Controversial Topics Board

That is good to know. There seems to be varying opinions on the civility. Let’s hope it works out. If people can discuss politics and stay civil that would be a first for any forum.
In another year, maybe. But I predict it will get steadily worse as the year goes on.

I think that happens over here for sure, because there's the fear of points/banning. Lots of people have done that quite regularly over here. I have too. It's not happening nearly as much on the new board. There's no need to be passive aggressive when you can just reply. I see people laughing *with* people....not nearly as much laughing *at* people.
It happens on all the boards. It happens on the cruise forum too. There was a debate about DCL changing the kids club ages and people were getting triggered. It is a passive-aggressive form of disagreeing with someone. Some people are incapable of nicely stating they disagree and why. It's got to be some kind of mental health disorder.

Most people are more like you thank you think.
I thought I could work part-time until I retired in 12 years, but I went back to work full-time 6 months ago. On a positive note, I really like my new job, but I'm working about 50 hours a week. I shouldn't even be posting right now I should be working. I've pretty much lost touch with all current events. I don't think I would have much to say on any of it or be able to form any kind of opinion.

I haven't been on this board as much in the last few months, but I'm getting excited about our weekend cruise out of San Diego next month and our Alaska cruise in May. The help I get with planning is the best thing about these boards.

I'm starting to think this is a generational thing. Millennials and gen Z are so used to reacting through emoji and memes and don't really think anything of it. Older people seem more likely to find it offensive.

You and I are very close in age and I'm well aware of when someone is using a reaction to be rude and so are the people who choose to use reactions that way. It has nothing to do with age or someone being of an age so they must be more easily offended.

It's rather obvious, but just like IRL, simply being snide rarely has the desired effect on the other party and makes one look mean. Aren't you better than that? If you've got something to say about a topic, say it. If you're just out for somebody...carry on.
I've spent enough time with unexpected breaks that I've learned that using words is dangerous. I still don't understand why those that are so offended by it don't just ignore me?

I don’t think many are offended by the use of the laughing emoji, but when people use it frequently enough, posters do notice and might think overall, those that use it to mock/ldisagree with a post, are generally not very nice people.

It probably has something to do with my mental illness.

One of the great problems in society today is that people always feel that 'taboo' topics like religion or politics should not be discussed. Following this advice is the absolute worst thing that could be done.

The reason people now cannot discuss controvercial topics is that they have never been taught how to have a meaningful conversation with a person that has a differing opinion. The loss of that ability is what is making our society crumble into screaming matches between a bunch of less than fully imformed and educated bigots.
