Couch to 5k

I haven't read the entire thread so I apologize in advance if someone has already talked about this:
I started the Couch25K program in January and had a relative smooth first 3 weeks. But At the start of week 4 I "hit the wall" so to speak. My averages had been pretty consistent 16 to 15 minutes per mile. When the prgram required me to run for 5 min, straight my average went way up to 18mm. I decided to redo week 3. I then talked to a friend that's doing the Jeff Galloway run/walk/run program and she recomended it to me.
I just finished my 2nd day with it. I walk 1 minute and run 1 minute. I did the entire 3.1 miles (5K) with an average of 13:37mm. And I'm doing the Royal Family 5K on Saturday and training for the Tower of Terror 10-miler.
I'm not saying that the c25k is not a good program just letting everyone know that there are other alternatives.
Keep up the great work everyone!!

Me too! C25K just progresses too fast for me. I did 1:1 run/walks today, and I not only felt good after my run, but I had my best time yet. I'm still slow as Christmas, but I'll only get faster, right?

With the Galloway program do your run/walk ratios increase? I honestly don't think I could walk fast enough to do that well on a 1:1 ratio. On the weekends I am trying to work on distance using a 2:1 ratio. I try to follow C25K for my other gym workouts, but can't seem to apply those intervals well when I'm running outside. I guess I'm kind of all over the place. I try to remind myself that the important thing is that i am still at it.

I just started today and already signed up for the 10 mile ToT. If I do not have a close goal I never would get started! I am hoping to get motivation and encouragement and maybe a kick in the pants if I slack! My husband and I are doing the ToT together and training for our 5ks before using the C25k.

Hi everyone! Im Jenn
I started C25K back at the beginning of January and I will be starting week 8 this week! The goal right now is to run the Expedition Everest Challenge. Anyone else running it? Im very excited about it but kinda nervous too :scared1:

I am loving this thread.

I started the C25K program at the beginning of Jan but feel off the bandwagon when life got too busy. I am sick today but I am starting again ASAP.
I am totally excited to run my first 5K sometime in 2012 with my eye on a Disney race sometime in the future.

I CAN DO THIS!!

A Disney race is a MUST!!! I just got back from the Princess and it was AMAZING!!! I used to say that I did not have a full in me, but now I am thinking that I just might...if it is at Disney!!!

Well, I've been getting so excited about everyone's success at the Princess that I wore myself out on the C25K last night. My imagination was much faster than my poor legs! I got my best time [which is still super slow] but was almost too sore to walk this morning. Time to pace myself a little better, I guess.

That's actually a great idea - might be an option. How do you keep up with the intevals?

I'll be nervous with you! The EEC is what has gotten me into the C25K program in the first place. And I am convinced that nobody can be as out of shape as I am!

I got a free app Run/Walk Intervals by Ron Bendele...Jeff Galloway also sells an interval timer for $20 on his site.

It's so nice to hear all of this. I was never a runner, I hated the mile in high school and I've always been pretty slow. I started the c25k back in January and kind of ended up doing my own thing with a free timer app I got through itunes. Like a lot of you, I've actually grown to like it! Disney was the only way I was going to run-- I went during marathon weekend and seeing the medals I said to myself, "I want one!" and I think I might actually do the 1/2 marathon in January 2013.
I'd always liked the equestrian sports, but running has proven much more affordable since I run outside on the street in sneakers I got at Target for $20 that are insanely comfortable. It's also been a great way to get out of the weight loss plateau I've been in for the last couple of months. It's great to hear that people have been able to do the 1/2 marathon-makes it that much more realistic a goal!

MightyDuck001 -- I, too, started the program in January, and yesterday I completed a 20-minute run (I wasn't able to run for a couple of weeks in there when my son was sick)!

I can't say I love running, but I can say I love the high it gives me, and I of course love Disney and my goal is to run the 2013 Princess Half. I'm running my first 5K at the end of this month and am super anxious about it. I'm not in it to win it or anything -- I just want to finish strong -- but there are still butterflies.

I just started yesterday. Is it best to do it every other day or can I do it every Wed-Fri-Sun. Also I read somewhere that is best not to strain your legs I was wondering if I can still use the elliptical on days I don’t run.

It is best to do it every other day. On your 'off days' if you wish you can augment your running program with strength training or some other low impact activity.

DD (age 13) just started this week. Today is week 1 day 2 for us. We had hoped to run before school, but it was raining. So we will do it this afternoon.

I am excited to find this thread! I am just getting to read page 3 so I am behind but had to jump in and post a reply!

I just started Monday! Today was W1D2. I'm doing tis with my next door neighbor and her friend. We live right by a high school so we are using their track at night.

We are all built the same so we are suffering together. I'm so glad I have not just one but TWO workout buddies, because it would be so easy to blow it off.

We are determined to finish and run a 5k. If I can get through it, I want to keep training and run the Tower of Terror 10 miler in 2013!!! I have a very long way to go but the important thing is that I got off the couch!

Good job! I kind of fell of the wagon but want to get back on soon. Good job on getting started and completing D1 and 2!!! Keep it up! :)

I woke up this morning and just knew that today was the day to start! So I downloaded the couch 2 5k and headed out. Happy to say that I completed day 1 of week 1 :)

My friend talked me into doing the 5K at AK during Wine and Dine. I just did W2D1 today and even though I did it in a really hilly area (we're out of town so I'm not at my usual running spot) and I managed a 15:20mm. I'm proud of myself for it. I am NOT a runner. This is the first time actually running even for 10 seconds because I actually want to! My only real goal right now is to stay above that 16mm pace and not get carted away.

Today was my W2D1 as well. No Disney events for us unfortunately. We are doing a 5K locally the end of next month and I really want to sign up for an 8K for the Wounded Warrior Project in September. There are also a few half marathons in the fall I may be interested in walking.

So far C25K has been awesome. It is the right pace for me which is good. I am not pushing myself to far then burning out like I have in the past.

Hi! Today I just completed w3/d2. I am breaking the rules with this program and doing it every day. I just run the same w/d twice. I just feel crappy and guilty if I don't. I am also doing an arm workout and ab workout app that I found. I like these programs because the Couch program is only 30 minutes and the arm/ab workouts are only 5 minutes a piece right now. This is the most I have ever completed with this program. I really want to be able to run a mile without stopping! LOL that's my first goal. After that we will talk about a 5k!

That's great! Just make sure you take it easy on the everyday. Give yourself some time to rest so you don't cause an injury. Congratulations on the commitment to get fit! C25K is a great way to start. I started a year ago and can now have done 2 half marathons and am training for my first full. It's all about baby steps. Start with the smaller goals and work up to the big ones. That way you feel like you have really accomplished something and don't get discouraged.
