Coronado Springs Resort -- New Unofficial FAQ Thread -- October 2010

Just upgraded from POP for our first Disney Christmas. I was there with DH in February and loved it. I was hoping to get POR this trip for the new rooms (My DD14 birthday is Dec. 25 and she loves Princess and the Frog), but by the time I could afford to upgrade they were sold out of free dining rooms.

I will miss the boat to DTD, but I know CSR will be a quiet restful retreat from the holiday madness. And the central air unit will be better for my DD allergies.

Hello,

I've seen mixed reviews on the food at Pepper Market.

Can anyone recommend what is good to eat there?

What should I avoid?

Leaving in 40 days! :yay: Thanks.

Last January, my family and I ate there and we really liked it we made the trip over from PO just to have the steak my soon to niece in law had the shrimp alfredo and she enjoyed it also.

Has anybody tried to put a twin size airbed in the room between the first bed and the door. My kids are DD14 and DS12 and they don't really want to share a bed and I thought this might be a good compromise.

We have used a queen air bed and a twin air bed (on different trips). The queen requires sliding the dresser a little bit toward the bathroom, then sliding the desk up against the dresser. The twin air mattress didn't require any rearranging. I have two girls, but they don't like to sleep together, so we bring an air mattress.

I tried looking through posts of around christmas time last year but didn't see any...

does CSR have holiday decor??

I'm *thisclose* to booking my Dec trip!! :cool1:

I have seen pictures of a giant Christmas tree in the lobby as well as garland hanging in the main building. I thought it was on this thread, but I couldn't find it, so it must be somewhere else. Maybe it was in someone's trip report.

10 days! We plan on decorating our window for Halloween. It's going to be awesome!

Anyone happen to know how big the windows are?

I'm also pretty excied about the fancy bath soaps. It's the little things that bring me great joy.

Hey there! Looks like you are checking into CSR on the same day that we are. Anniversary trip for you guys too?

CSR was my 1st onsite resort stay and now finally booked again today for a short trip in three weeks. Wishing for a ranchos or cabanas stay again and so looking forward to Epcot Food and Wine again. Hope all of you who are going agai have a wonderful trip with many magical memories.

