Conservative Thread: We cannot do everything at once, but we can do something at once

Before heading to bed, I just wanted to brag on my kids a little. :)

As we came out of swimming lessons at the Y last night, they noticed the Giving Tree set up in the lobby. They love Christmas trees so we stopped to admire it, and as they looked at the paper ornaments (with the childrens' particulars on them) they asked if they could help some kids. They searched the tree until they each found a child the same age and sex as themselves, and then we headed straight over to Target to shop. The ornament listed each child's special toy wish and clothing size, and asked for one toy and one clothing item. The kids were excited about finding exactly the toy their child wanted, and picking an outfit for them. We also raided the dollar section for a stocking hat and matching gloves for each. For $2 how can you go wrong? I figure they may not need them, but I'd rather know a child had too many gloves and hats than not enough right? Besides, if they are anything like my kids they will come home with only one glove at least once this winter.

Anyhow, I was just proud of my kids that they wanted to help, and it was a really warm fuzzy feeling watching them choose things they really liked themselves, for someone else. My son's "buddy" wanted legos, and my son insisted that we get the extra large super mega tub of them just like he has. I was kinda tending toward the smaller tub myself but he wasn't having any of that. Well...he was right wasn't he? It could be the only toy this child will get this year, we better do it right.

Tomorrow is swimming again, and we will deliver our gifts back to the Y. :santa:

:thumbsup2 :wizard:

Morning all!
(really just posting to check out my count down ticker. This trip has been two years in the making and is now down to 17 days! :yay: )

Yep, but only graduate school though (so, the obligatory Aggie jokes only half-apply).

:sad2:

Oh, goody, another "Christians are crazy" thread just popped up on the CB. Can't you just feel the seasonal love?

I never found it, but I'm sure it was a fun thread. popcorn::

what i DO find offensive is idiots going around trying to take away the pretty tree and the candelabra because it DOESN'T mean anything to THEM. it's just like the t.v., or radio, or this thread: if you don't like it, instead of trying to destroy it, just move on...

::yes:: Agreed.

I totally don't get the Christmas tree removal at UNC libraries. The Christmas tree isn't a Christian religious symbol. :confused3 I think it's a matter of some people not being happy unless they can take away everyone's little happiness.

It isn't but people who aren't Christians incorrectly associate it with Christianity.

It's very difficult for me to wrap my mind around the logic of people who truly claim to be offended by a tree or any other religious symbol. I'm not offended by Menorahs. I'm not offended by Buddha statues. Not offended by anything of the Muslim faith, or any symbol of any other faith out there. I'm secure enough in my own beliefs, that I am not going to get my nose bent out of joint when I see something representing another faith.

I 100% agree with you. The people who fight this stuff are insecure in their own beliefs.

so, unless thse honor code pledgers were vampires, how could a cross possibly be a problem?

:lmao: OK. That cracked me up. Maybe because my boss has me reading Twilight right now so all of my current thoughts are about vampires anyways.

there was a jewish family in our neighborhood when i was little. they loved Christmas trees. but there ya go...they were jewish. so every year, they decorated their "hannukah bush". :rotfl2:

I love it! :lmao:

i'm practically pagan, so maybe that's why i like Christmas trees so much (two seven foot trees, three four foot trees, a little kitchen tree, and one in each bedroom, tiny ones in each bathroom). and i love the two creches i have inherited (one of which was hand made stunningly by my mother), but they are magnificent works of art...in no way are they offensive to me, and i am proud to display them at Christmas time.

people who want to destroy things they don't believe in must be either envious or evil.

...or stupid

He he. Done.

Debbieandroo- Great job on the brownies! They look so yummy.

Love the new avatar. :thumbsup2

And here's the recipe as promised -- it's not chicken, er, egg salad but I like it!

http://www.hersheys.com/recipes/recipes/detail.asp?id=3511#

:thumbsup2 Thanks!

My good friend makes chicken salad with grapes - she's the first person I ever knew to do it. I confess now, that grapeless chicken salad doesn't really taste that good to me! I love that sweet/savory combo.

And now I have your recipe to try - thanks, Breezy!

:thumbsup2 You're welcome!

Yep, but only graduate school though (so, the obligatory Aggie jokes only half-apply).

Undergrad was at LMU (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München)- US Army.....long story.....

Hope things have been well with you (I hear Army food has dramatically improved over the years).

:)
Hey Aggie!;) Started Freshman year down here. Maybe it is because I am still fresh behind the ears, but really, I think there are other schools that are more deserving of the hick stereotype, at least nowadays. Especially since both Grad and undergrad are among some of the top in the nation for many programs.

