I originally posted this on the community board but received the suggestion to post it here as well. I appreciate any advice or insight anyone can give :flower3:

Is anyone here a consultant? I have a few questions if anyone can answer

what are the start up costs?

what are the minimum sales per period?

commission?

how involved is it? is it a pushy kind of thing or more of a go at your own pace even if that pace is slow kind of thing? I'm looking for something I can do super casually, more to sell to my friends and myself rather than to go crazy trying to book lots of parties.

Anything else that would be helpful to know?

Thanks so much!

Welcome to the Creative Community!!!

We have several CMC's here. Hopefully someone will answer your questions soon, but most work during the day so you'll probably hear something later tonight.

I can answer a few of your questions. I am a consultant that only sells to myself and my daughter. I would buy the products anyway and I enjoy the discount (approx 30%). You need to buy $500 (retail) worth of product every 3 months to stay "active". Not sure about the current start up cost. I can check if you want.

Becky, I am a consultant (in CT too!).

I"ll answer what I can, if you have further questions, pm me and I'll send you my website, if you wish to look around there. :goodvibes

what are the start up costs?

Here’s how it works: New Consultants purchase the basic Consultant Kit for $50, plus shipping and handling. The kit contains enough business materials to hold a Photo Solutions Party.

Consultant Kit contents include: Scraps magazine, 8x8 Hardcover StoryBook sample, StoryBook Creator 3.0/Memory Manager 3.0 Demo DVD
with Content, Getting Started Brochure, 4 Photo Solutions Catalogs (5/pk), 2 Creative Memories Product Catalogs, 2 Photo Solutions Party
Postcards (30/pk), 2 Photo Mouse Pads (booking gifts), 1 Customer Order Forms (25/pk), Consultant Presentation Guide, Photo Tips video,
Business Fliers, Personal Website - 90 days free, Creative Memories Lapel Pin

New Consultants can add samples products to use at their parties by purchasing the Basic or Enhanced Completion Kits at a 30 percent discount. The purchase of the Completion Kits will count toward your monthly personal volume

what are the minimum sales per period? You are asked to meet a $500 retail/$350 wholesale during a three month period. If you meet the minimum in a one or two month time, your timeclock resets. S0 if you meet the $350 wholesale in Jan and Feb, then your next three month starts in March. You could then do a cumulative sales of $100 in March, $100 in April, then $125 in May. I will be perfectly honest with you, not once in six years as a consultant have I ever had trouble meeting the minimum.

commission? 30%

There are purist out there who work their business full time, and there are others who do it more casually. I do it part time as I have a full time job and a special needs child. I love the quality of the products, that is why I became a consultant. I do a crop once of month, and about two weekend crops a year. One is at the Hartford Expo Center, next is scheduled for April 2012, and a weekend crop on Cape Cod, next is scheduled for March 2012.

With the customer base of your friends and yourself, you most likely will have no issues meeting the minimums. I have a consultant who is more of a hobbyist; she buys for herself, her Mom and her aunt. She doesn't do any Photo Solution parties or crops. The nice thing is your can work your business in whatever manner you choose.

Anything else that would be helpful to know? If there are any other questions you have, please feel free to pm me.

Thank you very much! I'm glad to hear that someone else does this and I'm not totally off base. I'm really busy as a SAHM and my husband works full time and is finishing his degree (also full time) so I don't really think I can commit to doing lots of parties, but I would love to sell to myself and my friends and host the occasional party for friends. I'm glad to hear that something like that might be feasible. Has anyone given you a hard time about doing that or pushed you to do lots of parties or do they basically leave you be as long as you meet your $500/3 months quota?

No, I don't get pressure to do more. I realize there is the opportunity to do so but it isn't for me and wouldn't work into my schedule and lifestyle.

That's great to hear! I'm a SAHM, my husband works full time and is back in school full time so my free time is somewhat limited but I think that doing this would force me to keep up with my scrapbooking more, which would be a very good thing. Sort of forcing me to take time for myself, which I'm sure many of you can relate to.

I just sell to myself (most of my sales!) and invite a couple of friends over twice a month - we scrap together and they purchase their scrapbooks, papers and tools from me (but they do sometimes buy small things in craft stores - luckily for me we don't really have anything much locally;)). I manage to keep active - its surprising how much adhesives, pages and protectors add up to!

No one has ever said a thing to me. In fact I think people who don't really "work" the business, but, sell to themselves and a few friends are actually called hobbiest consultants or something like that. There are lots of us around ;)

My upline lives too far for me to go to her training, but she always lets me know about events etc. and makes sure I know if I need to order extra to stay active. But she doesn't pester me as I've told her I have a "day job" and I'm just doing it for me:goodvibes

Thanks everyone! I think this is going to be fun, and hopefully the kick in the butt to stay motivated that I need! I'm not always good about making enough time for my hobbies, it's easy to always put everyone else first. This is going to be good!

I've been a consultant for 6 1/2 years. I have a full-time job too...I have not been pushed, but supported by my team leader and her peers, in wherever I want to take my business. I do this casually, mostly for myself, but do have a dedicated customer base of friends who order through my website or directly from me. My group does two weekend crops a year and then I do stuff on my own - invite friends over to crop, etc. I am digitally endorsed so I generally meet with people one-on-one to demo the software (its on my laptop, so portable) and help them get started with their digital scrapbooking.

I will say that CM is wonderful to its consultants - fun rewards and extras!

I'm in MN, CM reps are plentiful as it is a MN based company!