Let me start this review by writing that my husband did not want to try this resort. He did not want to stay at a convention hotel. He did/does not like the idea of a bunch of people without families, staying at the most family oriented place on earth. Finds the idea just a little creepy. I on the other hand wanted to try it because it was suppose to be a little more upscale. Kind of a deluxe resort without the deluxe price. Plus it was the only moderate we had not tried. After showing him the convention schedule (that showed no conventions) for our vacation dates, the gym pictures as well as the Queen beds, my spouse agreed, reluctantly. FYI, my husband is in law enforcement. He has seen how much trouble conventioneers gets into when they are away from their families. There where some small conventions during our stay, but no problems except for one drunk guy trying to find his room one night.
We stayed at CSR for 12 nights: Aug 25th through Sept.6th. and we most likely will not ever return. It was just okay. The resort while beautiful, felt like just another hotel you might stay at anywhere else. Does not have that Disney Magic.
Check in went fine, the young lady who check us in was friendly and very sweet, especially to our nine year old daughter. She gave our girl a balloon and wished her a happy birthday. We finished checking in at 8 p.m. and where taken to our room in Casitas 3 right away. We paid for a preferred site at the Casitas because we read somewhere that bus stop 2 was the first pick up site. Since we did not rent a car paying a little extra for the site made sense to us.
The only room request I made was that we did not want a room near the elevators. Well our room was by the elevators. Called the front desk and they told us the hotel was full. Explained to them we would not be staying in that room and we would go to another hotel on property if necessary. They suddenly found another room in Casitas 2. Someone came to help with our luggage and bring us new keys. Luggage service drove us to our new room and brought our luggage up to the 3rd floor. This was all done in the space on 1/2 an hour.
The new room looked just like the old one; it had 2 Queen beds, a desk where Disney usually places a table, and ottoman for seating instead of chairs. The dresser is smaller and has less draw space then other moderate resorts, but the television is one of the new flat screens. Oh yeah they have 2 beautiful doors with shiny pointy handles that separate the vanity/bath area from the sleeping area. Our daughter was carrying toiletries to the vanity when she tripped and her face connected to those shiny pointy handles.
We called the front desk and asked them how to get to the hospital, they said they would send up someone to help. They sent the manager, a security guard and 2 paramedics within 5 minutes. After answering questions about what happened and cleaning up my daughter's wound the paramedics told us that if we wanted her treated at the clinic we would have to let them know right away. The clinic it seems closes at 9:30 and someone else would have to pick us up and drive us there. This news had our girl freaking out. The idea of stitches, even butterfly stitches sent her over the edge and a new round of hysterics began. We declined and opted not to go, deciding that calming our child was our #1 priority. After calming her down and putting her to bed my husband went to go to the rest room and walked right into one of the doors. He hated the room and those doors especially.
I Have to say, the paramedics could not have been nicer. They left band-aids and bacitracin. They also told us if we changed our minds the clinic opened up at 9 the next morning. Hopefully the angry red scar on my daughter's eyebrow will one day fade.
Did i mention that Casitas 2 actually comes AFTER Casitas 3, and it does not have it's own elevator? Or that it sits further back then Casitas 1 and 3. The whole Casitas setup is very complicated. Took days to figure it out, AND IT REALLY WAS NOT WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY. We still had to hike over to the bus stop. The buses came frequently except the bus to DTD. We always had to wait a while for that particular bus.
The quiet pool was never really quiet. People swam in it at all hours and they screamed into the night. Spoke to a Canadian family at the quiet pool, they swam in it nightly, because the Dig Site Pool was just to far from the Casitas. I agreed. We did visit the main pool on several occasions and loved it. The best pool on Disney property so far for us, BUT very far way, especially after a long day at the parks. Went 4 times and my daughter loved the movies at night and the sandy play area. The game room was lovely as well.
The Pepper Market's waiters where fine and dandy, but, yes another but, the grill staff; DOUR and SOUR. They did not speak to anyone, they ignored you unless you spoke up,, and they served your food like you were a 10 year old on the free lunch program. I witnessed 2 women on the grill only speaking to each other in Spanish, ignoring a woman with small children trying to ask them a question. The beefier of the 2 women rather than answering the customer's question pointed to the sign they had hanging up. We only ate there only twice because even the cashiers had attitude. The Maya Grill's food was mediocre. The food at Shutters and Boatwrights is much better. We did have a nice waiter.
There is no recreation at the resort. No boats, no bikes, no nothing. For such a big place there is very little to do.
Housekeeping always did a good job and we got towel creations twice. Never tried the gym, or spa. The laundry room was clean and well kept and the gift shop staff could not have been nicer. I really wanted to love the place, alas my feelings about it are just lukewarm, like the food at the Maya Grill.

Some of the flavors there last week:
Fudge brownie, double chocolate, coconut
Strawberry, Lemon, Strawberry cheesecake :)
Coffee, Oreo cookie, and Tres Leche (?)
I miss them already....

Ummm! Lemon and Tres Leche=sooo good!

hmmmmm no offence but you seem hard to please, maybe it was your daughter getting hurt and that threw everything off for you......... :confused3

Sorry that you didn't love CSR, and I hope your daughter has recovered fully. I have a DD about the same age, and she is the one in our family who is going to get injured on vacation - we have made many trips to Urgent Care in other states. :sad2:

I love the sliding doors at CSR because I can get up, shower, dry my hair and get ready without waking the kids, so they get a little extra sleep. But given your family's history with the doors, I can see where you would not be a fan of them. I think they are a huge improvement over the curtains at the other moderates.

The preferred rooms at CSR are designed to be close to the main building and the convention center, which is why we don't book preferred. We would much rather be closer to the Dig Site and have a longer walk to the main building to eat. My kids want to be at the pool every afternoon, while we will eat at Pepper Market once or twice per trip. I do think Casitas 2 is one of the worst locations for families (although convenient for convention people) - it has no elevator, as you discovered, and it is far from anywhere else except the main building and the convention center.

I am happy to hear that you had good housekeeping and good service from the front desk and management. We have always had good servers at Pepper Market, but some of the grill staff do seem to want to be anywhere but where they are. The CMs in the gift shop are awesome, aren't they? :goodvibes

One note about the quiet pools - they are not intended to be "quiet". I think that is a DIS term instead of a Disney term. I think Disney refers to them as leisure pools, meaning that they don't have the theming and slides or water features that the main pools have. Disney expects families with kids to utilize all the pools, so there will definitely be noise where there are kids swimming.

