Country craft decorators - ? about berry swags

Hope someone can help me with a silly question! I'm redoing my living room very country - I love crafts! I bought a berry swag to hang over a picture. My mother insists that once it's in place that I'm supposed to take all the "branches" and extend the berries up and down over the picture. Is this right? I thought the berries were all supposed to sort of cascade down around the picture, with none sticking up. Probably just a personal preference question, but wanted to know what everyone does.

I do a lot of display work for a local gift shop. I tend to drape the berries down around the top of the pictures. When I put them (the pip berry swags) over a display case, I tend to spread out the branches more.

It's a personal preference, do what YOU like.
