I have heard from quite a few people that their credit card provides sufficient coverage for rental car insurance and liability, so I am wondering if I can hear from these people which credit card company they use. I am thinking of applying for a credit card with sufficient coverage just to use for rental car insurance but don't have time to search with card has the best.

I've just been looking into this for myself. Our bmo mosaik credit card has an additional travel protection that you can purchase with a yearly fee. It covers medical insurance, travel cancellation and car rental insurance worldwide. We need it for our trip to Ireland this summer. Our car insurance that we have right now covers car rentals within North America only.

I'm with State Farm and my car insurance will put the same coverage I have at home (million PL/PD, very low deductibles etc) on rental cars in North America.

This option was a whopping 25$ a year.

Remember - Credit card 'car insurance' covers the rental car itself. It does NOT cover third party liability generally speaking.

This protection does not extend to third-party liability (property damage, injury or death to others resulting from an accident) or the loss of personal effects.

I would never rely on coverage through a credit card there are far too many loopholes. We bank through First Calgary and have a cc (fyi platinum first calgary mastercard) with them. We also added on additional renters insurance through TD and get 50,000 dollars of complete rental vehicle coverage for 50 bucks a year:goodvibes

RBC Platinum Avion. Saved my bacon with a rental car in Louisiana when a rock cracked the windshield. The $120 yearly fee is worth not having to pay Alamo's ridiculous $59.95/day for taking it out of rotation, $25 administrative fee for processing damages + $999 for a new windshield.

What a joke...a windsheild only costs around $75 - $100 (my DH sells auto parts)

Ask him for a quote on a windshield for a 2007 Toyota FJ.

It's quite a bit pricier than that.. Otherwise, we'll be over to get one ! ;)

Sorry...I'm talking wholesale. The mark up is quite a bit more than the standard 100%.......that's how I get to WDW every year:rolleyes1

Oh I know that! I normally purchase my own auto parts and bring them to a dealer for MY personal vehicle... But Alamo is a whole other beast!

So no deals for CanadianGuy ? (giggle .. kidding of course)

I can get you the windsheild for 3 easy payments of $19.99 plus shipping and handling.

S&H to NB....via Air Canada......$939.03

BTW....sorry to the OP for the hijack.:)

Td's line of gold visa cards all offer very good auto rental coverage. The Gold Select the Gold Elite and the Gold Travel. I am pretty sure most of the gold and platinum cards from most CDN banks offer something similar also.

I'm going to post this in here as well... It's just a reminder that all these coverages (creditcard etc) only cover the vehicle. They do NOT cover liability for any other vehicle you hit... or any personal injury to other parties arising from that.

The rental car coverage in Florida only comes with $10,000 in liability coverage. Obviously that's too low...

I feel it's important to highlight the 3-rd party liability situation. Many people mistakenly believe that credit card rental insurance covers them totally.. I used to think this as well. It does not.

Once again - this coverage covers the damage to the rental car.. and there is some basic coverage for liability included with the rental .. but its not very high.

The coverage you're talking about does not cover 3rd party liability generally speaking... (the damage to other people's property or person) That could be extensive and it's NOT covered by most credit card protections or by policies like those from PC Financial Travel Insurance.

In some states, the minimum amount of property damage coverage required by law (and therefore what is included with your rental car) is very low.. as low as $10,000. In fact, that IS the minimum in the state of Florida and that IS what car rental companies in Florida include with their rentals. That is woefully inadequate.

Further, Body Injury Liability is totally optional in the state of Florida and in almost all cases IS NOT be included with your rental. Check with your rental car company for details.

NO credit card program that I am aware of offers 'Body Injury Liability' coverage for third parties injured by your driving. Nor does it offer Property Damage Liability for other parties.
[EDIT: Even the American Express Platinum Card only extends coverage to the rental vehicle itself -- nothing else.]

Obviously, even an accident where nobody is seriously injured could easily exceed that coverage. If you are deemed at fault and the other party has to go to the hospital even overnight, you're looking at being on the hook for as much as $15,000 in emergency care costs and probably some loss of income, pain and suffering and god knows what else. NONE of which would be covered by PC Financial's insurance or a credit card's coverage.

You should talk to your insurance agent about what happens if you get in an accident and someone sues you for a half a million dollars. They can provide the best answers...

I have full coverage.. with million dollar liability AND the full rental car coverage from State Farm. My deductible is 250$. At 25$ a day for the loss-damage waiver at the rental car counter, I'm better off financially to gamble that if I'm in an accident it will exceed 250$ in damage and just use my insurance. Have you been to a body-shop recently? You can't break a tail-light for 250$ these days.

If I REALLY wanted to protect my own coverage from an accident claim, I would use get the Collision Damage Waiver (roughly 25$ a day) from the rental company / or use the Credit Card coverage for the CDW.. and the Extra Liability Protection (between 12 and 15$ a day) from the rental company. Obviously that would easily double the cost of the rental or more... That's not worth it in my opinion.

The rental car coverage option from State Farm was 25$ for a full year... not per trip... it's more coverage and it's less money. In my case, it covers the car AND all third party liability to property OR personal injury.

If you currently do not have ANY liability insurance, to protect your assets & future income from a claim by a third party, you should absolutely purchase the Extended Protection from the rental car company and either consider the Collision damage waiver or find a credit card that will cover the rental vehicle itself.
