I've seen a few threads on 2 bed units where it mentions "lock off" Could someone please explain the difference between a lock off 2 bed and a standard 2 bed is and which one is preferable.

Sorry if it is a dumb question

A 2BR lock-off has a connecting door through which the second "bedroom" is, in reality, a studio villa (typically, complete with a sofabed as the second bed rather than an actual queen- or full-sized bed).

A dedicated 2BR has just that -- a "real" second bedroom that has two actual beds in it (as opposed to one real bed and one sofabed), with none of the studio amenities. because of this difference, dedicated 2BRs usually have much more closet space.

HTH.

A lockoff is when the 2 bedroom unit has a door between the 1 bedroom suite with kitchen and the studio part of the 2 bedroom unit. Therefore, you can lock off either side and not use it at all. Some timeshares will let you use, for example, the 1 bedroom side and then deposit the studio side to use at a later date or deposit with RCI or II to use at another resort. I hope this helps, I think this is right and I think that how it works depends on the resort and their policies on lock offs.

Be aware that some of the BCV dedicated 2 bedrooms do not have the 2 beds, some are 1 bed and a sofabed. You have to specifically reserve a 2 bedroom w/2 queens (2nd bedroom).

That probably depends on your situation.

Booking a 2B lockoff is basically the same as booking a 1B and a studio separately. But the 2B costs a few points less per night than booking separately. So, let's assume your immediate family will be staying in the 1B portion of the room and you'd have other relatives or friends of the family staying on the studio side. If you want to share the trip together, and yet maintain some degree of privacy, the lockoff may work better.

The studio side of the lockoff has its own main entrance off of the resort hallway. In a lockoff, you just have one entry which places you in the living area of the 2B.

In a lockoff, you'll have a kitchenette in the studio side (toaster, microwave, sink, coffee maker). The dedicated 2B will have more closet space in this area.

In a lockoff, you are guaranteed to have a balcony for the studio side. In a dedicated, it will vary by resort, but many do not have a balcony.

In a lockoff, the studio side has a separate thermostat. In a dedicated 2B, there is just one thermostat for the entire unit.

And others covered the situation with the beds. If you'll just have one or two people (who would share a bed) staying in the studio room of a 2B, they may prefer the sofa and extra floor space that a lockoff affords, rather than another full bed that will go unused.

It just depends on how you'll be using the room and what best fits your situation.

Does SSR have 2 bedroom lock-off units? Thank you.

Yes, all DVC resorts have 2BR lock-offs and all except BWV have dedicated 2BR villas.
