Corelle dishes?

I guess I'm a lone wolf here, but I hated my Corelle set. I liked the different patterns of them, but that was about it. For me they weren't durable at all and as others have said, when they break it is into a million little pieces making clean up really difficult. My husbands and kids were always breaking them. I got rid of them and got a set of Firenza from JcPenney to replace them. They're heavy and yes, they take up more room in the cupboard, but when they break there are 3 or 4 big pieces to clean up and that's it. Plus because they're heavier my family is more careful with them. And we feel like we're using the "good china" at meals because they look nicer.

I hate mine too! They were a wedding gift from my SILs, who decided for some reason that I must like orange dish ware. I really dislike them--good news is, after 28 years of marriage, the bloody pattern is starting to wear off! I am seriously considering donating them to a thrift shop, so some other poor woman can 'enjoy' them!

I still have the Corelle dishes I received when I got married 19 years ago and I love them. They take up minimal space and are lightweight. I have a set of Disney Christmas dishes and they are big, bulky and heavy! Wish they'd make them in Corelle, instead.

As most have said I LOVE my Corelle dishes. I have 2 different patterns and have had the first for about 25 years. They do shatter when broken, however a broken Corelle dish is rare. I also like that I can go to a Corning Ware outlet store and get individual pieces to go with my dishes. They have everything from the dishes to serving pieces without having to buy a whole set. I grew up using Corelle and my Mom still uses her dishes everyday! :)

I love my Corelle dishes! We have been married for 29 years and still have the same set. I bought a new set in a different pattern to use for special occasions. I have not broken a single piece. Mine are round.

DD got married last year and they have a square pattern. She puts them in the dishwasher and has plenty of room.

Sometimes I wish they didn't last so long because I am a bit tired of the pattern!

Most of the older members of my family have them, and all have the same love/hate relationship due to factors mentioned repeatedly above:
1)love the lightweight, don't take up much space aspect
2)hate the 8 bajillion pieces they "shard" into when broken (I have dogs and I never wear shoes in the house and believe me, when you get one of those little shards stuck in your foot, it means a trip to the e.r. or the vet, depending on your species ;))

Good tip about the lint roller though!

Terri

I have had the same set since like 1996, can't tell they aren't new. I am not careful with them or anything. They go in the microwave, dishwasher or whatever. They are really nice. I also have some that are older than 96 I am sure (I got them at a yard sale)...they are just as good.

My only complaint is mine have designs on them and there is no way I could ever find more that match I figure. I also have 2 different patterns because they are different sets the old ones and the older ones. I have only broken one in the last 16 years, that was from dropping something on it.

They are good tough dishes, and light.

My mother gave me a set of plain white, round Corelle when I moved out at 18. Those dinner plates survived being thrown at an ex. :lmao: Twenty years later my eldest has shattered two bowls. We give her such a hard time since she's the only person we know who has ever broken a Correlle dish.

I bought some heavy duty dishes to match my kitchen when I got married and over the years they have chipped and cracked so when we moved we decided to get new dishes. I went back to Corelle the main reason being that the "salad" plates were the perfect size for me to help control portions. (I lost 67lbs and want to keep it that way) I bought the square ones and love them. I think they fit in the dishwasher even better then round plates. My pattern goes across the plate and kind of gets scratched up but honesty that's better then big, heavy, chipped plates that are much easier to break.

Plain white is the only one you can get replacements for 30 years from now. I have them and like them.

Another Corelle owner! 2 sets in off white, maybe almond? Other sets I thought along the years I just had to have are packed up and not being used. I really need to get rid of them. The others are pfaltzgraff. They are too big and heavy. Got tons of pieces even casserole and serving dishes. This made me think of them maybe I will put them on craigslist or ebay.

I got a new set at Christmas and I was so excited about it. We haven't even used them yet! We just keep using the Corelle.

I have Corelle dishes that are over 30 years old. I also have some in a second pattern that are only about 15 years old. I have purchased more of the second pattern off eBay and at Goodwill, including the matching glassware. We don't break many dishes or glasses, but if a plate breaks, there can be small pieces.

I got matching glass & silverware when I got married
the glasses & silverware are broken (son had a thing of dropping the glasses & watching them break along with all of my other glass glasses)
but the plates, bowls, soup bowls etc - I have only lost 1

wish they would remake the older designs so we can add

I'm thinking about getting new kitchen dishes.

I like that Corelle dishes take up very little room in the cabinet.

Does anyone really love or hate their kitchen dishes?

Any words of wisdom on picking a small pattern or large, colorful pattern that's covers almost the entire plate?

How well do the plates that are square and not round fit in the dishwasher?

