Considering DVC Purchase - Other resorts?

I'm considering a purchase of DVC from someone who already owns points. One of the things I was trying to get more information about was the places other than the Disney properties. I know about Hilton Head and Vero Beach and all the properties at WDW, but I know you can also use the points toward other places that are not Disney properties. The information at the Disney-owned website for DVC is very sketchy. I ordered the free videotape (still awaiting its arrival), but so far I have not been able to find any websites with information about using this option. For instance, is there a fee, and what properties are currently participating, and roughly what the point usage requirements would be. Any suggestions where I could find more details? Thanks, SAR

Hi SAR, welcome to the DIS  . The DVC video does give you some info on the member get-aways that are offered. I'm sure you can request to see a complete list of the resorts, although they are subject to change over time. Yes there is a fee. Most people don't feel that it is the best use of points. We own another T/S that we trade through RCI. It is much less pricey. We use DVC to go to WDW. Works great for us. Some folks on this forum do trade out, I'm sure you will get more responses. HTH. You have found a great place to ask questions :D Lacee

I've been lurking here for about 2 days, and all the DIS boards are phenomenal! Thanks for the really speedy response, Lacee. I am starting to get the feeling that trading out is not that good of a value ... but my mileage may vary, as they say. Could be there are some nearby places to where I live that make it a good deal. One other thing I just ran across by accident is that if I buy the points from a current member that Disney actually has the right of first refusal, and I might not get them! Can anyone provide more insight to that? This would be a sale/purchase with other members of my family - so I'd really hate to have it end up that none of us have it because Disney exercised their right to buy!

Thx, Scott

Me again! We bought our first contract, 160 BCV points, from Disney. Then we bought a resale, 250 VWL points, from the TSS. All contracts must be reviewed by Disney for ROFR. It keeps the price up, so it is good for owners. Our VWL contract went right through, 75$ a point I think it was. So, you will not be able to buy at rock bottom prices. Check the DVC community board, there is a ROFR thread right now. Then you can see what Disney is letting get through. We bought out VWL points last October BTW. Good luck with your decision.

Disney is using ROFR more and more lately. We made an offer of $75 a point for a resale at VWL a few weeks ago and lost it to Disney and ROFR. We were very surprised, and so was the resale agent we went through. A month ago Disney was not interested at that price, so you never know what Disney will buy. I agree that it would be terrible if you wanted to keep it in the family and Disney buys it out from under you, but it can happen.

If you do purchase the resale you might want to check out the for rent board. I've been checking these boards out for a few weeks as I am thinking of purchasing a DVC as well but I want to rent first. I've noticed that the point rent out rather quickly.

Good luck!

Buy DVC points to use at the DVC resorts. To use them for other things just doesn't make sense in most situations.
