Dutch fury at US general's gay theory over Srebrenica

Dutch officials have rejected a retired US general's claim that its forces failed at Srebrenica because of poor morale over openly gay soldiers.

A defence ministry spokesman dismissed as "complete nonsense" the remarks by John Sheehan, a former Nato commander.

Gen Sheehan had been speaking at a US Senate hearing on allowing gay people to serve openly in the US military.

He said Dutch leaders had told him that the presence of gay soldiers had contributed to the Bosnian massacre.

Srebrenica was a UN safe haven under the protection of Dutch peace keepers when, in 1995, Bosnian Serb forces overran the town, killing some 8,000 Muslim men and boys.

Gen Sheehan said the former chief of staff of the Dutch army had told him that the presence of openly gay soldiers in the Dutch peacekeeping force were seen as "part of the problem" which contributed to the fall of Srebrenica.

I'm Dutch and so proud we came a long way but being gay is totally accept in MY country.
Gay people have the same rights as everyone else. They can get married,they can adopt children,they can walk hand in hand,they may kiss each other in public,they can wear pink and our military people that are gay can participate in our annual gay parade IN UNIFORM. Our state governors perform in the gay parade even without being gay.
How narrow minded is the US that has as a slogan freedom for ever one ???

I was watching Rachel Maddow last night as she reported on this. It was pretty clear that those that were questioning General Sheehan knew that he was full of it. He is just another old bigotted relic that should keep his retired butt at home instead of in DC trying to make policy.

I can only imagine how ticked off the Dutch were by his comments.

I am and old and grey grandmother and not gay but who cares? Oops I should write lesbian????
But this whole attitude about gay people in the US gets my blood boiling.
Maybe we should make camps to errease " gay" people like Hitler would have done?

This just makes me sick

More than 12,500 gays have been booted from the military since "don't ask, don't tell" went into effect. They include dozens of Arabic speakers, people highly valued by the military since the invasion of Iraq.

Here's what I know: My son serves in the Army and knows gay/ lesbian folks IN the Army. He has NO problem serving with them. This is a kid who was basically homophobic UNTIL he joined the Army. It was THERE that he realized Harvey Milks' theory, "If they KNOW us, they won't vote against us". How true. Once he befriend gay/lesbian people, he realized he had much to learn about the world. He serves WITH gays and has NO problem. I'm proud of him!
