conspiracy theories

My family is talking about this video... and I am staying far far away from it. I know they won't listen to anything I share against it (at least some of them).

I hear you, I see some people sharing Plandemic, and anyone’s comments about how it’s full of falsehoods, just falls on deaf ears. It’s like they’ve already made up their minds, because Plandemic tells them what they WANT to hear

I was just going to post this. Very good article.

The problem is that when you present facts that refute the conspiracy, most will double down and just become more entrenched. Or they find more of their alternate facts to refute the actual facts.

I understand that the flat earthers think the earth is a disc that is continuously accelerating upward - which explains the force of gravity we feel.

This article is excellent in relation to Plandemic and what to say to the ones who are sharing it or believing it https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.fo...-push-back-on-plandemic-and-how-to-do-it/amp/
The article talks about scientists and others who give their opinion on topics outside their particular area of expertise. I bluntly told my friend to stop listening to Dr. Oz for this very reason. He is not an infectious disease expert. He makes these statements to get ratings. But they (people in general who buy into these things) don't want to get their info from John's Hopkins, etc. because its not entertaining.

Oh what about that Malaysian air flight ... was it 370 ... that disappeared. Lots of conspiracies around that. I'm still not sure if they really know what happened. I was pretty interested in that story as it was unfolding.

That one has been pretty much written off as the pilot committing a mass murder suicide. Plenty of evidence points in that direction. It's almost indisputable at this point.

Maybe so but where did the plane go? Regardless of whythere still remains the question of how does one make a whole plane go poof where satellite can't find it like some 1980's David Copperfield special... doesn't compute

I blame all this on the demise of the word problem in math classes! (Just kidding.) Seriously, though; the Socratic method has a lot of downsides, but it does teach logic skills. I've been a librarian for a LONG time, and I can tell you that IME, the average college student's ability to assess the quality of information sources through logical reasoning has declined a LOT over the course of the last few decades. Most are not being taught logic in language-based classes, only in STEM fields, and they are failing to extrapolate. From what I can see, it is not that they are incapable of extrapolating that skill; it is just that it does not occur to them to do so. They have gotten lazy about it: it's easier to just accept the most accessible answer if it is not something that you care deeply about the accuracy of.

In the library world, we have a question that is analogous to the old saw about a tree falling in a deserted forest. We like to say, "If you can't find it using Google, is it really important?" The answer, of course, is YES. Google is effective, but it still has a lot of limitations and deliberate biases because it makes money through marketing. The mere existence of Google Scholar says a whole lot about Google in general. (If a standard Google search delivers authoritative information, why would Google Scholar need to exist?)

It went down in the Indian Ocean. They already know that. It will likely never be found because the potential impact radius is HUGE. Once you are over the ocean, tracking becomes intermittent. That fact should be unsettling to anyone who flies over an ocean. There are large amounts of time where NO ONE knows the exact position of the plane.

Airliners rely almost completely on radar. It's kind of incredible when you realize how archaic the system is:

Can't planes be tracked with GPS?
Yes, but while GPS (Global Positioning System) is a staple of modern life, the world's air traffic control network is still almost entirely radar-based.

Aircraft use GPS to show pilots their position on a map, but this data is not usually shared with air traffic control.

Some of the most modern aircraft are able to "uplink" GPS data to satellite tracking services, but handling large volumes of flight data is expensive and such systems are usually only used in remote areas with no radar coverage.

The satellite data which suggests flight MH370 flew on for several hours are basic 'pings' sent by the plane, and so far only help to identify two very approximate flight corridors north and south.

Over the next decade, a new system called ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast) is expected to replace radar as the primary surveillance method for air traffic control

ADS-B will see aircraft work out their position using GPS and then relay data to the ground and other planes.

But, as with existing secondary radar, ADS-B coverage does not extend over the oceans.

ADS-B is already used by flight-tracking websites, but the Malaysian aircraft disappeared from these at the same time it vanished from air traffic control screens.

That's exactly what it is. They WANT to reinforce their own belief that this pandemic cannot in any way be natural, but instead a product of "the enemy." It is extremely easy to find an echo chamber on the internet.

Flight systems are mind blowing. My dad was a retired commercial airline pilot and I wish I would have learned more about it all before he passed 2 years ago.

I believe it wasn't until the last year or so that satellite plan tracking really became mainstream, which obviously does not help the lost Malaysian flight.

Today my FB feed has “pledges” not to get a Covid vaccination because they don’t want a “chip” implanted in their bodies. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m not an expert on spy chip implantation but I’d have to guess it would be too large to fit through a needle. Besides, if you watch Days you know you need Dr. Rolf to do it and it needs to go near the back of your head. 😉

Have they asked David Copperfield?

We have weirdos on the earth with us watching each other endlessly - we are a country watching our front doors 24/7 and pet cat/dog cams are a big thing and yet no-one is watching planes on satellite, if this is true then the whole thing makes even less sense.

Probably true. I get that some people are suicidal. What I don't understand is why they would want to kill hundreds of other people as well.

Noah's Ark. There are many people who believe that story and will go to great lengths to 'prove' it. It may be true allegorically, metaphorically, and spiritually, but not in any literal sense.

Don't you mean pilot AND co-pilot?

Well suicidal people aren’t exactly rational thinkers. Think about the ones who step in front of trains. They’re not thinking how that will affect the people on the train. They just want it to be over.
