We currenty have 300 pts at AKV. We would like to add more points. Our current use year is March. Should be buy at the same resort? Should we buy in the same use year? What are the advantages and disadvantages of which way we do this? Please help us understand so we don't make a $25k mistake.

Should be buy at the same resort?

depends.

on one hand, if you buy 25 pts at BLT (or wherever), they can only be used to book BLT at 11 months. you can't mix them with your AKV pts until the 7 month window. each resort's points are only good at THAT resort at the 11 month window.

but if you really want to book a BLT MK view vacation every other year, then a BLT contract can give you some pts to use for that specific booking at 11 months out every other year with banking and borrowing.

Should we buy in the same use year?

it's a lot easier. it's also easier to combine pts from both contracts to use for a single nights stay.

but if you travel at all times of the year, then a UY of october will give you more options. if you decide to travel in jan or feb, your current UY will be riskier if you have to cancel at the last minute. if you use your october UY pts for a feb reservation and have to cancel in december, you will still be within your banking window for that contract...but you would risk losing those pts with a march UY.

ask more questions if i'm unclear...

Buying new or an add on, the answers are pretty much the same.

Buy where you love to stay and buy a UY that best fits your favorite vacation months.

We have 3 March use year contracts, which work great for our annual trips in May and September. We recently discovered that a March use year doesn't work so well for Thanksgiving and Christmas trips (past the banking window). We are adding on again, thru resale, and trying for a September use year with the new contract. It will be more work keeping track of different use years, but will be a better use of our points going forward for winter trips. I have had no issues keeping track of 3 contracts with the same use year, if you decide to continue with your March use year. We bought all of our contracts thru resale, and got great deals on all of them. It takes longer than buying thru Disney, but can really help you save money.
