Consequences for fighting on the bus?

Any fights at the school dd attends now and the one she attended last year gets an immediate call to the police. The school will press charges if need be. Sometimes the kids are suspended out of school, sometimes in school. After so many instances, the student is sent to alternative school.

OTOH, my sons got into fights at school (before the whole police calling thing). I would not have pressed charges against the other kid. Kids fight, it happens.

Also, if other kids get involved it can lead to punishment for them. So, it may depend on the school's view of the girls involvement in the original argument.

DD was not involved but witnessed the assault. Neighbor's boy, a 7th grader was in a verbal argument with another boy on the bus. 2 high school girls tried to intervene to de-escalate the argument. Neighbor's boy hit first girl in the face (closd fist punch), then hit the 2nd girl in the face and in the stomach. The first girl ran off the bus screeming, "call the police!"

The principles, vice principles for 2 schools (the 2 that share the bus) and a guidance counselor came to the bus, removed the boy and the bus left to take the remaining students home.

This happened on Friday. This morning, neighbor's boy is at the bus stop and in school. I saw him running the streets over the weekend and couldn't believe his mother let him have any freedom (I shouldn't really be surprised based on passed experiences). But...parenting aside, what about the school, or law enforcement? Why is this kid at school today. At minimum I would think he would be off the bus.

In your experience, how does the school handle physical assault?

We are waiting for this kid to finally be dealt with, it can't come too soon in my opinion.

Here, depending on the actual severity of things, he'd definitely be off the bus and most likely suspended and possibly recommended for expulsion. The police could also take action.

This kid's mom is doing him a disservice by,not holding him accountable. She blamed you for the fire he started? I am sure she is blaming the girls for ramming their bodies into his fist.

What are the girl's parents doing?

Forget about school, bus, school district policy - I don't know anyplace in the US that it is legal to punch someone in the face.

I'd be pressing assault charges and raising a big stink.

This kid needs more than a few days suspension. For serious bodily assault he really need to go to juvie. This was not a 5 year old.

I had a stepson very much like that but at a younger age even. guess what he got worse and worse (he was not my stepson back then). He ended up a horrible criminal who died early.

They are not doing the boy any favors either. He'll be dead before he's 25 if he keeps up this behavior.

In our school district, an Iep could keep them from suspending him. Depending on his disability, his total days out of school in one year might be 10. That's how our large school district handles it and my guess is that's it's state mandated. Also, could be that the bus driver and students involved had not been interviewed yet and that consequences would still be coming. As a bus driver, I would have written up the incident and faxed it to the school as soon as I returned to the compound but on a Friday night...principals, teachers, security officers all go home quickly.

Yep. IEP trumps normal consequences. Makes it really difficult to discipline these students. If a behavior is a part of their problem then the IEP should have a discipline plan and that has to be used in lieu of suspension.

I would have thought he would have been kicked off the bus, permanently. That's what would happen in our district, I think.

Of course, there was a kid running around our school poking his classmates with a hypodermic syringe, and he's still in school too (although he was suspended for three days). I was shocked. Shocked it happened, and even more surprised that he was allowed back.
