Crafting a Door Mat.. What to use?

I'm wanting to re-create the Animal Kingdom Lodge Door Mat similar to the pin that Disney released. I figure I could easily re-draw the design with a vector graphics program and then size it correctly for the door mat I will use and print out the patterns for painting. Since I'm new to this type of crafting, what is the best paint and "sealant" to use on a door mat so it doesn't fade or rub off too quickly? Or is it better to "dye" the carpetted door mat and if so, how do I stay in the lines so it doesn't bleed out or is this even a possibility? Thanks for your help and suggestions!