Did you hear the cheers from the crowd when President Bush walked onto the field at the start of the Army/Navy game just now? It was so touching, and brought a tear to my eye. I'm sure going to miss him. When asked what he's going to miss most about being President, he said he'd miss many things, but most of all being CIC of such fine, brave men and woman who are willing to serve our country in times of danger.:goodvibes :sad1:

Good job Michelle - it feels good when your kids do the right thing without prompting. You know you're doing a great job!

We got about 6 inches of snow overnight - it's beautiful! Of course, it's freezing too, but that's okay. It's Victorian Sleighbell weekend here in my town and we have a bunch of family up. We'll be going to craft shows, the festival of trees, probably the museum, go shopping downtown and then go to the Christmas parade tonight. The parade is all Victorian themed and all of the floats/displays are pulled by horses. It's very nice.

Unfortunately, it's supposed to be FREEZING tonight. My DD is marching in the band tonight - I feel bad for her little fingers! I don't really want to go, but once I'm there I'll be glad I did. The stores on the parade route offer cookies and hot cocoa. My kids love it.

Hope you all have a great day today.

I'd LOVE to see some pictures of all these trees :) I love to see how others decorate theirs....and you have so many you could do a different theme for each room....though what theme you might use for a tree in the bathroom I have no idea:lmao:

weird that i have done this for six years now without a photo...don't know why exactly.

i started getting more trees because i had more ornaments than i thought. lots of alice ornaments, naturally, which started on a 4' tree and end up living on the 7' tree now. the 4' trees end up being themed (bears, kitchen) and the tall ones are hand made ornaments on one vs. pretty ball ornaments on the other. bedrooms get the small kitschy "metallic" looking ones that my family hates. bathroom trees are tiny...either tree candles, sparkly cones that resemble trees, or, the one i love best is a tiny little thing from the dollar tree which i decorated with teeny tiny ornaments (about3/4") and seed lights. i'll do photos this year.

Gig 'em! I enjoy the humor a lot......it makes it that much more satisfying when my direct reports are for the most part UT, Tech or Ivy League grads...... hehehe

I love this school and the traditions. I wish I could have attended when I was younger...... missed out on a lot of fun........ guess this makes me a 2 percenter, but not by choice.

Regardless, every April 21st, I know where I will be......surrounded by Aggie brothers and sisters! Best Muster yet? Singapore, definitely!!

Regarding our football performance lately....... just remember, Aggies never lose.......we just run out of time. :thumbsup2

Good job for such an uncaring, unfeeling Conservative Christian. :thumbsup2
Seriously, though, your kids sound wonderful.

wonderlanne, I'd love to see your trees, too.

I checked underneath my cabinet and I seem to be out of anti-stupid-spray. We'll just have to make sure the door is securely locked. ;)

I'm not offended by other peoples' religions or their religious paraphernalia. I would never require that they remove them for my sake. It's their religion and they have the right to practice however they want.
I went with my friend (who is an AmerIndian Shaman) to a sweat once. When you pray inside the sweat, you end it with "All my relations". I simply asked her if I could modify mine and she said sure. Not one person was offended by anyone elses' prayers or the way they ended it.

We've got the Dicken's Festival covered down here! Another Victorian celebration. It won't stop snowing! I think I might walk into downtown and go grab some honey roasted almonds. I swear I can smell them from my living room! Its cold out, but its the perfect backdrop for seeing the town all decked out and the people all "Dickonsized".

Zip, I think it's a power thing. They can have it removed so they did. Pure and simple.

I still think it odd, but the "inclusive" bunch is actually more into "exclusion".

Most would be glad you came at all! I really love it down here and this is coming from a kid who thought the traditions were idiotic! Sadly I won't be in aggieland for muster because I am doing the Disney college program next semester! I will talk to the other aggies that are going down so we can get together that day. And while we may have ran out of time more than I would have liked, I still had more fun at those games than any longhorn, sooner, or raider!

What I really don't understand is how they don't see themselves as such. I have learned so much from ethnic/religious/family groups different than my own. Why do "they" seem to hate, rather than embrace our differences?

What happens this time of year — every year — is quite simply anti-Christian bigotry. The people who object to such symbols would never, ever object to Jewish or Muslim or Hindu or any other religious symbols, only Christian symbols. They associate Christianity with Conservatism, so it — like Conservatism — must be demonized and destroyed.

And I say this not being a particularly religious person. I just know what bigotry looks like when I see it, and anti-Christian bigotry is one of the last places intolerant bigots can get away with it. It'll get far worse before it gets better.

I just got back in from Dickens on the Strand in Galveston. It's great that they were able to put on the festival with the Island still recovering from Ike. No holding out their hands for their "bennies" and free debit cards, just lot of hard work and determination.

I got there when the festival opened and thought it was going to be a poor showing, but by 11:00 the crowds started to pour in and everyone seemed to be having a great time. The food smells drove me crazy :goodvibes
