post but I am curious for the NYC cruisers if there is enough to do. I assume you can't really go in the pools because it wouldn't be warm enough when they do sail from NYC. We live in the NYC area so I would love to do one out of here someday but it feels contrary to what I think of when I think of cruising. I say this having never been on DCL and only done RCCL. We considered waiting until later in the year and going out of NYC but the potential cold weather put me off a bit.

We did a cruise out of NYC last year. I can't really help with sea sickness as I don't get seasick but it was fairly rocky one night. However, a pretty major hurricane was also working its way up the east coast at the time so it was understandable. I've never been on a cruise out of PC to compare.

My son swam several days. Once he was the only one but the last sea day was pretty crowded in the pools. Hot tubs were nice too. We had no trouble at all keeping ourselves busy but it was our first cruise. And we went north to Canada so it's not like we were going to a warmer climate. I was totally fine outside with just a warm hoody (didn't need a jacket at all) for the whole trip. Often the decks seemed empty but I spent lots of time outside.

Our next 2 cruises we specifically booked to have extra sea days because we like them.

I live about 30 minutes from the Manhattan port and have sailed out of NYC a few different times. In 2012 I sailed on the Magic 3 times out of NYC and then again in 2016 I sailed out of NYC 2 times. These were on DCL.

As already stated sailing out of NYC is amazing!!! Add in no airfare and it is a no brainer!!! But, yes, in general I found the waters a bit rougher sailing of NYC than the Caribbean. Nothing earth shaking and nothing that bothered me but I did notice a difference. That said we have had very rough water in the Caribbean on some sailings and mild waters out of NYC so it is a hit or miss thing.

It would never, ever keep me from sailing out of NYC!
