Coronado Springs Resort -- New Unofficial FAQ Thread -- October 2010

We returned Monday from a 4 night stay at CSR. It started out rocky, but ended well. We arrived really late Thursday night (it was actually close to 2AM on Friday morning.) I had requested top floor anywhere in the Cabanas, but the only rooms left were in the Ranchos. They had us in 7B. I begged for anything in either the Cabanas or Casitas, but there was absolutely nothing else. And to make matters worse, there was no bell staff available to take us to our room. After a half hour, they finally got one of the front desk CM's to drive us over in a van. He walked us to our room, but didn't take any of the bags. Needless to say, our first impression was not good. The fact that our next door neighbor had created their own private smoking area out on the balcony, complete with empty beer cans for ashtrays, made matters worse. The smell seeped into our room. I was not happy, but it was late and we were exhausted. The only real positive was that our room overlooked the quiet pool.

On Friday, we spent the day at AK and returned to find the situation was still an issue. Went into the room and while we got ready for dinner, 2 of our neighbors were outside continuously, smoking and chatting for almost an hour. I called to complain and was told security would be up to take care of things. When we left for dinner, there were 2 other people smoking on the same balcony on the way to the elevator. When we returned from dinner, the beer can ashtrays were still there and my kids and I'd had enough. I know smoking is a bit of a taboo subject here on the DIS, but I had to mention it - I mean how else am I going to explain our displeasure? We called again to complain and were offered an opportunity to move. They told us to start packing and as soon as the room assigner could find us something else, bell services would come move us. It was around 11PM, but I was happy to move right then and there, rather than be inconvenienced the next morning and cut into our park time.

We got moved to Casitas 1, to room 1267. It was on the 2nd floor. LONG walk to the Dig Site, but we learned to love the proximity to El Centro. And we got free wi-fi internet access (a test for building 1 only) so that was an added bonus. I very much appreciate that we were essentially upgraded to a preferred location. It made all the difference and changed our whole perception of CSR. The Casitas have a very upscale feel to them. Honestly, with the exception of the exterior corridors, it felt almost like one of the deluxe resorts. The queen beds are sooooo comfortable. The landscaping is just lovely. By comparison, the Ranchos felt more like a Motel 6 with a nice pool. I know the rooms themselves are identical, but they felt like completely different resorts to us.

We thought the bus service was good; we would catch the buses at El Centro, but use stop 2 upon returning to the resort. Seemed like the walk was about the same, and we got off the bus sooner. We only had breakfast at the Pepper Market, but my kids loved getting a "real" breakfast to start the day. Enjoyed it so much, we used 2 of our 4 CS credits there. I felt like it was a buffet where you could get exactly what you wanted but not worry about eating too much. Very nice concept and far preferable to most CS breakfast options.

We walked over to the Dig Site twice over our 4 night stay. The first time was the night we moved. We are night owls and I was eager to relax in the hot tub and wind down a little. There were only a few other people there. At one point in time, a security guard drove up and was talking to the people on the other side of the pool. My kids were being, well kids and a bit loud and I didn't want to get in trouble. The guard drove over towards us and motioned to me. Then he told me, "maam, there's no need to shush the kids; no one will hear them." I thought it was pretty funny! We also spent most of the day Sunday at the Dig Site. It wasn't crowded at all and the kids loved participating in the games. We thought the slide was great. Overall, the only pool at WDW that I think is better is SAB.

One other interesting occurrence while we stayed at CSR was that first full night when we were headed to AKL for dinner. I opted for taxis rather than buses that night - since it was our only transportation expense for the weekend I thought it was well worth it for the time it saved us. Especially since we were running VERY late for our ADR at Jiko (we got to El Centro with only 10 minutes to spare.) And wouldn't you know it, I couldn't find anyone to get us a taxi. Sure enough, a man over by the entrance mouthed "taxi" to me and I said yes. (I think it was pretty obvious that I was in a hurry to get somewhere.) Anyway, the man turned out to be a limo driver rather than a taxi driver. I was a little unnerved when we got in the car and I saw there was no meter. But I wanted to get to AKL so I just let it go. He charged us $17, which was a bit outrageous (our return trip by legitimate taxi was just about $11.) But he did get us to our ADR and on time, to boot, so I guess that was worth the extra $6. I just thought the whole situation was a little off.

When we left Monday, I stopped by the front desk and asked for a manager so I could thank them for moving us and let them know what a favorable impression we were leaving with. We are DVC members, but I booked a free dining trip. With 2 kids who are adults on the DDP, I thought it was a great deal. We would absolutely stay here again. But I would put in a room request along the lines of "anywhere but the Ranchos." As nice as the Casitas are, I still think the Cabanas have the best overall location, being somewhere in between the Dig Site and El Centro (that's why I requested the Cabanas in the first place.) If we could forget that first night & our inconsiderate neighbors, I'd have nothing but good things to say about CSR.

Thanks for sharing your report. I was considering requesting 7b for our return trip next month. We stayed in the Cabanas in March and the Casitas in August. Now I'm thinking not, since someone else recently complained about the noise from the pool there too.

I think I will stick to requesting 8A or B or Casitas 4 or 5. The Dig Site is the most important for us. I didn't think it was that much of a trek from 5.

