Corroded or water damage battery compartment

Anyone think it maybe possible to clean a battery compartment?
I thought the camera was a dead deal, but it has been powering up, just not staying on.

I see corrosion and thought it may be worth trying to clean it out. Even if I get the discolored stuff out, is it too far gone from the water contact? I just thought it was lost after Niagara Falls water got on it, but would like to save it as a back up right now.

It has rechargeable pack but also takes AA batteries. If I put "Fresh AA's" in I can get about 25 pictures before it shuts down. The rechargeable battery pack will not even turn it on.

I thought maybe try lens cleaning cloths, alcohol on q-tips, an eraser tip, vinegar, ????

If the rechargeable pack was in it when it got wet it is most probably toast. Typically there is a fail-safe device in a recharable pack which would have activated if the terminals were shorted (connected) by water.

You can clean the terminals mechanically or chemically - the easiest way (if you can reach the terminals) is simply to take a pencil eraser and 'erase/scrub' the corrosion off. If you can't really get to the terminals easily for erasing them you could try a Q-tip with some rubbing alcohol on it. Just damp - not dripping.

Let the alcohol evaporate and give it a try.

Vinegar would be overkill - only for use if the AAs popped and leaked acid into the compartment.

If you are talking throw away alkalines, then that is about right. They are not meant for cameras. Have you tried out rechargeable AAs? Or lithiums.

You may get a lot more pictures with the flash set to off (not auto) even if you do not take any flash pictures.

If the battery terminals got corroded because of battery leakage, you usually need to scrape off the residue, not just wash it off.

I had AA Energizer's in it at the time. I did not want to run out of power. I was on the Maid of the Mist, covered it, but could not resist a few pictures of the rainbows. DUH....when I got to the Bridal Veil Falls for a few running brook photos, the camera would shut right off, the screen of death showed up. I took the batteries out. But, never thought I could salvage it, and did not do a detox.

When I get the rechargeable AA they work for a dozen or so photos, I use the viewfinder not the LCD, but it shuts down, the screen of death is gone.

It used KLIC-8000, but they will not work in the camera anymore.
Will give a clean up a try, if not, that Okay.
