Convince me to convince my husband not to cancel our 3 day stay at Vero Beach

Well, even though I am a little hesitant on posting this, I said I would post here once we returned on how we liked our stay at Vero so here goes.
March 15, 1:00 pm we check out of the Yacht Club resort and head on down to meet Vero Beach club members which are friends of ours down there. They had signed my daughter up for the camp there in the am however she was only put on a waiting list due to the camp only having room for 20 children which needed to be ages 3-12 (My daughter is 12 and so is their daughter.) We arrive at Vero at 3:00 pm so it took 2 hours for us to get there. We were all very excited however when ever we pulled up to the resort our hearts almost stopped.
We were not at all impressed with the structure nor the location of this resort. We said to our selves that we would make the best at what they had to offer since many good things were listed here on the boards. So we checked in. Mind you I paid close to 400.00 for a Ocean view Inn room. We go to our room and all excited to see the ocean and the first thing that hit us was an AWFUL MILDEW SMELL!!!! As I hold my breath along with my family walking to the balcony to see the ocean we open the doors and BAM!!!! All we see is Palm trees!!!  I was sooo mad. We needed to lean over the rail of our balcony to see the ocean. We immediate held our breath again while walking through the room and took all our luggage and headed to the front desk. I told them I was not paying that price for a room the Smelled of MILDEW SOOOO BAD and to look at Palm trees. They then gave me a full ocean view room however it was a handicap room. So we headed to the room. Whenever we opened up that door it was like being hit with CHEMICAL WARFARE!!!! OOOHHH MY GOSH!!! We went in and opened the balcony door in hopes that them smell would go away and it just would not go away at all. As I am sitting there looking over the schedule of things to do which I might add is not very much at all I begin to have a asthma attach. The mildew in the room was soo bad that it triggered my asthma and made everyone in my family nausea. We immediately left the room with all our bags I am sitting on the floor in the hallway trying to get my breath with my Maxair in hand inhaling every 5 min. Finally we all were feeling a little better and walked around the property to give it yet another chance because many people here have talked soooo highly of this resort.
Well Im sorry to say that we were not at all impressed. I was actually very very surprised that Disney has their name on this property. I would of paid the 400 a night to stay at the ALL STARS resorts rather than this resort any day. The activities were very few and age limited and it seemed that it was a much much older crowd. Even the pool at the ALL STARS resort is 10 times better than this pool.
We at this time decided to call our friends that were waiting for us there and tell them that we were going to call Disney to cancel this due to us not being happy with the resort and me not being able to sleep inside the room due to the smell and that we wanted to go back to Disney world resorts. Once I did call her she met up with us in the main entrance and told us that she also had to change rooms 4 times due to the Mildew smell and other problems with the rooms. She as well was very disappointed however her husband goes golfing down there every year and since they are DVC members, they use there points toward this resort.
We then called 1-407-wdisney and told them of our problem and that we wanted to go back to Disney for the 3 days we had left. The man on the line with husband was sooo nice and stated that we were the 3rd family that requested to be moved from Vero and back to Disney that day. He stated that he would need to check what was available on Disney property before saying yes to a change. When he came back he could not give us an Epcot resort as we wanted however did offer the Animal Kingdom lodge Savannah Room which was the only room they stated they had left due to everything being book since it was spring break. We said anything other than Vero please and took it right away. They then proceed to contact the front desk while we were on the line with them as well as at the front desk at Vero and took care of all the transfers ect. Mind you I am still having tons of trouble breathing and am using my Maxair like it is going out of style.
Once everything was all set we headed back to Disney. We were sooo happy once again even though it would take us 2 hours to get back there. Once we arrive at the Animal Kingdom Lodge we were so amazed and very very Happy!!! This resort is an absolute beautiful resort and I would definitely book this resort over and over again. The savannah view was amazing with the animals right in front of our balcony the pool awesome as well as simbas clubhouse. The restraunts to die for BOMA and JIKO and the people once again friendly cheery, and most of all the MILDEW SMELL was gone.
So I must say that our very short stay at Vero Beach was a disaster and one that will never ever happen again. My family did not find it appealing at all to us.
I must add that we are from Massachusetts and stay at many many hotel and Inns in Newport and Cape Cod on the Ocean and not one of them ever had such a Mildew smell as Vero Beach did. I think it is due to poor up keeping.

Are you sure that you went to the correct resort??? Holy smokes! I can understand being upset about mildew smell, and lack of an ocean view, but being soooo disappointed with the structure truly puzzles me...

Oh well, each to their own. I am sorry VB did not live up to expectations. :(
Thanx for the report.

You must go! Don't cut your vacation short. Visit the Dodgers Spring Training. I hear Dodger town is awesome. Maybe DH got hit on the head and has lost his senses. Hit him again to bring him to.

Wow, sorry to hear your day trip was so bad for you

Having been at VB now 3 times, I have not had any of the experiences you are listing

That is really unfortunate

Glad to hear that AKL Savannah perked things up for you

thanks

We did a YC/VB trip last fall.

As you can tell by our pictures, we had a ball!!
http://homepage.mac.com/energylab/PhotoAlbum2.html

I'm sorry you did not like VB. It is not for everyone. There have been plenty of hotels where we have wanted to leave a minute after arriving. There are plenty of friends who shake their heads at us when we tell them we go to VB without going to WDW. They can't imagine setting foot in Florida without going to Orlando.

Our room usually smells like nail polish remover but we figured it was just the cleaner they use. The smell does go away after a while. I'm sure they have a hard time keeping the moisture levels down at a resort in Florida that is right on the ocean.

I think the appearance of the resort is very grand and always get a good feeling in my stomach when we drive up to check in. Is there something specific you did not like about it?

We also had palm trees in front of our room the first time we stayed there. It was on the side of the resort and overlooked the pool. This turned out to be a wonderful room for us because we could see everything going on by the pool and still see the ocean. Were you also placed on the side of the resort?

Again, I'm sorry you did not enjoy it. Did you at least go in the pool? The slide is really fun and the pool is seldom crowded like at WDW.

Thanks for posting and I'm glad everything worked out in the end. :D

You are right, some resorts are not for everyone, and we are actually happy we did go and see if for ourselves because now we know that the resort is not for us at all. As for our view it actually was on the other side of the building (not the pool side) facing the other buildings and palm trees. This was upsetting to us due to me paying 385.00 for this room and when booked they stated to be it would be a ocean view room. I could of stayed at the Yacht Club concierge lagoon view room with my ap for those three days for that much money (well actually maybe a few dollars more) plus have soooooo much more to do. Also what upset us is the advertising pictures of Vero makes it look as though the property is right on the beach front when in fact it is not. Also the hotel itself had corrosion. I know that it is a waterfront property however as I stated I am in Newport as well as the Cape all summer long and the hotels here do not have that at all and they are right on the ocean front. The deck leading to the beach was also not as nice as I feel it should of been. It was just very old wood that was actually falling apart. One section was acually closed off due to it being worked on.
These problems however were not the main problem as I stated in my post. The biggest problem out of them all was the smell. If you only could of smelt it. It was sooooo bad, and also as I stated my friend as well that is a DVC member there had to change her room 4 times. This made me think as well....... If they were able to change her room 4 times how many people were actually there??? When I did go down to the pool and to Eb and Flos to see what they had to offer there was only 2 kids in the pool. Little kids with older parents or grandparents. This worried me because if this was such a GREAT resort why wouldnt it be booked during SPRING BREAK time!! My friend was able to change rooms 4 times and me 2 times and only 2 kids in the pool. Makes me wonder a little.
Any how Im sure that others find this resort as Magical as I do the Yacht Club and as long as they are happy then thats GREAT!!! I was even afraid to come on the boards and post my review because of not wanting to ruin other possible first vacations so this way they could expeirence it themselves however I did state that I would and so I did.
I am also glad that we ended up at the AKL Savannah room because we had never stayed there before and we ended up finding out that we absolutely love this resort. It is totally amazing how they built this resort and the artwork is as amazing as well. You should try the Savannah room sometime with your children they would absolutely love it. My daughter was in awe to see the giraffes and the zebras right under our balcony.
By the way your children are beautiful and it did look like your were having a ball.

Don't feel bad for posting your report. Every resort is not for everyone.

I think if I walked down to the pool and there were only 4 people there I would jump up and down with joy.

We've been fortunate enough to have a room facing the ocean or the pool every time. I don't suppose I would want to look at other buildings, either.

I'm a little confused as to what you mean by the resort not being directly on the beach.

They often have the one section of the ramp closed because the waves are horrible for it and they have to constantly repair it. I'm sorry you thought things weren't in good repair. Last Fall when we were there they were painting, cleaning the pool deck, fixing the boardwalk and several other things.

Thanks for the compliment about my kiddies. I think they're cute, too.

I'm glad you had a good time at AKL. It's amazing.

Again, don't feel bad.

I second the thanx for posting the report. Yes, I was a little shocked at some things, but we all have different tastes (that's a good thing.) :D

PS- Yes, AKL is a great place. We will be there again on April 15th... :cool2:

You are entitled to your opinion but I think your distress at the odor may have clouded your perception of other factors. There is a dune between the resort and the Atlantic Ocean. I don't see how much closer it could be to the ocean without worrying that it will be "in" the ocean in a few year's time. The walkway out to the ocean is "weathered" intentionally. And yes, the stairs and the handicap ramp are being repaired -- a woman who posts daily beach reports has mentioned this in her reports. Because of being so close to the ocean, even minor storms wash out the ramp. They are trying a new design to try and correct this.

Here's a quote from today's Global Lifeguard update:

Disney Updates. A crew was working away on the beach-side ramp project. They are turning the end of the ramp away from the ocean as they’ve done with the stairs. It will be removable, so they can take it off in case of storms or high tides. Disney guests need to use the new beachside stairs while work is taking place on the ramp.

I'm not sure I understand where the corrosion comes in. The actual design of the building was dictated by the zoning in the area -- it blends as much as possible into the landscape.

My cousin and her husband were at the resort last weekend. I'll be curious to hear how their stay was

I can sympathize with you on your ‘smell’ experience. We had a very similar problem at the Polly this August. The room smelled horrible! We called the front desk; they apologized and moved us to a new room, which didn’t smell at all. As great a resort as the Polynesian is, I never really got over being ‘grossed’ out by the first room. I guess in Florida (or probably anywhere) you can have maintenance issues such as these. It seems from your post that Vero did what they could to try to make things ‘right’. The Polly was also very accommodating.

We will be going to Vero for our first time in a few weeks. I hope we don’t have the smelly room issues. As for the activities, give me a beach, a pool, some room to bike and run, caring and happy CMs and sunny 80-degree days and I’ll be happy!

Vero has gotten some very high ratings from respectable travel magazines such as Conde Nast. Yours is the first post/review I’ve read where there have been problems. I’m counting on your experience being the exception, not the rule. Sorry you had a bad trip.

alwaysrunning,

As I mentioned in my post, we always seem to have a nail polish remover smell in our room. We only notice it when we have been out of the room for a period of time and then return. I think it is just the smell of the resort.

Every room we've stayed in has been spotless! I've never smelled mildew or at least what I think is mildew. To me, mildew would smell like a typical Michigan basement.

I wouldn't worry too much. Vero is amazing. It's very laid back and the CM's make you feel like family.

Are you going to bike near the resort? If so, would you mind posting about how it went upon your return?. We are spending 10 days at VB in the Fall before Ironman Florida so my DH can take advantage of the wonderful roads and bike lanes near the resort.

Nail polish remover smell - I can live with that! That was not what we smelled in the room at the Polly - wouldn't even want to guess what it was but I guess it could have been mildew. At any rate the CMs at Polly were great about moving us.

We have grand plans for Vero! I will post for sure - hopefully all good!

ellieb, thanks for sharing your experience and you should not be afraid to post your perceptions and experience on the boards

It is most appreciated

I am wondering about the corrison thing as well - was there some siding that had changed colour or something?

I can also appreciate your frustration with the room - at that price I would expect full front ocean view not an obstructed view

thanks

I don't understand how you can get any closer to the ocean than the VB resort already is.

Wow! But my grades are in, I'm beginning to pack, and can't wait to see and experience Vero Beach!

I'm very happy that the AKL experience was so enjoyable.

We stayed at VB in an OF room last April and there was a slight mildew smell - and I noticed a wet spot on the rug next to the bed every morning. We were on the top floor, under and eave and I think there must be some sort of wicking from the evening moisture that caused it. Even with that though, it was noticeable, but not unbearable. I have allergies and it didn't bother them. We stayed again in a side room and had no smell. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I just love the place - but it isn't like their on property resorts. It is much more low-key, but, imo, still wonderful. You probably shouldn't ever try the Hilton Head resort either. It's definitely not on the beach - and usually less activities than VB. We were at VB in October, and the pool was pretty packed then. I'm so surprised it was so empty in March - I would have thought that would be an extremely busy time.

Again, sorry your trip stunk - glad AKl made up for it.
