credit card limit onboard

What is the limit on your onboard account before Disney Cruise Line attempts to take a payment from your registered card. I seem to think it was $500, is it still this or am I wrong (as usual). The problem is that here in the U.K. an online purchase, which DCL making a charge would be classed as, means that the issuing bank sends you a onetime authorisation text to your phone which you then have to send to prove it is you.
As we are doing the EBTA we could be in the middle of the Atlantic and the card payment would be declined. I know I can prepay some money to my onboard account or take cash and get guest services to put it on but I am hoping there is no upper limit now. Once we get to europe I will be able to receive and send texts so no problem then.

Thanks in advance
Michael

I don't think DCL is classified as an online purchase. That would be weird since it isn't online at all. In any regard, I can't imagine this is the first time they've dealt with such a thing. Maybe other international cruisers can chime in here, but it would seem weird that they would bill that way. Could you perhaps call your credit card company in advance and let them know? That's what I've done when traveling abroad so none of my charges are flagged.

One solution might be to have guest services charge your card when you first board the ship. That way you should be able to receive the text to authorize it while still in port.

If DCL ask for a payment from my bank that I haven't been able to enter my pin number for they will send a text to me and I have to send the code they have sent me. This is their security system to prevent fraud. This is a fairly recent system that the banks and credit card companies have implemented and DCL may not have had experience of. I did email them a few days ago but as yet no response.
I have been in touch with the card issuers and they have said that is the way the system is set and they can't do individual requests.
If I make a purchase by phone I can just give my number from the back of the card.
I will have to preload my onboard account, which I don't like as the exchange rate they use is expensive.

I'm pretty sure our card has been charged somewhere around $500-$600 in the past. Not a "limit" per-se, but a charge goes through then they start to accrue more. I don't think we've ever gotten off even a 4-night cruise without at least 1 charge during the voyage plus 1 to close out the account at the end.

After reviewing the guest folios for our three transatlantics and two panama canal cruises, all pre-Covid from 2016 through 2019, I find DCL to be quite inconsistent in processing credit card charges. Trigger amounts for “mid-cruise” credit card postings have varied from $500 to $1000 with at least one $750 posting (actual amounts were usually a few dollars over these amounts, like $1009.50 as an example, so presumably triggered when the folio hit $1000). I would expect charges to post when the actual balance due hits one of those amounts, but did not see any consistent way to anticipate that happening.

If you are using the same card on the ship that you would if you pre-loaded your account for known / anticipated charges, won’t the exchange rate be the same (expensive)?

Awesome idea! So if I was to surprise our family and buy some advance Onboard Credit will everyone in our family be able to enjoy it? It says that it will be loaded to my KTTW card, but everyone in the room will have charging priviledges to the credit card on file for our party. If my wife uses her KTTW card to buy something will the credit be applied to her purchase also? I would assume yes, but I just wanted to check for sure. Thanks!

Yes, it’ll apply to purchases, alcoholic beverages, spa treatments, excursions etc.
