We are thinking of creating a social story for DS 3 prior to us going down. We think he may be on the Austism spectrum somewhere. How do I go about this??

you can do a simple one with pictures that you download (or maybe people send to you electronically.) PM me if there is any in particular and I can send them to you when we get back. Simple language, just to let him know what to expect.

We were more into prepping our kids for the airplane ride. STILL nervous about that! We did some airplane games (lined up chairs like an airplane, then took off, leaning the chairs back, threw in a little turbulance for fun!) Then last Friday, my sons therapists, their sister and I went to our airport, which is only 10 minutes from our house. BWI has an observatory for kids, so we did it like a scavenger hunt. Each had a list of things to find (moving sidewalk, elevator, suitcase, ticket agent, telephone, screens for departures/arrivals, etc. etc.) The kids LOVED it. I am glad we did it close to the trip, because my one guy went running to the car the other day with his suitcase!

Good luck!

You can use PECS and take your own pictures or use general pictures. You just put the order in which you will do things to get ready and go to Disney.

1) Packing luggage
2) Driving to airport
3) Security Check
4) Getting on Airplane
5) Rules for airplane
6) Getting off
7) Driving or bus to hotel
8) Unpacking
9) Going to Disney

Just make it fun and that way there are no surprises and your DS knows what to expect. You can use velcro and then put them on the strip and take a picture off as you finish that task. Don't forget the positive reinforcers!

Let me know if I can help you. I own the expensive picture this software and will email you pictures if you need them.

PM me if you need more help! Good luck and have fun!

This is a great way to make a social story for your DS. :sunny:

Tacomaranch - it's so nice of you to offer to email pictures to the OP. That's awesome! You are waaaaaaaay cool! :cool1:

BTW - Bugsmom73, if you don't know what PECs are, you can go to www.difflearn.com to learn about them and other teaching/learning tools that may help your DS.

I made a social story/visual schedule for my DD-4 when we went. I broke it down for her her - even said when we were leaving to go back to hotel and sleep. I downloaded a picture of the hotel room from resort and then used a picture of her sleeping.

I mainly did this because she knew we were "Goint to DW", but we actually left home the night before to stay in the city - stayed in a hotel - then flew on the airplane - then we got to the resort - then stayed the night - it was nearly 48 hours between leaving the house and BEING at MK...having the social story avoided meltdowns and nagging, "When are we going to DW?!" (to her - that's MK).

I also downloaded pics of all the restaurants we had ressies for and let her know when we would see certain characters. She read this social story for over 2 weeks before we left. So she KNEW that we WOULD see her favorite characters - etc.

The only problem is - if you make it too detailed - you have to stick to it - otherwise THAT will cause a meltdown,.

I laminated the pages and made a book with binder rings.

I think I still have the pp. saved on my computer - I used Print Shop...would you believe I threw away the book?????

I have access to the Boardmaker (mayer-johnson) pictures as well if anyone ever needs anything.
You can use Google Images to find pictures too.

You might want to check out sandbox-learning.com They have downloads of social stories and even have on about going places, you can add your own specific stuff to it

I'm getting ready to start a social story about our up-coming cruise and WDW trip. I'll have to check out that website. Thanks. :thumbsup2
