We are cruising out of Miami for the first time (never been there before) but we are flying into Fort Lauderdale. We are arriving four days before the cruise so we can spend some time in Miami. We don't arrive until almost midnight. I've checked into transportation and many of the car services don't pick up that late at night. I have no problem getting a taxi but I'm wondering if there will be taxis available at the airport that will go to Miami that late at night? We are from a very rural area and I'm a little nervous about getting a taxi late at night to a city that I am totally unfamiliar with. It may seem crazy but I just want to make sure that I won't have a problem.

I don't know about taxis, but you could always use Lyft. Or you could spend the first night in Ft Lauderdale and then go to Miami since you're not getting in until late.

I also don't know about the taxi situation, but I would also choose to stay at a hotel near FLL airport (many have a shuttle) and then get the car and get down to Miami the next morning. I don't think I'd enjoy a 45 min drive in an unfamiliar town late at night after traveling.

That said, if you have time to visit the Shark Valley part of Everglades National Park, that was a highlight of our recent visit to Miami before we cruised on the Magic last month. Great alligator viewing!

We don't have lyft or uber in our area so I've never used either of them. Are they safer than a cab?

Uber/Lyft are extremely safe. Cabs may seem sketchy but are also a pretty safe way to travel. If it were me I would get an Uber. It will be a shorter trip at midnight and that way you don’t have to deal with moving hotels.

How many are in your travel party? If it’s more than 2 you might want to get an uberxl (think suv) so you have room for the luggage.

Just my husband and I with 2 large suitcases and 2 carry ons. Maybe an UberXL would be better. Thanks!

Lyft requires background checks for its drivers and also doesn't harbour a culture sexism. Uber also did not let drivers get tipped within the app, recently they allowed tipping but have capped the amount a driver is allowed to be tipped.

We used Lyft in Altanta last summer and our driver said she used to drive for Uber before going to Lyft and the background checks for Lyft were much more extensive then Uber. That was enough to make me stick with Lyft.

I used to live in Fort Lauderdale. You’ll have no problem getting a taxi/Uber/Lyft to Miami.

Most drivers for one drive for both, fwiw...

We were in that same situation a little over a year ago- our flight got into FLL around midnight and we wanted to go to Miami. We had no trouble getting a cab. I think it cost about $100 for the 2 of us.
