Contact lens question

So I've been wearing contacts since I'm 13 (1983 for the record), so I'm not a new lens wearer by any means!

Up til yesterday, I had one pair of soft contact that I wore for a year and then got new. Extremely comfortable, never had to think about them at all.

So yesterday I got my exam and the doc tells me that those are no longer cost-effective. Now the norm is to buy the disposable kind. So I thought, whatever, that makes more sense anyway, to have extras on hand.

Only as I'm popping in my first "trial" pair does he mention that they might be "slightly uncomfortable" for a little bit because it's a different material. Slightly uncomfortable??? I want to rip my eyeballs out. I'm forcing myself to wear them because maybe he's right; maybe I just have to get used to them. But if you've ever had uncomfortable contacts you know how miserable it can be. I was (not kidding) running into walls yesterday because I was so busy blinking. My eyes are red like I've been crying.

So how long do you let something like this go on before you give up? Has anyone else had a problem making a similar switch?

Have you tried "flipping" the contact? Maybe you have it in backwards. It does not sound normal to me to be in that much discomfort.

Thanks, yea I did. I also tried switching the right and left, thinking I had that wrong.

I have periods of time where they feel fine (like right now) and then..."arrrggghh!"

I'm gonna start saving for for lasik, I swear.

Disposable contacts are not as form-fitting as the old yearly wear ones were. I had a similar problem w/ mine only my issue was that they didn't stay put on my eye. Kept moving around. Drove me nuts.

It took me a while to find a pair that worked well for me. Not sure what your requirements are but know that there are more choices when it comes to disposables. (unless you have a astigmatism or other specific issue. Then unfortunately, there aren't as many choices) Go back to the doc and ask to try different brands. There is a difference and you have to find the one that works for you. They should be able to give you samples. You will still have to get used to the new kind, but it shouldn't be that bad.

If they are irritating that much you are either allergic to the material they are made of or solution you used, they are in wrong, or he gave you the wrong size/prescription/chose a brand that is incompatible for your eye. It might be prudent to go back and have him take a look and have it fixed. It should never require such a long adjustment period. I switched to disposables myslef a few years ago BECAUSE they were more comfy than the ones I kept for a year.

i have been wearing the first acvue brand for a while.. i get a new exam, he puts me in the new acuvue oasyis. nope.. didn't work out.. i went with the slightly older brand.. acuvue advance. this is better.. but i like the first brand better. i think they still carry the conventional cl (one that you don't throw away).

different brand will have different material or different thickness or the curviture is slightly different and the diameter.. all this factors can contrubute to the discomfort.

if you have been wearing it for a few days now.. if it's still uncomfortable, then that cl is not for you. it doesn't take a whole week to get used to a new cl... especially if you've been wearing cl since you were little.

the cl might be defective, maybe there's a rip..

Hey, you've all given me some helpful info. I just want to clarify that I'm still in my first 24 hours. And actually I gave up on them last night around 6pm. So I guess it's still early (?)

Don't wear them if they're irritating your eyes like that. It shouldn't happen. Call your doctor about it and ask to be fitted for another pair. I prefer my disposables to the year-round contacts because they're thinner and I feel them in my eyes less easily. My fresh pairs always feel fine. And, I have plenty on hand in case of rips.

Did you try a sample on in the office first or at home? My eye doctor always has me try on anything new in the office, then looks at my eye to see if they fit. It's especially important for me because I wear toric lenses for astigmatism.

I didn't have that much trouble when I switched from the regular kind to the disposable. Sounds like you tried everything, I think you need to go back to the doc & try something else. I really don't remember having that much trouble when I switched.

give it another day or two.. if it's still not settling in your eyes.. then there's something wrong. you're a cl vet, it shouldn't take long to get used to the new cl.. however, some certain cl just doesn't work for certain patients.

it took 3 tries for my dr to get it right. i would call other places to see if they still carry your brand that you've been wearing.. if they do, then it's not absolete. your dr's office may be able to special order them, or something comprable to it.

PS.. if it's very uncomfortable and hurting you, just take it out.
