Hey, yeah the dining plan can work out 2 be cheaper - esp. with the $ rate atm! Basically with the std plan you pay £19.99 (i believe) a day and get 1 counter service meal (a self service meal) and 1 table service (buffet or waiter service) and 1 snack a day. You can then use 2 of your credits for character & signature dining.
For us it makes sense we love signature meals so may have the deluxe plan (2 table meals) that way we can have a signature meal every night & can have breakfast & just snacks in the day. In nov we will prob just go for the normal dining plan then all our meals for the week are covered for £20 p.p per day - with the ex rate that is a good deal!!!
It definitely saves us money, as both times (2007 & this August) it was a freebie perk at time of booking.
You can obviously buy it, and you are free to select from the menu, not just to the cost of what you have paid (ie £20 p p p d)
Depends if you are going to eat 100% on site to start with. Also conflicting reports on pricing just now, Disney.co.uk says one price but if you ring up to add it they are telling you a different(more expensive) price
For the cheaper one, includes 2 counter service and 2 snacks a day, I worked out if you have to pay £20/day for it we would only just break even, would not be worth us doing it, especially if the £ rises again.
We prefer most our meals offsite, as well as staying offsite so not something I have ever considered but this year we have it free, now have to plan 16 nights of onsite dining, 1 counter service, 1 table service and 1 snack/day.
With the exchange rate being so poor its made a few more people look at the DDP options and pay upfront in £'s, if the £ rises again DDP is less attractive.
Another thing to consider is children. My two will be 12 and 10 when we go in October, so are classed by Disney as 'adults'. Four adults on the DDP with the amount my kids eat (partucularly my little 10yr old girl) doesn't seem worthwhile to me. With kids 9 and under it would look much more attractive.
Also, bear in mind with the TS meals you get a main course and dessert, no appetiser, and alcohol and service aren't included. If you're like me and quite fancy the starter but not the dessert then it's not so good either...
