Is there any credit card for those with bad credit? I now have bad credit thanks to a lawyer who gave me some really bad advice (too long to get into here).
My credit has always been over 850 but I listened to bad advice and had to claim bancruptcy a few months ago.
By the way, I tried to sue the lawyer but he has been disbarred for giving the same advice to others so I was told I can't go after him. If he was in a group I could sue the office but he was on his own.
I am traveling in July and all the rental car agencies need to see a credit card, they won't take debit.
I was thinking of getting a prepaid credit card but not sure how they work.

We rented a car with a debit card. They just put a hold on all of the money up front. We have never had any problems. But our car insurance covers any damage done to a rental car so maybe that's why.

Maybe try Capital One. I was able to get a card when my credit was in the low 600s. It was only a $500 limit though, but it may serve your purpose. I would just try to stay away from any card that charges an annual fee.

I would look into getting a secured credit card if you can't get a regular one.

You basically get a $500 limit in exchange for placing a $500 deposit with the bank, etc. It represents little risk for the bank, so you should be able to get one even with a very low credit rating. Every month you pay on time, they should also report to the credit reporting agencies and it will help build back your credit rating - but be sure to ask the bank if they do report on secured cards, some may not. You obviously want one that does.

Many credit unions and bigger banks do secured cards. But be sure to shop around for the one with the lowest fees that will meet your needs - often times credit unions offer the best deals in this situation.

We could not use a debit card with Enterprise this past April. Or cash. Had to be credit card with price of the rental plus a deposit.

A long time ago something bad happened to me and my credit took a hit.
So I got a Providian Visa. I had to give them $250 and my credit limit was $500.

After using the card for a year and paying it off each month, Providian then offered me a non secured card with a credit limit of $1500. I took them up on this offer and closed the secured card account and got the $250 back.

My sister doesn't have a credit card, only a debit card. She came to visit my mom and needed to rent a car. Since she was from out of state they wanted a credit card. So I added her to my card and she then paid me.

Now when she rents a car in the state where she lives, then the car rental agency will allow her to use her debit card.

thank you for all your quick replies and thank you Dolf for the idea about Capital One.
I applied and was approved for one with alot more credit than I expected. I plan on buying something small like about $25 once a month and paying it off right away to help build up my credit again.
One thing I learned through this is trust only myself for financial advice, I made it through 57 years without problems but he really messed up all my years of good credit with one stupid peice of advice.

I think you mean 750. 850 is the highest and it is considered the holy grail of FICA. If you act quickly, this may work... apply for a store only card. If you are approved ,50/50 (even with a bankruptcy), you will get some credit card offers from the really high interest cards like Orchard. They are crappy cards but if you pay off your balance and utilize them to build your credit , you will qualify for a better card. Good luck! I feel your pain. I was being represented by an attorney who had his license suspended but continued to represent me without mentioning that little detail. It seemed like things were going a bit slow and other things did not add up so I called the Bar Association and was informed of his suspension as well as pending disbarment. Luckily, my new attorney was able to correct the situation b4 I was on the hook for a very sizable amount of money. Also, I would try Orchid, even if you cannot get the store credit card. These cards prey on people who cannot manage money and can only pay the minimum balance but they are a legitimate card and I think it would work for you.

Your bank should be able to give you a prepaid visa card that will be reported to the credit reporting agencies but ask for that specifically. PS. Last I knew 850 is the highest credit score possible and there was only one person in the world close at 849. Heard that on Clark Howard on HLN.

Capital One and Orchard Bank. You can google the credit boards they have a list if ones that people have been approved for as they are trying to rebuild their credit

1) I am surprised you have not been inundated by credit card offers.
2) They know you can't claim again for 7-years.
3) Cards are usually not too hard to get.
4) High interest rates, but at least you get a card.
5) I would apply to 3-4 and see what happens.

6) Tough to get and no need to apply
. . . AMEX
. . . Bank of America
7) Easier to get (Google for the websites)
. . . Capital One
. . . Credit One Bank

NOTE: I recommend using a debit card over a secured credit card.
Thee are too many negatives and pitfalls with secured cards. I
also do not recommend pre-paid cards, as there are hidden charges.

Not if the score was based on the VantageScore System and not FICA. With VantageScore the highest you can get is 990.

I too am in bankruptcy.....I only have one year and 3 months to go and I'll be done. However I was under the impression that applying for a credit card while in bankruptcy is a no no!!! That's why we haven't applied for any cards because we didn't want to break any bankruptcy laws and risk having our case thrown out.

We're a credit card free family and have always used our debit card when renting cars out of state. Alamo is our preferred rental company lower rates and they usually put a $250 hold on the debit. You should look into them wherever your traveling to?

I always use my debit card with Alamo. If you have proof of a round trip ticket (plane, train, cruise) they never put a deposit on my card. Just the cost of the rental.

Be careful applying for cards. Each time you apply for credit, it goes against your report. Rental car companies have started checking credit. We use debit cards only and I was declined from renting from budget because of a low credit score, even though we had enough cash in the bank to cover the hold. We use Thrifty for our cars with no problem.

We have used Enterprise every time we travel and have debit cards only with round trip flight itineraries. At LAX they put a hold on our card which was released after the return and in Orlando they didn't even run the card until we returned the car so no hold. Now I had contacted rental locations out of terminal and they said Enterprise doesn't run credit at all and with round trip tickets we are good to go.

Enterprise has served us well every time AND we get good rates.
