Well as much as I love my DW I come home tonight and she has decided that based on the fact that the Magic is going to be showing "Villians tonight" as a new show. Based on this she wants to move our 5 Day Aug 2011 cruise to an Oct 7day cruise. It's cheaper in Oct but our kids would have to miss a week of school. What should we do? And if anyone could answer her post about our deposits and what we would owe to switch I would appreciate it she is getting twitchy waiting for a response.

Missing school seems to be a sticky issue on these boards so don't be surprised if some of the responses are less than :flower3:. While it is cheaper, I'm not certain that the hassle of the kids missing school and making up missed work is worth the savings. It really depends on your school system's policy about absences. For us, missing three school days was more of a hassle than I expected. Although the teachers were just fine with it, one of my daughters felt too much pressure to get it all of her work done before we left.

Perhaps you should just take the new show announcement as a sign that you need to book another cruise while onboard!

I'm not sure I would make a switch if the only reason was for a show. I'm anxious to see the new one, but probably not that much.

I have taken our DD (9) out of school in October for vacation before. Our school has a pretty liberal policy about this and the teachers have always been wonderful about giving us the work to do on vacation. My DD can be a pain about doing the work on vacation, but usually when I warn her that I will never do this again if she gives me a hard time, she does what she is supposed to do. She has straight A's and reads really quickly, so that has always been a factor in our decision to vacation or not. If she wasn't doing so well, we would not take her out at all. I did try to plan this upcoming one to coincide with Election Day (which she would have off), so she is only missing 4 days. If my husband could get off during the summer months or during the major school holidays, we wouldn't take her out at all, but he is a police officer and does not have the seniority to get those prime weeks. So, it's during the school year or nothing for us.

I don't think I will be taking her out for very much longer though. I think once grade school is over, so will our during the school year vacations.

If this is gonna be your only cruise for quite awhile... take the kids out of school. 5 days of school, compared to family memories that will last a lifetime? No contest! Me and my wife are sort of "anti-establishment" types to begin with, but in my opinion there is a value in teaching your kids that sometimes it's OK to blow off work or school. Whose values/priorities are more important -- some institution's, or your family's? Your kids may one day be parents themselves, how do you want them to raise your grandkids?

If you cruise "a lot", well then, I'd let your kids decide if they think it's worth the hassle of all the potential make-up work and stuff. The other side of the "sometimes it's ok to blow off work/school" coin, is that there are repurcussions and consequences for every decision you make.

We cruise once or twice per year, on the shorter 3-day cruises... we don't even think twice about yanking our son out of school. Of course, his current teacher is a Disney freak too -- so she completely is on our side! ;)

If your Aug. 2011 cruise is on the new Dream you will see Villains Tonight on that sailing as well. It is being developed for both the Magic and Dream. The Wonder will be in CA by Aug. 2011 with the Dream taking over its route so you should be all set.

Of course I'd always go for the longer cruise so I'd switch to the 7-day, but if the change is only to see the new show it is unnecessary.

Changing dates for a cruise is easy provided that the penalty period has not begun. All you need to do is call DCL (if booked directly) or your TA (if used). You will need to pay the difference between the deposit you have already paid and the deposit for the longer cruise at the time you make the switch; the balance will be due 75 days before the new cruise sailing date.

IF you booked thru DVC, you will be assessed another $95 reservation fee, and you'll need to be ready with the difference in points. If it's a DVC ressie, don't change....do both cruises!

Others have addressed the kid/school issue. You'll get a huge variety of opinions on that issue.

i wouldnt just change a cruise for 1 show. the show will probaly be on dcl for 7 years or longer. plently of time to see it.
