Cost of a furnace?

What kind of costs are we looking at?

We have a single family, 2 story home that is approx 2,400sq ft + a basement that is approx 1,200 sq ft in the Chicago area.

Our heat is natural gas.

We also have central air conditioning. I'm not sure if that has to be replaced at the same time or if we can do that at a later time.

Our house is approximately the same size and it ran about $5,000 without any a/c. If you have a unit that supplies both your heat and a/c I think you need to get the same type of unit again (if you want to keep central a/c).

Our house is approximately that size. We have two furnaces, one up and one down and two AC units. To replace one furnace our quote was around $3K. We have gas and the furnaces are HE heat pumps that we hardly ever run. I hate to replace a 7 year old furnace.

I would say for a simple replacement, it could be anywhere from 3-5 grand depending on the unit you want. We just replaced ours last fall (about 2,100 sq ft) and that ran us 4 grand for a good level gas furnace.

I paid less than $4000 last summer for American Standard Furance AND Air Conditioner; both were high efficeny and qualified for the tax credit at the time.

The guy is a bit rough around the edges, but we have no complaints with his work.

DH just replaced the blower motor today. It was only $110 for the part (I found an online coupon good at our local appliance parts store )but I'm sure it would have been a lot more if we had to pay for labor. I have a feeling that we'll be needing a new furnace soon so I'm trying to get an idea. This one is original to the house and the house is about 23-24 years old.

The one we replaced was similarly old. Our electic bill is now half.

If you really want to get a good idea, the only way is to call a few companies and get estimates. There are so many variables that go into this sort of thing that you won't really be able to get any idea at all by asking here.

When we replaced our furnace we got 6 or 7 estimates. All of them were free. Most of them were pretty close to each other, but 1 of them was twice as much as the others and another was almost 3 times as much as the others. I was really glad that I did my homework.

We recently bought my mom a new furnance-90% efficient. It cost $3300 total.
It is close to the same size as your home.

New AC & furnace for my 2,200 sqft house is about $7,000.
It not even a high end model.

I found on this site that a new AC+furnace system is about 7,000 to 8,000 in Chicago
area, so I guess 3,000 -4,000 is a reasonable price for furnace alone.

As other have said, there are just way too many variables to give an accurate example. Pricing not only vary between brands but also efficiency level. For example typical furnace efficiencies are between 80%-97%. Of course the higher the efficiency the more the furnace will cost, but you will see less gas usage. Another thing to watch is the quality of the installation and ask your self "Will this company be there for me if there is a problem?". Also manufacturers warranties can have different coverage and lengths of time that they may apply. Do some homework and get at least three bids, and always compare apples to apples.

May I suggest that, if you don't already have one, add in a programmable thermostat. They are quite sophisticated now, some can be remotely programmed and monitored with a smart phone, or you can go lower tech and have a thermostat that controls heat, a.c., and humidity.

2900 sq ft two story, plus basement--we purchased a high efficiency...I think it was American Standard (we wanted American made) plus ac unit ran us $6600; this was better bundled than paying for each separately (both AC and furnace were the same age)
