Does anyone have experience crossing the land border with a positive test? I know it is theoretically possible as long as you have all the documentation, but I am hoping someone can tell me how it actually played out at the border so I can be ready in case (the youngest kid -who is vaccinated- just spiked a fever). Thanks!!

I think this thread is the closest I’ve seen to what you’re asking.

I'm wondering the same now too. After reading the governments rules/lingo, it says we have to produce a 'negative' test.
I was under the impression as long as we were Canadian (and fully vaccinated) we could not be denied entry. I can't seem to
find confirmation of that anywhere on the same government website. The pp link to the family that couldn't fly home but rented a car
and drove home is the closest I've found to being allowed back in with a positive test result. As long as we have all our info on
ArriveCan with a quarantine plan, we should be ok, right?

Yes. You’re definitely allowed to cross with a positive result. You’ll be quarantined, but as long as everything has been entered into ArriveCan you should have no problem actually reentering the country.

If you are a Canadian citizen you can not be denied entry.

Thanks for confirming. I thought as much but when I couldn't find it stated anywhere I immediately started to panic! lol

Thanks for confirming!! Hopefully the tests are all negative tomorrow but who even knows at this point. Either way we should cross back tomorrow night

🤞🏻 Wishing you a safe journey home.

use this form on the Canada website, and even if you answer that yes you have symptoms you'll see this pop up stating yes you can enter the country

Can I cross the border ?

Thanks!

Just crossed back yesterday, coming back from Nashville. Both times using Windsor/Detroit.

Going there, at the Detroit side of the tunnel, the border guard (unmasked) barely glanced at our passports, asked no questions, and waved us through. Coming back over the Bridge into Windsor the guard was very thorough - but it seemed she was very carefully following a script, as it looked like she was either training someone or being trained.

Luckily we were all negative, or I'm sure she would have wanted our quarantine plan in detail. But as others have said, even if positive, it's not like they can turn you around.

LOL…generally the Americans don’t care if we come into their country. I live near the border and BC used to cross often for day trips. Rarely would I get someone who asked more than the purpose of the trip. Coming home, that’s a whole other animal. They want to know where you went, what you did, what you ate and what colour is your underwear.

Not true of the Detroit crossings in general. It’s a crapshoot. Sometimes smooth sailing other times not so much. I had one US agent read me the riot for not printing out all of the hotel confirmations etc for our 2 day drive to Florida - it was available on my phone. Next trip I offered it up and and got waved down. Windsor-Detroit is the busiest border crossing and in general the Canadian side has been smoother for us (using Nexus).

Once we had relatives from Europe with us. Married couple but he’s French and she’s Belgian and of course different last names because many women keep their maiden names. We were taking them to a college football game. Almost 3 hrs of fingerprinting and eye scans and me translating 🙄🙄🙄. They’d actually flown into the US from Brussels and crossed into Canada via land before coming to visit us. On the way back 2 mins through Canada customs 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve crossed there many, many times but mainly Lewiston. Occasionally at Rainbow. I’ve also had all those same experiences and many more. Had a few that were actually a little scary. Like the time we crossed at Erie around 3am on our way to WDW and the guy came right out of the booth without saying a word and opened our back door. He poked my kids to wake them and asked them all sorts of questions that they couldn’t answer. He then left the door open and went back in his booth. Then proceeded to question us about how much cash we were carrying and what denominations. Then he asked where we were going and what route we were taking. I honestly thought we were going to be hijacked in some remote spot along the highway.
I will say for sure all the weird questions have come when entering the US. Coming home they are pretty consistent but I’ve also crossed back and been asked for my passport and literally nothing more.

Someone just told me today that their friend drove across with a positive result and was fined $8,500. I’m shocked as it’s the first I’ve heard of it and it’s always been my plan b to drive home while traveling should one of us test positive.

The only way to get fined crossing is if your info hasn’t been put into ArriveCan and your quarantine plan is not acceptable.

Interesting. They didn’t mention that part when they told me, but it’s the first I’ve heard of it happening so makes sense.

I don't think you can even be fined for not putting your info into arrivecan. Apparently now, you can just give that info at the border since not all people have a computer that they can access, or a phone, or the capability to fill out that app.

I would imagine that either they hid something, forged something, got the wrong test, etc.

That was a thing though, right? Or was it automatic quarantine if you didn’t input your info into ArriveCan?

It’s just so frustrating and adds to the uncertainty that it really depends on the luck of which CBSA officer you get on a particular day.

Also, is it explicitly stated on the government website that you can enter with a positive test and won’t be fined (other than one that is ten days old)? Or is this just “common knowledge”?
