Off and Running: Opportunity of a Lifetime

By Sam Webb

Of course, change won’t be easy. The pressures to weaken, even mothball, progressive, anti-corporate measures will come from many quarters.

That said, the opportunities for working class and people's gains are extraordinary. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Starring us in the face are some immediate challenges.

First, we have to support the passage of the President's stimulus bill in the Senate.

Second, we have to bloc any Republican efforts to derail the nomination of Hilda Solis, the nominee for the Secretary of Labor. This is the first round in the battle to pass the EFCA. Some may think this is a struggle of only the labor movement. But nothing could be further from the truth. A bigger labor movement in this country would strengthen the struggle on every front. No one expressed this point better than Martin Luther King toward the end of his life.

Third, we have to join others in resisting evictions and foreclosures – not to mention cutbacks and layoffs at the state and city level.

Fourth, the wars of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan have to be brought to a close. As former President Lyndon Johnson realized too late, wars of occupation (in this case Vietnam) can quickly ruin a presidency that has great promise.

Well, you probably have other and probably better ideas.

In any case, we have our work cut out for us. But I think we can confidently say that change is coming. And we will build a more perfect union.

Yes We Can!

:scared1: Both that he said it and that people either don't see it or just don't care.

Finally found you all on page 2! Thought maybe all y'all had gotten yourselves and the entire thread banned!:rotfl: ;)

Ahh...another week...don't have the energy for the CB - you all keep me informed. Plus you're all cuter and have better senses of humor.:cutie:

Hi all, happy Monday. I scanned a few posts but no real time to read. That being said:

You know, after seeing the USS Ronald Reagan, and I know there's a USS George H.W. Bush, does anyone know if president Carter or Clinton has had any military hardware named after them?
What would their mottos be?
USS Ronald Reagan = Peace through Strength
USS William Clinton = Don't ask don't tell

So there really is a USS Carter and a USS Clinton? Interesting.
The fact that Carter has a nuclear attack submarine named after him is not devoid of humor, that's for sure. Part of me is surprised he didn't demand they not name it after him, considering his "We should just roll over and take it" attitude he hastowards our and Israel's enemies.

I dread the day they build something with Clinton's name attached to it, and just hope the contract is given to a yard other than the one my dad works for. I don't think he could take building that! :rotfl:

He'd better be off the air by the time Jack Bauer comes on!!!
I am not pleased about The Bachelor being bumped back an hour for this. Maybe they'll mix the two shows and Jason will give Obama a :flower3: . :rotfl:

Can somebody tell me when Obama got his own tv show. I mean, the man is on the tube ALMOST EVERYDAY...and during prime time! I am sick of him. I can't decide what mental issues he has...but,I believe them to be numerous. Would somebody get him off the screen?

My MIL is a life long dem. She USED to love Obama. Now, she doesn't even like him that much. She was telling me what he is TRYING to do but, she doesn't believe it will work. She thinks they are spending too much money and should leave things alone!! :rotfl: I've tried to tell her...very gently....that the democratic party has changed. She thinks she's a lib but is a moderate that leans conservative.

Can we survive this nightmare?

Can we survive this nightmare?
Hopefully.

The man is naive, at best. I'm listening to it while I'm on the computer, and when he talks about Iran, he comes across as a flippin' moron. Part of me expects him to come out and say one day "If we just sit down and have tea with them, they'll like us!" Make it clear to Iran they can't support terrorists... Iran is a terrorist regime! Honestly, how stupid must one be to not comprehend that fact? :sad2: And he's lying through his teeth about this "stimulus" bill, too.

It's funny though to listen to the multitude of "uhs," "umms," and the increasingly squeaky voice as he gets more and more po'd. Not so fun getting asked slightly tough questions, eh Bucko? :lmao:

Hint, if you have to "sell" the spendulous package on national tv.....it's probably not a good sign :rotfl: :guilty:

um, uh, uh, um uh.........

Everytime I hear "infrastucture" - I actually hear, "payoff" I'm sure he's got quite a few folks to payoff, er um...."thank" for their support :rolleyes1

Let them pass the piece of doo doo without the republicans.....what's so hard about that?

How much do you want to bet that the popular approval for this thing actually drops after he talks? :lmao:

Um, did he just say that the banks may need MORE money??????

Does anyone else think of James T. Kirk when LTEC Hussein talks. He. talks. so. haltingly. spock. I. don't. know if. I. can. standit.

:lmao: Blaaaahhhhh.

Um, did he just say that the banks may need MORE money??????

Yup, and "who knows how much more" they may need.

I said right when this started that when they were stupid enough to pass the original bailout bill, it'd be a never ending mess. But do the clowns in D.C. listen? Of course not! Because they're the "smart" people! :rolleyes1

Idiots. Republicans and Democrats. The vast majority of all of them are nothing but power hungry idiots. :sad2:

So I am watching this yawn fest and have one thought.....Can he even answer a darn question?
:confused3

I swear you could ask him any question, no matter what.

His twenty minute answer would be something like this:

Platitude, platitude..........blah blah blah........talk down to you........trivial falsehood..........trivial falsehood...........smirk.........um...um......lie...lie....blah blah blah.........failed policies of the last eight years........Republicans bad......platitude......i am so briliant.......I won I won nana-nana-boo-boo.......harrumph...harrumph... I am the smartest in the room.....um...um....deep thought...deep thought.....hail Caesar......I can do no wrong......blah...blah....blah......Yes We Can!

:snooty:

Since he won't take a followup question, I guess we will never hear the reporter ask him:

"What the hell are you talking about?"

:confused3

He can't even answer the A-Rod question without any "uhhhhhhhs" and any sense. Baseball is my thing, and he's standing there saying he's "glad MLB is finally taking it seriously." They aren't taking it seriously! Their whole MO is to sweep it all under the rug. If you looked up the phrase "head in the sand," you'd see a picture of the useless wonder known as Commissioner Bud Selig. The Union is corrupt and dirty as all get out, and they have done everything they can to allow players to get away with this and to keep it going. The lip service from both says it's being taken seriously, but no, it is not. Not IMO. That's why I'm glad Congress started getting involved a few years back because nothing was happening otherwise. You talk about dirty dealings in Unions, look no further than the MLBPA and you will find quite possibly the most corrupt and disgusting union in the country. :sad2:

Now here comes Helen Thomas with her "so-called terrorists" comments. That woman was supposed to retire almost 9 years ago. So much for that! :rotfl:

I don't even watch him. I don't um..ur..a..understand "Obama speak". I wish somebody would yank him off the stage with a Shepherd's Crook.

That mean-spirited old harpy was sleeping during one of those Gibbs gab-fests last week. My DH was home for lunch and said, "Old Helen is drooling!" Yep, she was asleep. :rotfl:

I take it our leader is back on the TV? If they would add BHO to the cable network and pay for it in the spending bill and not allow him to speak on ANY other channel the spendfest would be worth it. I'd personally send a check if they would write in that his name couldn't be even said on any other channel. :happytv:

I think he would go on speaking until he lost his voice. Of course everyone in the room would have lost their minds by then.

It is painful having to even look at that old liberal hag. I do feel sorry for Obama in that he has to look at her sitting right down in the front row. Maybe that is why he says um a lot?
