Could this be true?

I agree with palmtreegirl. I'm not sure that we have the whole story on this one. I'd hold off on sending the "nasty-grams" to WDW until we got some confirmation of the exact details. The face painting I've seen only offers animals. When our oldest son was about 7 he was painted up like a monkey at AK. We bought him a banana and he had a blast walking around and sounding like a chimp.

Disney may have a blanket policy against painting any sort of logo or symbol. If that's the case, I don't have a problem with WDW's actions. Also, from my memory, each design has a set price and the artists may not be allowed to deviate from the designs and prices displayed at the kiosks.

It is only illegal to use the actual flag for marketing or to assist in commercial endeavors. Using stars and stripes in a similar flag like way is not illegal.

However- A good question to ask the CM is - Can I get a Flag of France, Germany, etc painted on my face? If they are prohibiting all flags then that's ok - they are prohibiting a venue which they have a right to do - limiting it to animals or children's themes. If only the one country's flag is being singled out -it's discrimination.

I agree with this. If there is some kind of policy that limits what kinds of designs can be painted, it's not because they're worried about offending somebody. If this is the case, then I guess they better shut down the Hall of Presidents because that would be very offensive to folks who do not like President Bush.

I think the all flag rule may be the rule. As I recall at AK, you can only get the designs they have on the board. NO others. My friends little girl being the creative type wanted half and half and they said they could not do that.

Just think if the poor face painter had to know every flag in the world.

Personally I have seen the flag on the face and it looks pretty tacky (My aunt had it done at the Austrailian Open and the picture are SCARY, but funny!)

Doesn't Ralph Lanuren Polo Jeans Co have the American Flag as their logo? It is on jeans, t shirts and sweaters.....

That makes perfect sense. Can you imagine all the things that would be requested if they painted anything you wanted? Where would they draw the line?

*If* the story is even true I just don't understand why the parent didn't tell the kid to pick one from the board like everyone else. Oh well.

CarolA,
That is TOTALLY true! As I said before my DD has had her face painted several times, but I forgot about them not letting you change what was offered on the board.
DD had seen a design that she liked at MGM, but wanted to wait and have it done at MK.MK didn't offer that design, and even though it was the same company, and after we expained the style ,she knew what we were talking about, but said we'd have to have it done at MGM.

I have an update to my original post-

The radio show that had the caller (happens to be an employee of the radio station) who complained about Disney not painting an American Flag on their child's face just had a spokesperson from WDW on his show.

She confirmed that they will not paint an American Flag because it would take too much time and be impossible to paint a true representation of the flag on someone's face. She said they can paint stars and stripes painted. Also they offer American Flag tatoos as an alternative.

She said the CM who stated that they could not do the flag painting because it would be a political statement was incorrect. While Disney is not the place to make political statments, they do heavily promote patriotism.

The spokesperson said all CMs are being encouraged to write postcards on specially printed cards to our servicemen protecting our country.
