You can tell it's getting close when I ask questions about the flight... I am sure that when I booked the TA said the luggage limit was something crazy like 2 cases each with a crazy limit - makes a change from TCD last year when I was weighing my cases on the bathroom scales and taking bits out to keep within the limit - can anyone confirm?

Also when we last went there was limits on liquids in the hand luggage -contact lens solutions for example - is there a link to what you can and can't carry on board in your hand luggage - thanks

im sure its 2 cases at 23Kilos, and 1 hand luggage up to 18Kilos as long as it can fit safely in the overhead lockers

As above 2 x 23Kg hold baggage.

Continental hold allowance, read it carefully as it is still fee free for transatlantic flights.

Hand baggage allowance is 18Kg within a size limit of 45" in or 115 cm (L+W+H) plus

In addition to the one carry-on item, you may bring free-of-charge the below items:

one small personal article such as a briefcase, purse, day planner, small laptop computer, camera case, compact disk player or similar sized personal entertainment item
personal aid devices such as wheelchairs, braces, canes, crutches, prosthetic devices and walking sticks, provided passenger is dependent on them
one infant article such as a small collapsible stroller, a diaper bag or a government approved child seat (larger strollers can be checked in the jetway prior to boarding the aircraft)
full-size video game consoles (for example Playstation®, X-box®, or Nintendo®), full-size DVD players, and video cameras that use video cassettes (must be removed from carrying cases and submitted separately for x-ray screening)

The security restrictons are not an airline issue but an airport issue.
Restrictions for BAA airports are as follows.

Only limited quantities of liquids may be carried through security control as hand baggage.

This includes bottled drinks, suntan lotion, fragrances, cosmetics and toiletries.

The following restrictions apply to all liquids, creams, gels, pastes and aerosols taken through security control.

• Liquid items may only be carried in containers holding up to 100ml.
• They must be carried separately in a single transparent, resealable plastic bag.
• The bag must be no larger than 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in) and all items must fit inside so that it closes properly.
• At security control the bag must be placed separately on the conveyor belt for screening.
• Liquid items larger than 100ml should be packed in your hold luggage – otherwise they will be confiscated.

Exceptions may also be made for medicines. However, you may be asked to taste any liquid medicines, or to provide evidence (such as a doctor's letter) that you need them for your journey.

Edit,
Noticed you are from Man, if flying from there, the very similar rules can be found on the MAN airport site.

continental is virgin really on a code share isnt it? or am I thinking of someone else?

Thank you very much for that info - we are changing at Newark - I think that that it means that we do not have to collect our luggage at Newark and check it in again, is that right? Therefore the whole journey would constitute an 'International flight' and no baggage fees to pay - we only plan on taking one case each, which presumably they look at the 'net' weight - ie the 3 of us will have a max hold weight of 2X23kg each so I won't have to worry too much if one case is a little heavy! Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I know for health and safety anything over 23kg is classified as a two person lift and Virgin charge economy passengers if a case goes over that even if the combined weight is within limits, not sure what other airlines do. The absolute max for any piece is 32kg.

Also you clear immigration and customs at first point of entry so will probably need to collect luggage and check it back in.

If you book a direct flight with CO, then yes its a code share and Virgin plane. Indirect then no, its not Virgin.

Does anyone know if you have to pay for your baggage when checking in for your connecting flight from Newark to Orlando?

If you book as a complete flight your luggage allowance is all the way thru to your final destination.
If you book your internal flights seperate then the lower limits apply and any fees.

Hi, we are changing at Newark too.

You have to collect your luggage at Newark and re-check it as the next flight is an internal one.

Coming back, the final destination is International so your baggage will be checked through for you.

There are no fees to pay for luggage as the start and end points are in the UK.

Not sure about the joint weight of the cases, sorry.

Thanks for your help. Normally fly direct with virgin, but a bit to expensive this time. Has anyone of you flown with Continental from Bristol? Would love to hear any comments.

Cheers

This was the bit I was really unsure about. When we flew with Us Airways, we were told we had to collect our bags at Philly and recheck them in again for the internal onward flight to Orlando. We waited and waited but no bags - when we asked at the desk at Philly we were told that they had been checked through to Orlando and that there was no need to collect them. Was nervous as to whether they would actually get to Orlando as two people had told us two different things - but they did no problem.

One flight we did years ago(maybe 10) we didn't have to re-check on way to Florida. I am sure it was US airways thru Philly. Every other time have to collect and re-check. I thought I had dreamt it because no-one else has ever said theirs went all the way thru.

It can go straight through if your luggage gets a different flight to you! In 1995 I flew to Denver via NYC my luggage came off alright but my Mums' and her sisters' luggage went via Washington DC and arrived in Denver about the same time as our connecting flight arrived from NYC!

Aw don't tell us that Claire - scary thought:rotfl:

My US Airways flight Wayneg was in October 2005 - remember it well as Hurricane Wilma was on it's way.
