Has anyone gone to the Caribbean from either of these ports? Was the water rough? Worried about seasickness.

From Boston you can only got to Bermuda or Canada I think. (NCL)

I have not been on the cruise, but, basically it is one day to cruise to Bermuda, then you stay parked in Bermuda for like 4 or 5 nights, then one day to sail back. So we have been thinking of trying it to see if we can handle cruising. This way, if you hate it or get sea sick, you are only sailing for 2 out of the 7 days and can still enjoy the rest of the trip. OUr friends go every year and love it, no complaints about roughness. You could get one of those patches for behind you ear just in case/ :goodvibes

I've traveled from NYC to Bermuda a few years back and I remember it being quite bumpy one night out of the 5 nights we were on board. Bring medicine and don't look at the water. Otherwise, it was fine.

I have been on 3 cruises, with one of them going out of NY. Now mind you....I get VERY sick sea....very sensitive with motion. Anyway, with that cruise (which was our first) we went to the Bahamas and Bermuda. First day, I was fine. Next morning, we went to one of the restaurants which was in the very back of the boat and the whole back wall was windows. First mistake I did was look out the window and saw the water waving back and forth (not a lot, but enough to make me a bit off...a little dizzy) Needless to say, I went back to my room and slept on & off all day.

I finally took some dramamine and was fine the rest of the week. We did fall in love with cruising and I found that if you take the dramamine THE NIGHT BEFORE you even get on the ship, you'll be absolutely fine. It needs to get in your system before you get sick and it'll work that much better. Than you take one each morning. Easy Peasy!!!

That was in 2006. Then in 2008, we took a Disney Cruise with friends of ours to St. Maarten & St. Thomas. That one left out of Port Canaveral. The motion of the sea was fine except one night/following morning. We were sitting in the dining room that night and kept feeling the boat sway from one side to the next and some of the dishes on the tables falling off. :lmao: That night happened to be A LITTLE much for me. Not too bad but I told my friend to watch my boys so I could go out on deck to get some fresh air. Once I did, I was fine. Was actually watching the front of the ship come way out of the water, up over the waves. It was actually pretty cool. That was the only rough seas we had that trip. And then last year, after a weeks vacation at Disneyworld, we decided to do a 5-night cruise out of Port Canaveral again. This time, just to Nassau. This cruise was perfectly still. Nice & calm. We are taking another cruise in July of this year and we're leaving out of NY again. (We live in CT, so it's much closer and we don't to buy airfaire, so it's much cheaper) Going back to Nassau (not the we love this island, cause we don't LOL but we do love Norwegian Cruise Line's private island!!!)

Sorry for the long winded post. But I thought I'd give you a perspective on what I've experienced. Like I said, a cruise is so much fun. So if you're prone to motion sickness, just pop a dramamine (or bonine, can find both at Walmart) the night before you leave and you should be fine. Just make sure to continue taking it each morning.

Happy Cruising!!!

Went out of Bayonne on a cruise (right across from NYC). Seas weren't too bad. I am prone to motion sickness so I take some pills before I get on. Cruises are very fun so I wouldn't miss one for fear of rough seas. The ships are so big a lot of the time you can't even feel them moving.

I have taken all three of my cruises from the NY/NJ ports and have not gotten sick on the journey to the Caribbean. However, I did get nauseated on the trip between the islands on the last trip. Rough part of the water I guess. It very much depends on the weather. Hope you enjoy!

Yes, we took Holland America from New York to the Caribbean a couple of years ago. Crossing the Atlantic (you cut the corner, but you are absolutely crossing the Atlantic for most of one day, each way) is harrowing. My wife and I were dreadfully seasick both ways. The pool practically emptied because we were rocked back and forth so much.

LOL, I remember on our Disney Cruise, the morning after we had some rough seas, it was still a pretty bumpy ride. But my friend and I put on our bathing suits, headed to the hot tub for a bit and then went in the pool since it was practically empty (I think 1 or 2 people were in it). The water was sloshing back and forth so much it was quite comical actually. The boat would sway one way and all the water would drain out of one end and overflow on the other, then the boat would sway the other way and here comes all of that water that sloshed over the sides at the other end. It was so damn fun though. And for some reason, the motion didn't bother me AT ALL. I'm wondering if it was because I was in the water and making the same motions as the water outside the ship?

But to the OP, don't worry about getting sick. Like I mentioned before, just take something the night before and have yourself a great time!!! Go to cruisecritic dot com and read all you need to know about cruises. It has a message board just like this and is fantastic reading. I'm addicted to it!!! Have fun!!!

I have gone from NYC to Bermuda. We had pretty smooth sailing most of the time. I did start to feel nauseous a few times, but going outside and looking at the horizon helped.

My brother and his wife went and they had really rough ride to Bermuda. They sailed out of NY. He said he was fine, (he kept drinking the whole time, lol, with me that probably would have made it worse) but the rest of the ship were vomiting all over, etc. He said one poor lady was sitting there with her kids and was sick as a dog, as were most of the people. On an up note, I think this is not the norm that it is THAT rough. He said also that he absolutely LOVED Bermuda. My DH and myself have been wanting to go but it's the one issue I'm worried about also, especially since he told me of what happened with him.

I did NCL's Boston to Bermuda on the Majesty in July 2002 and the seas were rough leaving Boston and coming back. I took dramamine and was fine. I am looking to take a cruise to the Carribbean sometime next year, and we would like to leave out of NY or NJ... there are actually quite a few cruise lines that go to the Carribbean out of these port. I have gone on a handful of cruises, and the bigger the ship, the less likely I was to get sick, in my experience. Of course, the weather and the seas play a huge part in it, too.

I have heard the scopolamine patch behind your ear is much better than dramamine (dramamine makes you tired)

I used the patch once and it knocked me out. Bonine has been the best. Take it at night before you go to bed and it works all the next day.

I did a cruise out of NY to Florida and the Bahamas in June a few years back. It was alittle rough maybe one day but the other days I was fine. I think it worse in the spring.
