Counterfit Disney Dollars

I think that's what Rich meant - there are probably many of these bills that just don't get spent.

We have quite a few...its cool to see the different designs. We only save $1's though...gotta spend the bigger ones.

We've made copies for the kids to use as play money but print them a different size so they don't get mixed up with the real thing.

If Disney keeps changing the design of the Disney Dollars, they will have a hard time confiscating counterfeits that already got into circulation.

This may be a bit complex, so don't read if you're a tad sleepy...

If I am a Disney shopkeeper and you buy $100 in Disney Dollars from me and spend only $89DD, you'll have a small amount left over. You could redeem these or walk away with them on purpose or by mistake. Either way...

You, the customer, are left with $11DD. At some point in the future you may look at them and be reminded of Disney. Worse, you may think, "I must redeem those" every now and then, in the process being constantly reminded of Disney. Worse still, you may have displayed the Disney Dollars, thus being reminded even more of Disney.

I, the Disney shopkeeper, have achieved a form of advertising that you have paid for and distributed. Every time you mention the Disney Dollars you "must return" to a friend or show them your picture frame containing the bills, you actually spread it even further - perhaps an unforeseen bonus to me.

Now...

Advertising in general has two purposes:
1. To create public knowledge of a specific product or offer
2. To create public knowledge of your brand name and brand image

Most advertising does both, but some - such as product placement in movies or, to a lesser extent, Disney Dollars, will impact upon mainly the second point.

So...

Disney could be getting more than money's worth from printing these bills. To take a theory even further, if the fake Disney Dollars are small in number, they may even count as a positive. Why? The issue has generated awareness of Disney Dollars, it has put the word "Disney" in our heads and will probably crop up again in the future. Of course, if there are a large number of Disney Dollars in circulation, this up side would obviously be neutered by the obvious fiscal consequences.

Ironically, a friend read this post as I was typing and declared that she'd never heard of Disney Dollars and that they sounded "cool"; she went on to propose that "perhaps we should go to Disneyland Paris as a group of friends" sometime soon?

The power of brand names...

i think its more of an empire.

And if they catch the fools who are making and passing phony Disney Dollars the Empire is likely to Strike Back!

I am sure Disney loves it when people buy the Disney Dollars and never use them. Almost pure profit for the company on those they sell but never redeem.

from marketing persepective, "Disney" is not an "establishment" or an "empire". Disney is a brand.

To rephrase:

Disney, the power of branding.
