How long do you leave them up?

I had some tree work done this week. On the last day as he was cleaning up, he put one of those stake advertising signs out in my yard (kind of like a campaign sign, kwim?) without consulting me. I kind of thought the norm was to put them up when they start working then take it with them when they go. But who knows :confused3 ?

I'm happy with the job he did, so am fine with the sign for a little while, but how long? Do you call the contractor to come back to pick it up, or toss it in the trash?

Yeah, usually they go up right away, the moment the contract is signed, so its kinda wierd that he did it at the end. They usually stay up a few weeks after the job is done, but a fence company did two peoples yards on my block, and their signs were up for a good 6 months!!! I don't know if they got a deep discount for this or whatever, but they were up forever! I would say after 2-3 weeks if he hasn't come by to get them, give them a call.

That was pretty bold.

Personally, I would take it out now. Or at the very latest the next time you mow.

You do not "owe" it to this contractor to provide free advertisement. Trust me, (at least in our subdivision) if there is a contractor at someone's house, and someone else needs an estimate, we are not shy about talking to the contractor as he/she is cleaning up for the day, nor are we shy about asking the homeonwer who they used for such and such. THAT, IMO is the best type of advertising. No signs needed.

I would never allow it in my yard. If they want to pay me to put it up a hundred dollars a day then I would gladly do it.
I do the same thing when buying cars. I tell them they are not to put anything on the car as an ad for them.

If I was happy with his work I'd leave it up for a few days...a week at the most...then take it down or call him and see if he was coming to take it down.

We had a new roof put on about a year and a half ago and they STILL haven't come for their sign. We left it up in the yard for a week or so after they were done then took it down and left it on the grass for a while thinking they would come. It is now in our garage and will come in handy for parties, garage sales and whatnot if we want to put a sign out directing people to our house.

YEP! That is exactly how I feel why should you advertise for them for free! As you said if they want to pay me for putting it on my property fine but why should they get it free?

When they are done, I am done. I don't keep any signs in my yard. When I purchased my only new car the dealer wanted to put his plaque thing on my car. I told him no way, I don't pay that kind of money for an automobile to bolt graffiti onto it. He was annoyed but.....

It would have been down quicker than posting on here if it were mine. I love how contractors think they can put those signs up without asking :(

I would have been shouting this to him as he was leaving. IF sign is still in my yard after contractor is gone, into the trash it goes or recycle container, which ever is appropriate.

They do NOT go up to begin with for us. I am paying them for their service.

I have told them they can drop my cost by 10% if they would like to rent space in my yard to do ads

That ends the issue quick

I'm not sure about my current town, but the town I grew up in did not allow them after work was done. If they city code guys drove by and you had a sign in your yard and no obvious work was being done, you'd get a citation.

Wow, people feel pretty strongly about these.

I don’t really mind it too much- he’s a local small operator, the economy is tough (he gave me a good price so he could keep the wood to use for his personal winter heat source), and like I said, I am happy with the work.

I just didn't know what the norm was as this is the first we have encountered this. I think the grass is going to dictate how long it stays up- when I have to move it in order to mow, I can’t see myself putting it back up.

I agree, I always wonder if the contractor is discounting something for the privilege of putting up a sign. Our neighbor got new windows two weeks ago and the sign is still up. We are not even supposed to have signs in our yards in this subdivision. I would take it down myself the day they were finished (if I even let them put it up at all) and if they didn't come to get it in a week, it would go in the trash.

Whenever we buy a new car, we tell the dealership NOT to, under any circumstances, put a sticker anywhere on our car. I wouldn't buy a car that had one that wouldn't come off. Once they screwed up and let the shop put one on a car we had ordered. Luckily for them the could remove it.

It really doesn't bother me - if it's a long job, I'll let them keep it up for the duration - these are usually metal signs. It's rare that they ask - it's the norm here. If it's a day job (we had a tree removed last month), it's usually a cheapy sign, and I'll keep it up a few days. It's not hurting me, and with this economy, I don't mind helping other out.

We had a contractor put up a sign in our front yard as soon as the contract was signed. It said their company name and "dedicated to professiomalism" - yep, professionalism was not spelled right! :rotfl2:

We took it down, as our homeowners association has a rule against signs being up. We later fired the contractor for not doing the job as we requested (and paid for) it. We're now doing the work ourselves.

Right there with ya, no dealer stickers on my car either.
and no free advertising in my yard.
I would not pull it while the work is being performed, so they don't get mad.

But once they are gone, it is gone. Like I am really going to put it back in the ground after I pull it out to cut the grass...
