Contemporary vs. Bay Lake Towers

As mentioned in an earlier thread, I am looking to book the Contemporary for a stay in Jan. 2017. I am pretty sure we want to stay in the Contemporary tower rooms, but am wondering about the Bay Lake Towers. I understand it's a pretty hard get to rent points and book there, but just for curiosity's sake...what are the major differences between the two? I'm afraid even if I could get into BLT it would feel more like an apartment building. Does it feel "less" Disney? If you are just renting points and not a DVC member does it feel weird to be there? Also, why is it so hard to get in there? What makes it so desirable? Thanks!

The room types are very different. A BLT studio sleeps 4 in a queen and a double fold-out sofa. Most CR and Garden Wing rooms sleep 5 in 2 queen beds, and a sleeper sofa. A BLT studio offers a kitchenette. The overall living space in a BLT studio is less than that in a CR room. A standard CR room is 394 square feet. A studio is 339 square feet, which includes the kitchenette.

BLT has access to an exclusive pool for BLT, with a bar. If you are renting into BLT, you cannot use the Top of the World Lounge, which is for DVC members only, not for their guests (unless accompanied by the member).

You also do not receive daily Mousekeeping in BLT.

It is not necessarily difficult to get into BLT so much as it is difficult to rent into the cheapest category available at BLT, the Standard View Studio. It is difficult because there are simply not that many of them. Renting a Lake View or Theme Park View Studio, or a 1BR, is considerably easier (but much more expensive). Most people when they look to rent DVC look at the least expensive room in any resort; those are often challenging to get due to inventory.

Think of it this way: the Contemporary Resort, and by that I mean the tower itself and the garden wing, is a hotel; Bay Lake Towers, the tall building adjacent to the CR tower, is a condominium complex. You can rent a room in either, but it's best to think about what you personally expect from your accommodations while on vacation and judge accordingly. The CR tower and garden wing rooms will be regular hotel rooms or suites. That means you get a room, daily housekeeping, a mini fridge, daily replenishment of towels and toiletries, and a short elevator ride to food and shops. BLT rooms are studio condos, 1- and 2- bedroom condos, and I believe a larger 3-bedroom is available as well. That means you get a full kitchen, weekly housekeeping, replenishment of towels every few days, and an elevator ride plus a walk across the skybridge to shops and food. They're two different categories. Do you want to cook meals and stock groceries on vacation? Do you want to clean up after yourself on vacation? Do you want it to feel more like home or an apartment while you're at Disney World? Then BLT is a good option. Do you not want to fool with cooking? Do you want your beds made and bathroom cleaned while you're at the park each day? Do you want a traditional hotel experience? Go with the CR.

I say this cause I see a lot of folks on Disboards who classify the DVC resorts as basically a more affordable Deluxe resort option, and that's simply not the case. Renting DVC points gets you a condo, not a hotel room. I personally couldn't consider buying or renting DVC for that reason (I refuse to cook on vacation and I definitely am not cleaning or making beds either -- that's what I'm paying for!), but for others who don't mind those things and want more space it sometimes makes sense for them. While the advantages and disadvantages to the DVC condos differ depending on the resort you choose, the CR tower and garden wing rooms are quite spacious, so you wouldn't be losing anything by staying at the hotel itself as opposed to BLT. That's apparently not the case at other resorts. BLT feels very apartment-ish to me, to be honest, so you might feel the same way.

Thank you sooo much! I definitely want the hotel feel. (I want my bed made! Don't want to cook! I'm on vacation!!!) I was worried about it feeling like a condo and you confirmed this. Thank you.
I think if I was planning to spend a longer time than just 3 nights, or with a bigger group, I definitely think the DVC thing would make sense. But for this short special trip, I will stick with Contemporary tower rooms.

Note that a studio does NOT get a full kitchen. Kitchenettes only in the studios, which include a microwave and toaster, but nothing like a stove. (Putting this here in case someone falls into this post later.)

We have stayed at the Contemporary several times and once in a 1 bedroom Bay Lake villa (lakeside view) in December 2014. We rented points in January for the following December and just before prices for booking at the 11 month time period went up. As much as we loved the 1 bdr BLT it would be prohibitively expensive to just book through Disney.com. I didn't miss any Disney feeling for a second because it was such a treat to have all that space to relax in and super convenient to the MK. Having traveled to WDW so many times in the past we no longer need a "theme fix" to get our Disney!

You cannot beat either location for convenience, available restaurants and modern style. I too, was worried about the hotel feel especially at BLT but I would stay again at either without hesitation. If you are staying longer than a few days I highly recommend a 1 bedroom at BLT for the 2 bathrooms and washer/dryer. I would not stay in a studio unless it was just the two of us and for only a few days; they are too cramped and have only the 1 bath and no washer/dryer.

The Contemporary rooms are extremely spacious and quiet and we absolutely loved the huge balconies, views of the MK plus discount deals were easier to come than for BLT. Just having the monorail running below you and views of the MK make the Contemporary Disney enough for us.

So for me the decision is based on how many people, how long a stay and best prices.

Good luck in your decision!

I would add in that what type of touring you plan as well. If I was rope drop until park close every night, I wouldn't want to spend the money for BLT. However, a more relaxed vacation with leisurely mornings, fewer park days, more time in the room, the upgrade to a more "home like feel" might be part of the equation.

I would go with CR and a regular room, more space then a studio and with the BLT 1 bedroom, the price really jumps up plus you STILL only get one real bed:(

BLT is a timeshare. Members who own there pay all the costs for the operation of the timeshare. Therefore, every thing they get is paid gorgeous with their annual fees. Disney just can't raise the rate like they do with the hotels.

Love the 1 bedroom at BLT. One of our favorite places in all of Disney to stay.

What can make it desirable for non-members is in the 1 BR and larger you get a full kitchen and laundry in the room plus a living room area. If you pay cash you still get daily mousekeeping. If you rent points from an owner you can save a lot of $ on the res and you can pay for any extra mousekeeping you require.

I am by no means an expert as I have only been on property once last year but we did stay in BLT. We had a 1 bedroom and it was quite large and convenient to MK but other than that, it was an extremely disappointing experience. The pool area was having renovations done and being as I had not discovered this board nor did any of the staff seem to be able to answer our questions, we just didn't get to enjoy any of the resort ameneties. The room itself was dated and dingy - stains on the carpet, worn furniture, etc. Considering the price per night and my generally amazing experiences with Disney (we had just gotten off a cruise), I was absolutely shocked. I would never ever recommend anyone stay there.

We are returning this year to the GF and I'm really hoping I have a totally different experience.
