I've called 3 dentists, and not only can I not have anything done tomorrow because it's Sunday, they are all closed Mon. AND Tues. for the holiday!!

It's a tooth that I had a root canal on last year, but the dentist never put the crown on it because it wound up cracking again, so he said it needed to come out.

Well..I put off going back because I didn't want to go through having it pulled out.

Just a few minutes ago I was eating a cookie, and it just broke right in half!

It doesn't really hurt exactly, but it's uncomfortable, and SHARP!

To top it all off, we're leaving for WDW on Wed.! :sad2:

Any suggestions on what to do?

OMG!!! Wow. I just don't know what to say. What made my jaw drop was when you said you were leaving for WDW Wednesday!!!! :scared1:

no advice, but been there done that(but not on the way to wdw)! i guess just be gentle with it and gather all the pain meds you can find to take on your trip! good luck!

I would at least get to urgent care before your trip to get antibiotics and pain meds. I know when I've broken a tooth and had to wait for a dental appt, I almost always get an infection. And you certainly don't want that on vacation.

Hmm.
No ImmediaDent near you? Or someplace similar?
Or were those the places you were calling?
If so, I guess they really are not emergency dentists.
I don't know of anything else to do. :confused3

I am sorry about your tooth. Of course these things always happen on the weekend and a holiday weekend at that. The only suggestion I have might be a very expensive one, but here goes. Most hospitals have a dentist on call. You could go to the ER and tell them you broke the tooth and it has a very sharp edge on it and they might be able to file it down. Good luck!

I brushed it, and rinsed my mouth out, and so far no pain. I'm PRAYING that because I had a root canal on it maybe it won't hurt??

I believe it may already be infected. The tooth itself has not been hurting, but for the past month or so my jaw has been aching, and I've been feeling sick to my stomach.

Good grief..WHY did I not just go to the dentist! :guilty:

I do think I run down to prompt care in the morning to get some antibiotics.

Thanks

It was the urgent care and after hours dentists that I called!

What a joke they turned out to be! :sad2:

I often ask myself this question, especially having children:

Why do these things ALWAYS happen on a holiday weekend??? :confused3

Doesn't your dentist have an emergency # to call?

There are several Dentists in the office I use. There is always a dentist on call for emergencies. It costs a little more, but at least you could get it taken care of now. Try calling your Dentist Office phone #, and see if there is a recording.

The problem is I am NOT going back to this dentist! I really feel like half of this is his fault for not putting a temporary crown on it.

He just finished my root canal, and wanted to give it a few days to "rest" before he put the temp on it. That's when I broke it while eating.

Well..after he tried to bond it back together he told me it was just going to have to come out.

AFTER I already had $3,000 in it...out of pocket since we do not have dental coverage. :sad2:

If you can't get to the dentist before you go, I would try a drugstore. Usually near the toothbrushes etc. they have a dental putty you can put over the sharp part of your tooth until you can have it looked at. Also buy some Listerine, it will help to kill any germs around the broken tooth. Or, try a 50/50 mix of peroxide and water, rinse and spit!! Do not swallow the peroxide. It will kill the germs in your mouth.
Hope this helps. Good Luck! :grouphug:

Oh, poor you! I feel your pain since I have a sharp edge on one of my molars too. Broke the edge off it AT WDW -- at the Wilderness Lodge Roaring Forks, eating one of their delicious apple walnut salads! I guess the walnut did it.

When we got home from WDW I called my dentist and found out that he is on a 4 week vacation! I got an appointment for July 12.

I agree that you should seek some medical care before you leave, at least to get on an antibiotic if you think it is infected. As another poster said, go to Walgreens or some pharmacy like that and get the dental temporary filling material. At least the edge won't be so sharp and the dentist can easily chip that dental temp. filling off. Like me, you'll have to chew everything on the other side of your mouth for awhile.

Holy mother of Pete! I hope you get everything sorted out! There's got to be some alternatives (I haven't read the responses) out there that could work. Is there any way to schedule an appointment in Florida? May be consdiered out of network on your health insurance, but you could find that out ahead of time.

Good luck!
xoxo

go to the drug store and get some of that temp material. that is all a dentist would do anyway. the tooth is not going to get worse because it broke. if it doesnt hurt now, it is probably not going to start just becasue it broke. and just so you know most dentists wait to crown a tooth after it has had rootcanal to be sure that the tooth has settled down. this has nothing to do with bad judgement by the dentist. it is unfortunate, but other than the sharpness, you will be fine until you get it extracted.

Thank you all!

I'm going to the drug store in the morning to look for the temporary filling stuff, and go to Prompt Care to try and get some meds.

It'll be a short trip this time..back on the 10th, so I guess I'll wait and have it pulled then. :sad2:

I did the same thing last year the day before my dentist appt. Coincedence?

Anyway - he didn't do anything at that appt, said he would fix it "later" since I had to have some other work done.

It wasn't hurting and there was no pain. Just kept it clean (like some of the other posts - using listerine or perioxide) until I went back the following week.
