We purchased economy tickets and are wondering about upgrades - either free or fee. Does anyone know how this works with Continental? Is there anything we can do ahead of time or do we just have to wait until we check in?

Are you a onepass member?

I've been upgraded using my miles.

They will give free upgrades to their Gold member onepass members.

For a fee, if they had seats available you would have to have an unrestricted ticket. Otherwise you have to pay the difference in price.

This is one place that CO is really lacking IMHO.

Unless you are an elite, you have three choices.

1. Use your FF miles.
2. Pay the differerence between the ticket you bought and first class.
3. Sit in coach.

I am a onepass member but I am not elite status. Do Amex membership reward points transferred to onepass count toward elite status?

No. But you can use the miles you'll get from the to upgrade.

Do I have to have purchased a particular type of fare to be able to use miles to upgrade?

I am not positive (it's been a long time since I've flown CO) but if I recall (and this may have changed) there were two different point structures that depended on the class of fare that you bought. I know that all of the information on using miles to upgrade is on the One Pass web site.

I think I might be screwed here. I think I've found the appropriate info.

If I'm elite I can get a complimentary upgrade - I'm not
I can use miles or a series 0 upgrade (between contiguous states) if I've purchased a particular fare class - which I haven't.

I guess I'll just ask at check in if there's any way to upgrade.

Don't wait until check in, try calling the rewards number now and see if there is anything they can do for you.

I was able to upgrade on a trip to Orlando and I am sure it was a restricted fare. When I upgraded to Cancun they mentioned something about a possible fee for not having the right ticket, but turned out there was no fee.

Call and see what happens. There might not even be any upgrades left, especially if you wait until check-in.

LoraJ is right--call now to see if you can upgrade. My husband is Platinum Elite and usually gets upgraded. However, when he was "only" Gold Elite, he only got upgraded about 75% of the time. Usually, the popular destinations are harder to get upgrades.