TIA

I love my Corelle. I've had them for years. They are not round, but I did fall in love with the pattern. Antique Linen, it is sort of toile look in black and white of fruit.

The reason I bought them is because they look really good with my China and because of that it extends my China set on the Holidays for a serving of 24. I mix the patterns on the table and it looks beautiful.

I posed this same question on a different forum about 6 months ago. We have a set of Corelle dishes that DH has had for about 25 years, and only one has been broken, so I knew they'd hold up well. I ended up going to a Corning/Corelle outlet near me and picked out this pattern:

I love them! The pasta bowls (the bottom one in the picture, same size as the dinner plate) are the best thing ever- they fit in the dishwasher just like a plate (taking up less space than a regular bowl) and still get completely clean. We use them for salads and some soups, as well as pasta- even occasionally sloppy casseroles!

I have also been buying a few plain white pieces to go with them. I wish Corelle would make coordinating patterns, so I could have 2 sets of dishes that "go together" without being exactly the same. That's why I've been adding plain white pieces.

Another Corelle fan here. I originally bought two sets for $5.00 a set for our camper. And when Hurricane crushed camper I brought them in the house for a change. That was over 9 years ago. Ummm, maybe I need a new pattern now.

I love my Corelle, I've had the same set for 18 years. One of the plates has a chip on the edge and I think one may have shattered on the floor when one of my kids dropped it.

When we got married, we picked out a Lenox stoneware pattern for our dishes. Someone gave us a set of plain white (round) Corelle dishes as a shower gift, which I didn't think I'd like, but it was fine for our little starter apartment.

We still have pieces almost 25 years and four houses later, plus added the big bowls/platters and replaced the few broken pieces. They're so light and durable - I often use the plates or platter as a cutting board because it's easy to clean. Just watch the edges as the dishes age - I've noticed some sharp spots on my original pieces.

This is silly, but we bought the cat two small bowls with a green rim. We wash them in the dishwasher so the cat always has clean dishes, too.

I don't like the Corelle mugs - they get red-hot when you fill them up for tea. Too hot to handle so we stick with ceramic mugs instead.
On the same note, I always let the dishes cool before I put them away. I had one break in the cabinet at eye level when I put it away. It was sharp and hot, so I wait before unloading the dishwasher now.

I've had a few pieces break and the shards are really sharp, like needles. The pieces just seem to explode when they break! Definitely not safety glass.

To clean up broken Corelle, use the dustpan/broom and vacuum, but I like to run a sticky-tape lint roller over the floor/countertop as well. It always picks up a few little splinters that everything else missed. (I wouldn't recommend the masking tape-over-hand method; you could get cut. The roller is much safer.) I do the same for broken drinking glasses. Since I don't wear shoes inside, it's better to spend 10 minutes with a lint roller than finding the shards with my foot!

Just a FYI, Corelle changed their mugs a few years ago. Instead of being made of the same material as the dishes now, they are regular ceramic mugs.

I bought the plain white dishes about 5 years ago. We've only managed to break 2 of them so far, and that was when they hit the tile floor the wrong way. Most of the time, they just "bounce" right off the floor. I even trust my 2 year old DD with them, since they're so break resistant.

I bought 2 of the starter sets, and then added salad plates, flat pasta bowls (not sure of the name), deep bowls, and some mini bowls. I also got some mid-sized 3 compartment plates for my toddler. We have a Corelle store at a nearby outlet mall. They aren't necessarily cheaper, but they have all of the various pieces and patterns.

Let me second those posters who said they can break. And when they do, the edges are brutally sharp. I have an inch long scar on the top of my foot due to a broken plate. I think I ended up with 6 stitches.

Another fan here! I wanted my Grandma's set when she died even though it was white with an ugly gold pattern around the rim. I didn't speak up fast enough and ended up with her Fire King set instead.

I collect Fiesta but quit using it on a daily basis when the kids were little. I ended up with some cheapy plastic target plates and tupperware plates. They did the job with small kids, but would get damaged and yucky fairly quick. I would wait for a clearance sale and buy more. A couple of years ago Wal-Mart had patriotic sets of Correlle with just dinner plates, bowls and dessert plates around the 4th of July. I waited until after the holiday and think I paid $10 for each box of four settings. I have picked up lunch plates and bigger bowls here and there.

I love them. They come out of the dishwasher looking brand new, stack easily in a small place and were cheap. My only gripe is that the heat from the food goes right through them if you ever eat with a plate on your lap. We haven't had any break yet.

I have corelle in my "lake" box... what we take on vacation with us. It's the blue gingham pattern. My 80 year old mom insists they are plastic... :sad2:
