We are ready to take the plunge and convert from oil to gas We are in long island. Anyone recently convert and are willing to share their costs? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

We switched about 3 years ago. We have saved a lot of money since then. We paid about $8500. We financed and were able to take the energy credit on our taxes that year I think it's worth the cost in the long run. Good luck.

My IL's just did it this week. I called her and this is what she said:

National grid didn't charge them because they were within 100 feet of the gasline.

their grand total was 9500.00 that included:

1,000 for permit
gas burner (slim like a flat panel tv?)
all interior lines (they put in a gas dryer too but not a gas stove)
changed from radiators to baseboard heating

they have a small 3 bedroom ranch that was destroyed during Sandy. they hope to get back in a few weeks!

Hope that helps a little.

Oh, I should add, the did contact national grid back in Nov to be put on a list and it was just done.

We did it last summer. We already had natural gas in our home (cooking and hot water) so it didn't cost anything to convert the heater from oil to gas. The heating company just made the changes in the pipes, took out the tank, capped things off, etc. Our new boiler cost about $7000 which we financed. We also were able to get over $1100 in rebates from Peco ($300 for the conversion; $800 for the boiler). We also got back money for all the oil that was in the tank - another $350 or so

Your biggest obstacle will be if there is gas available where you are (close to a pipe). It may seem like a lot of money to convert but at the cost of oil (and it keeps rising) you will end up saving a lot of money. My job handles conversions for commercial places, we have a cost savings tool that I would think could help you (even though your a homeowner) so you can see when you actually start saving money. Shoot me a PM if your interested and ill take a look tomorrow.

We just did it about 2 months ago. Already had gas lines to the house for our gas stove & dryer. We got a decent energy efficient boiler for about $1800, a separate hot water heater for $800, and approx $4000 for the install, new pipes (old ones weren't thick enough for code), removal of tank & oil burner, lining of chimney, and they sealed the hole with concrete (so we can't get any accidental oil deliveries, if you remember that happening to a few people last winter!!) They also installed a new programmable thermostat, included in that cost. We got a $500 rebate from National Grid & are expecting another $400 from somewhere else any day now.

The gas bill is lower than my oil bill ever was & another perk is all the extra room in my basement now that the tank is gone! :cool1:

Good luck!! I think it's money well spent!

We are on Long Island and switched to natural gas about 3 years ago. We have saved money ever since. It's much cleaner and we are very happy with it. We had a 1,000 gal tank before we switched and could buy oil when it was reasonable. Now we don't have to worry about that. I can't believe the price of oil now. Natural gas is so much better. If you have natural gas on your street check it out.

Op here. We do not have any gas to the house but it is available. I did call key span several months ago and was told it would cost around $700! To bring the gas to the house.

What is your oil cost running? My gas bill last month was almost $300 and we were gone for two weeks at Christmas. That left my 19yo at home alone and he only ran the heat upstairs. And we live in the south where it doesn't get all that cold.

If we weren't running the fireplace so much it would be substantially more. Right now with the fireplace it is around $400 but we were paying $700-$1000 a month before we got the fireplace. 'My house is about 4000sqfeet with some ceiling heights of 20feet
