If you or your spouse have a cpap machine, how loud is it? How long did it take for the other person to adjust to the noise?

Has anyone had a bad experience with a cpap?

Thanks! :)

 My dad had one before he had to go on oxygen 24/7 for his illness. It took my mom 3-4 weeks I think before it became like white noise and she could ignore it. I know if the mask doesn't fit properly or gets dislodged, the noise changes.

My DH has had one for about 7 or 8 years now and I can't sleep without it, LOL!

It didn't take me anytime to get used to it, it was such an improvement over his awful snoring! Seriously though, it made such a big difference for both of us, he was so loud that it was keeping both of us up all night. Once he got the Cpap machine we both started sleeping through the night. His newer machine is very quiet compared to the old one, it is just like a fan set on low, maybe not even that loud. It took more time for him to get used to it than for me, even now some nights he will forget about it and try to sleep on his stomach and will dislodge it and I have to hit him to turn over and put it back on. HTH!

My DH used a CPAP machine for years, and it sounded like a loud fan. Over the years, I got used to it. In fact, at the beginning of this year, his doctor switched him to a BiPAP machine, and it was much quieter. So quiet, that I had to buy a sound machine to be able to sleep, because I had gotten used to the white noise from the CPAP machine.

That's why I'm looking into getting one. My snoring (I have OSA due to a deviated septum that insurance won't pay to have fixed) is constantly disturbing my DH. So, I'm getting the machine for his benefit.

I feel terrible for him, having to put up with that all night. :guilty:

Is this something I'd need to contact my ENT doc about getting a prescription for? Or do I just go ahead and order it myself?

My husband and I both have one, my is several years newer and is much quieter than his. Mine really doesn't make much noise at all, his sounds like a fan on low.
In order to get the CPaps we had to have a sleep study done, which was arranged by our doctors, then since that showed sleep apnea we were able to get CPaps.

My DH has had one since MAY his snoring and apnea was horrible. I made him sleep in another part of the house. DH had to get a script from a Cardiologist/sleep doctor and then had to due a sleep clinic over night on 2 different occassions prior to having the machine given to him.
It is White noise.. however if when DH is sleeping and opens his mouth it sounds like a jet engine is in my bedroom..lol I have to nudge him or say something and he shuts it and then it is just a light hum...
We also have had issues with our DME supplier they really SUCK..and with masks.. we are on the 3rd one now - he just went from a gel nose mask to nasal pillows. out of the blue the bridge of his nose blistered up and he got a bad sore so we changed again.
good luck.

My dad's machine sounds like a white noise maker. This is nice on vacation. Anything is better than that terrible snoring!

DH has had one for many years now. I have a hard time getting to sleep without the little fan-like sound that it makes. :)

I had a sleep study done a couple years ago, so I'm not sure if I would have to have another one.

I'm going to call my ENT today and see what he thinks. :)