Glad you gave it a try, and if you do ever consider returning as a family, you might enjoy the cabanas section. That is where we request, and it is close to the Dig Site and not that far from the main building (two stories high, all buildings have elevators, and they are not preferred). Casitas 4 and 5 are also nice locations - close to the first bus stop and not that far from the Dig Site or El Centro. Ranchos get the least amount of love, but the area is very quiet and Ranchos 7B is close to the Dig Site but also has a quiet pool and laundry.

Thanks for sharing your experience! :goodvibes

CSR is NOT the only convention resort on Disney property. Grand Floridian, Contemporary, and I think Boardwalk along with Dolphin and Swan also host conventions.

Not saying that everyone does, but many times the folks attending the conventions will bring along their families for them to enjoy the parks during the day and then have family time in the evening. The get the benefit of their company picking up the room tab and they pay for everything else for their family.

We just returned from our stay at the CSR Sept. 25th-28th. While there are a few drawbacks, the experience was overall very positive and if we ever stayed moderate instead of deluxe again we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

I had requested Cabanas 8a or 8b, but were put in Ranchos 6b. At first I was very put off, hauling our luggage all the way over from El Centro to the Ranchos, then finding the building, THEN trying to find our room was a little frustrating since the buildings are not clearly marked, especially to an already grumpy DH. After we figured our our way around, however, we really learned to appreciate our location. It is beautiful and authenticly mexico/southwest themed and it is so quiet back there you can hear a pin drop in the courtyards. If you are honeymooning or are a childless couple looking for some peace, Ranchos is a great choice. Because we spend a great deal of our time at WDW poolside, if we did stay at CSR again I would insist on being in the Cabanas.

The pool is hands down AMAZING! We refilled ourugs and ate lunch poolside at Siestas nearly every day. It was so much nicer than hauling up to El Centro. The pool activities are so much fun, the slide is fantastic, and I really appreciated the large size of the pool itself after being so used to the beautiful, yet teeny tiny pool at the Polynesian. We played Disney Trivia and won once, and did nearly every contest and game they offered. It was great for the kids to have so much to do. I honestly think the CSR pool is right behind Stormalong Bay as the best pool on property.

The landscaping and architecture throughout the resort are authentic and lovely. The bus stops were all very convenient to each section and the bus service was outstanding, save one fairly long wait yesterday trying to return from the MK early afternoon. The CSR really has a great location right off of World Drive. It would have been very easy to access by car and the bus commutes were extremely reasonable.

Cafe Rix was great for a quick breakfast. Hot breakfast sandwiches and yummy baked goods. We still had 2 meal credits left over as we were leaving so we ran in and grabbed sandwiches to eat at the airport which was perfect because it saved us from buying another meal at the airport. I may always do this from now on it worked so well.

Even my husband the grump was happy with our stay. The beds were very comfy and we both loved the sliding doors to shut off the vanity area. It allowed my DD and I to get ready without disturbing the sleepy grump! I personally like that much better than a curtain and wish all mod's would follow suit.

Thanks everyone for the info on this thread, I think knowing so much ahead of time what to expect really helped make our experience less stressful and more enjoyable!

I have seen pictures of a giant Christmas tree in the lobby as well as garland hanging in the main building. I thought it was on this thread, but I couldn't find it, so it must be somewhere else. Maybe it was in someone's trip report.

Thank you! I'll google it! :goodvibes

Thanks for the review, and I'll glad you enjoyed your trip! We have not stayed in Ranchos in all our stays at CSR, but I walked over there from cabana 8A last trip to use the laundry. I think I would like 7B - close to the Dig Site, laundry and the quiet pool. I still like the cabanas best for location, but I actually think the ranchos and casitas are prettier since the cabanas look like any tropical-themed resort.

Hi all! I've taken over the 2011 Confirmed Snacks thread and wondering if anyone that has stayed at CSR recently has any photos showing the CS menus with DDP next to snacks? Or if you are going soon could you take a few photos and send them to me?

We are going to WDW in just 8 days but I don't think I'll make it to CSR to verify the Snack choices. Right now I have very little current info on any locations there that allow usage of SC.

Does Cafe Rix take SC for their Gelatos?

TIA

I tried looking through posts of around christmas time last year but didn't see any...

does CSR have holiday decor??

I'm *thisclose* to booking my Dec trip!! :cool1:

I took a bunch of pictures in December 2008 and you can see them here starting at post #728. There is also a CSR picture thread here with lots of pictures of the resort including Christmas decorations.

Here is a taste of what you might see!