I'll be there right in between you two. I should be arriving at CSR about lunch time Saturday.:woohoo:

I'm also hoping for 8A or really anywhere in the Cabanas. I just don't want the Ranchos.:rotfl:

Have a great trip. We arrive 4 weeks from tomorrow. Starting to get that panicked "I haven't got all my planning done" feeling. :scared1:

We had a pool-side room in Ranchos 7B in May. Literally, 20 steps from our door into the deep end of the pool. We heard NO noise from the pool all week, even during afternoon rest times. The most people we saw in the pool all week was probably 12.

We really enjoyed our location - we were less than 2 minutes from the parking lot, 4-5 minutes to the Cabanas bus-stop (closer than the Ranchos one), 3 minutes to the Dig Site, and less than 10 minutes to El Centro.

We stayed in Ranchos 7B last Christmas over looking the pool and loved it! I actually thought the scenery was great. You can't control who will be staying in your building. Noisy or smoking neighbors could happen anywhere. I think in this case it turned everything in that building to a negative. I thought CSR was non smoking? Suprised the resort staff didn't shut these people down, I would have been angry too. We are requesting Casitas 4 this trip to try something different, but definately would not have a problem with Ranchos 7B again.

Was this during the busy middle to end of June? If so, how was it getting a bus at stop #4? I heard it's a nightmare during peak season.

TIA

Used stop #4 last Christmas for our whole trip and had no issues. It doesn't get anymore peak than Christmas.

Oh that's great to hear! Maybe I will request 7B, 8A or B, and Casitas 5 and see where we end up! Being near the Dig Site is what's important to us.

Thanks for the input too!

CSR has designated smoking areas, too bad they weren't enforced.

7B and 8A are the best locations for the Dig Site, IMHO!

Agree with you both. DS13 is autistic and rules are hard and fast to him. I was never gonna hear the end of him talking about the smoking around us. So yes, it would have been nice if people could have been courteous and used the designated areas. It's true that I couldn't see past that overwhelming negative to appreciate the scenery or proximity to the pools.

When I talked to the manager at check out, she said that they have been having issues with smoking in that area. My guess is it's so far from El Centro that they can't have someone out there frequently enough to keep an eye on the situation. Our room was approximately 7 doors down from the elevators, and there were people smoking out on the balcony in at least 3 rooms that we had to pass. The people next to us even kept their door propped open so they could go back and forth easily. The empty cans for ashtrays made the smell linger.

Again, management made things right and we really did enjoy everything else about the resort. And yes, I do realize it can happen anywhere. But this situation was just over the top.

My family and I will be staying there Sept 30-Oct 3!! We are hoping for building 8A again! It was such a great location when we stayed there in June so we'll be crossing fingers for the same location!!!!
My daughters and I will be ther October 1-4 - maybe we will see you there. I requested a first floor room near a bus stop in the Cabanas.

Can you tell me more about this boat? My DD & I sometimes get a little queasy.

We always ride this boat at some point during our trip. I don't think I've ever sat inside though. We like to get a seat outside at the back of the boat. Its a nice calm enjoyable ride.

I think we will give the boat a try, with sea-bands. It sounds like it's the next best thing to the only boat I never got sea sick on . . . The Jungle Cruise at Magic Kingdom . . . of course that is on a rail!

A few weeks back someone extended an offering to get some pix on their up coming trip. If you haven't gone yet and get a chance to go into the shops on site that sell food. Could you get a few pics with prices for cow milk, soy milk and bread? We are flying and will be there 12 day and don't know if I want to use a grocer service or just purchase the items we'll need there. I did see on the first page they carry chips, salsa and donut. And I'm pretty sure the prices will be really high, but at least I can budget or do the service if I have more info. Thank you for you time and kindness. Sandy

I'll be heading down in a little under 2 weeks (erm. or a little over 1 week, I like the sound of that better :)). And will gladly take some pictures for you. (And I think I was the one who offered earlier, at least, I know I did, there very well could have been others too :p).

If you can shoot me a PM with what you need, that'd work better so I don't lose it and can add to my list.

Same goes for anyone else. Though I'll only have a couple mornings and one evening at the resort (rest of my time is taken up doing park/party stuff), I'll gladly take some shots if there's something specific.

I thought I got pics of all the food prices, but looks like I missed quite a bit.

Thanks again!! Just sent the PM. Have a great trip! :goodvibes

Lovethattink...Thank you too!! Your pics were great! It gave me prespective on the fast food there. Since DS has a cow milk allergy I am hoping I don't have to spent more money with the extra luggage to bring soy milk and some extra snack for the room.

Did I tell everyone :disrocks:

I am so sorry that I have been missing in action. We were out of town last week and I have been sick since we got home (today I feel almost normal again). On top of that, my boss just returned after a two month vacation (he is 85 and takes the summer off every year) so work has been really hectic. Therefore, my DIS time has been extremely limited.

It looks as if ALL questions have been answered by others. If something has been missed, please repost and I will try to answer in a more timely fashion. Also, as a reminder, I am leaving in 11 days for our trip to Disney, and this thread is getting close to the page limit. So keep an eye out and StitchandPoohsMom will be posting a "temporary" thread if this goes over 250 while I am gone. I will get a new one started the weekend after we get home (the weekend of October 8 and 9).

For all of you leaving soon, have a magical trip and a wonderful stay at CSR.
