So I am very new at this. Going for a week in December and very excited.

What is this after hours event that everyone is talking about? I see where there is a cost involved. I thought if you stayed on property that you could stay for the "extra hours" as part of your package price?

There are certain days that Disney hotel guests can stay later at one of the four parks. It is not every night for every park. On a few of the nights that Magic Kingdom is not open late to Disney Hotel guests, they are offering a package for anyone even if they aren't staying at a Disney Hotel to purchase extra hours in Magic Kingdom.

PM Extra Magic Hours: Free to WDW Resort Guests (2 hours in length, beginning at regular park closing time.)

PM EMH happens for MK, Epcot, DHS at the rate of approx. one per week all year long.
(PM EMH used to happen at DAK. It might be coming to DAK again. Stay tuned.)

So they still offer the extra hours for resort guests at no additional charge?

Yup.

And, there are also AM Extra Magic Hours, (1 hour long) free to WDW Resort guests.

:welcome: to the DISboards, disneypfd!

In December, they have a special Mickey Christmas party that is also a ticketed event, and so, costs extra. It's only a couple of nights a week and it's held at the Magic Kingdom. The info for those parties should be available end of August-beginning of September.

I wouldn't count on the Disney after Dark event being continued, especially not into December. There are a lot of parties already taking up the evenings. Their event has not proven to be very popular by the people who have to pay for it; they have resorted to giving away tickets just to try to fill it up.
So, it may not be offered at that time. Time will tell!

Just to clarify the dates have been released but the tickets are not on sale yet. Nor do we know the ticket prices. Some speculate they will be increasing. But at least for planning purposes you can find the dates on WDW website. From home page click
"things to do"
>"events and tours"
>>scroll down to the items that say "schedule unavailable" and you will find the dates Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party (F.Y.I. this is referred to as MVMCP on here)
