We are staying at SSR June 1-7. My DH says he wants to do the grocery shopping; the issue is we will not have a car. I know we could go rent one, but I was wondering if anyone has actually used a taxi to go to Publix or Super Walmart, and what their taxi fare was, round trip?

41 more days!

We go to the Winn Dixie, and I don't think we ever spent more than $25 round trip.
Does the taxi driver wait for you? I took a taxi from Goodings (closer than Winn Dixie) to BWV and it cost about $20 with tip.

You can always walk to Goodings (from DTD), and then take a taxi back to your resort too. The problem is Goodings is more expensive than either Publix or Winn Dixie.

Watch our for non metered cabs. I would rent a car.

I used Garden Grocer for our trip in December. It was great, prices were fair and there was no work involved. Very simple procedure, and the groceries are delivered right to your door!

I am done with taxis after getting one from the Dolphin (or Swan?) where I dropped my rental car and needed to get back to OKW. It was $25, should have just kept the car the entire trip to be honest!

I was thinking of taking a cab for groceries, too.
Which is closer, best prices, best selection ?
What would the cab cost ?

We take a Happy towncar from the airport and they will stop for groceries for 1/2 hour on the way. I fax our order ahead of time and they have it in a shopping cart ready for the cashier when you get there. The prices were the same as home and I didn't have to waste precious vacation time grocery shopping. I try my best not to work on vacation.

We were running late for a dinner reservation at Boma, so we took a cab from BWV to AK Lodge. I think the fare was about $15-$20 with tip. It was more expensive than I thought it would be given the relatively short distance.

We are about to take the plunge and buy AKV, and I have been wondering about the grocery issue as well. We would like to avoid renting a car when we visit, but want to take full advantage of the kitchen we'll have with DVC. Our guide told us that we can get our groceries delivered by DVC if we call ahead. Has anyone used this service? Also, he said that the resorts have some groceries available on site - is this sufficient?

There is a Winn Dixie on Apopka Vineland Rd which is right outside of SSR. The taxi fare shouldn't cost too much and it will definently save you $$$ in the long run by shopping there. Have fun!!!

I always rent a car for one day to go grocery shopping. The cost is $25-$30 total. We have the ability to shop where ever we want. It also gives us the freedom to eat a couple meals off property thus saving us money.

So if you rent a car and it cost say $30. You can also go out for lunch and dinner off property. Think about it... It is much cheaper to eat off property so the money you save by eating off property for the one day you have a rental car, will pay for the car.

By the Winn Dixie there is a cii's cii's pizza buffet. The cost is less than $5.00 a person. Its all you can eat pizza, pasta and salad bar.

Where at Disney can you find a deal like that! There are many places to eat by the Winn Dixie which is a short car ride from Downtown Disney.

So if you take a cab your main focus is shopping at a store close to where you are staying to keep the cost of the cab at a minimum but the grocery store close by may not be cheap. I can tell you the Winn Dixie is expensive! So if you have a car you can go to the Super Walmart or Public's which are not that far away.

Now to rent, both Dollar and Avis have rental car counter at 2 different hotels within walking distance of downtown disney. Avis is at the Hilton hotel. I am not sure the name of the hotel where Dollar is. It is the hotel that is a cross from the downtown disney bus stop. If you are waiting for a bus it is the hotel right in front of you. The Hilton a 5-10 minute walk from Disney.

Renting a car is the best way to go.

REMEMBER you must tell them when you check in at the resort that you have a car even if you only have a car for one day. That way you can park at your resort with no problems.

Hey that is what fellow DVC owners are here for. :thumbsup2

We have done this for our past several trips and man it really helps with planning of a trip.
Besides on your first day you spend most of your time flying from your home town to Orlando then getting to Disney and getting settled in. So most of your day is already gone by the time you do all this. So why not rent a car grab a bit to eat off property then grocery shop. Then come back unload the grocery's and start your vacation.
Plan to do it again this fall when we go.

Hi there! We always rent a car as well, but we use Alamo at the WDW car care centre - you get a 20% discount with AP and I think DVC as well, or check mousesavers.com for discount codes if reserving online. They pick you up in a shuttle that you just have to set up a time for pick up 24 hrs in advance (I call the day before we leave) - come right to your resort, and will return you to your resort when you take back the car. Well worth it to rent car as above poster said, and we love the Walmart super centre - we usually get groceries for @ $200 for four of us for two weeks, and that includes beer, wine, pop, water and lots of snacks. They have a great Disney section there too.
Have a great trip - 32 days for us!!!:cool1:

My family stayed at BWV in January and I used Garden Grocer to have groceries delivered to our room. It worked beautifully. You have to allow 24 hours for delivery, but can order online (www.gardengrocer.com) in advance of your trip so you can schedule the delivery for the day you arrive, down to a 2 hour window. The Disney resorts have refrigerated lockers where the groceries can be stored if you don't have your room or are at the parks when the groceries arrive. All you do is call/ask the front desk when you're ready and they'll bring up your order. Of the delivery services available, I found their selection and prices were the best. The delivery charge is $12.00, which is waived for orders of $200 or more. Have fun!

We always use wegoshop.com because she will shop where you tell her to--we always pick Walmart. Her fee seems slightly higher BUT you pay directly from the store receipt as opposed to fixed prices.
Always reliable and a great cost saver.

Love using garden grocer, too. No need for a car -- or a taxi. The shopping is done by them, packaged by them and brought to your resort by them. We used their service in the past and have an order placed for next month.
