Cruise industry won't recover until 2030

You have over a 99% chance you aren't going to die of Covid. If you are that scared, please just stay home and quit making things miserable for the rest. Everyone can assess their own level of risk. As far as constitutional law, I see no "right" of risk to the health of others listed in the constitution.
You have to understand, I may be the person you make sick. Stay home. Wear a Mask. Social distance, Our lives depend on it. You will be a lot more miserable sick, or worse.

It is what Constitutional experts say, so yes, it is their expert opinion.
You mean, it's what certain people's opinions, not the Constitution, says. For every "expert" that agrees with that opinion, there is another "expert" that has a different opinion. Supreme Court justices are all certainly expert in their constitutional knowledge, and they disagree on how laws can be applied all the time. There is not a single standard interpretation.

The Constitution is written in English, so we can all read it. I've read it. It doesn't say that at all, anywhere.

You don't know what would make another person more miserable, and have no right to tell them what to do. For me, staying home for several months or more, and missing the opportunity to make wonderful vacation memories with my 16 year-old only child, who won't be at home much longer, would be devastating to me. It would also be devastating to him, as he is overworked by his college-prep high school, hardly gets to go out as his school is online most of the time, and spent much of his childhood struggling to overcome autism. He deserves his vacations and so do I.

I'm already sick with a permanent non-contagious condition that will probably only get worse over time. My life has also been hard in other ways. I've learned to take what joy I can from life, when I have the opportunity. I am not going to cede those opportunities for months or years, because I've learned that the future is never guaranteed. Sorry not sorry if you don't like that.

I'm also a frontline essential worker, probably more in danger from my job every day than from going on vacation. I do my part by wearing a mask and washing my hands. But I'm not going to spend my days off hiding in my home.

If people who are worried about getting sick stay home, the only people who will make them sick are those they live with.
If these selfish free-Dumb attitudes prevail, it'll be a lot longer than 2030.
My father was a veteran of the Normandy invasion. It is good that he believed in freedom and didn't think it was free-Dumb. Otherwise, we might not have the luxury to even go on cruises.

It is such a dishonor to our nation's service people who died fighting for our freedom to call it "free-Dumb".

You have very eloquently laid out some of the high costs of staying home to make some people feel safer. A lot of people only see the purported benefits.

I have had what seem to be endless conversations with people about the wisdom (or lack thereof) of forgoing life, day after day, for the hope of more existence later - a later that you pointed out is never guaranteed.

Actually no. You are most likely to be infected by someone you do not live with according to Dr. Fauci. Someone outside your bubble.

I agree about the first part. But, no our entire system of law is designed to provide structure to give everyone their maximum rights without infringing on someone else's rights. I'm sorry, you do not have the right to do something that makes someone else sick. Forget the law, the constitution, that's just common sense.

Where does it end? Any of our behaviors could conceivably harm someone, either directly or indirectly (think about the butterfly effect). Heck, who knows how many of us have killed people with the flu back before we had "bubbles."

Well, the Spanish Flu was contained in about 18 months. So we know what we need to do, we just don't want to do them. Even the founding fathers used quarantines in the late 1780's to control the small pox pandemic.

How was the Spanish Flu contained? I heard that it infected 500 million people and killed 20 to 50 million people? Was there a vaccine for the Spanish Flu? How long did mask mandates last (I heard 10 days in San Francisco for the first one and that most citizens ignored the second one)?

For smallpox quarantines in the 1780's - did they quarantine sick people or everyone?

Some of these nuances would be interesting to know.

Vaccines hadn't been invented yet for any illness.. Masks were required. A $5 fine if you got caught without one. That would be an $86 dollar fine in today's dollars.

Thanks for answering.

How long did the mask mandates last? I can see people doing them for a while, but eventually tiring of them.

And, what about quarantines of well people during the smallpox outbreak in the 1780s?

I have no idea how long the mask mandate will last. My mom was a surgical nurse. She wore a mask 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for 40 years. No big deal.
It took longer, but in the late 1700's they finally got small box contained.

I didn't ask how long the mask mandate would last. I was asking how long the mask mandates lasted during the Spanish flu outbreak.

And, I asked if they quarantined well people during the smallpox outbreak in the 1780s, since your post claimed that quarantines were used back then to help with the outbreak.

Read the article, it spells it out. (Free pass, 18 months for masks)

You should become educated about the history of the Spanish flu before claiming that it was "contained". There were a few local quarantines here and there, but throughout most of the world including the United States, people kept going to work and school and church as usual. It ended when herd immunity developed.

Smallpox was still a significantly circulating disease in the United States throughout most of the 1800's. Abraham Lincoln even had it while he was President. Vaccination, which began in the late 1700's, gradually led to its end, not mask use.

I'm okay with wearing a mask to try to help prevent Covid, but keeping one's facts straight is important.
