I am mostly interested in the cruise that goes to Germany--which for this year goes to Kiel which Ive learned is the port that then does tours to Hamburg
also goes to Sweden Demark and Norway which we were already in

so now I see that for next year its listed as Hamburg and also has Hamburg listed twice so Im assuming that it could prossibly overnight in Hamburg which would be nice
but the 2 other ports weve already done

so now the confusing part--why for this year does it list port of Kiel but the tours are for Hamburg I actually thought Hamburg was farther inland to be a port--but Im sure Im wrong on this

but then for next year shows Hamburg as the port

I still have time to book for this year I was hoping that there would be tours for Berlin

Kiel is a port on the Baltic sea, one hour north of Hamburg by road. While Hamburg is inland, it is reachable by cruise ship by them sailing down the Elba from the North Sea. Cruise lines advertise Kiel as a port for Hamburg because they offer excursions there that all include two hours of transit by bus. Of course, docking in Hamburg will allow more time there than the stop at Kiel.

There really isn't much to do in Kiel itself. Most people with a Kiel stop go to Lubeck or Hamburg.

Hamburg is actually Germany‘s largest port. And sailing down the Elbe is quite fascinating. If you want to cruise to a German port, Hamburg is in my opinion the very best of them all.

You can’t really feasibly cruise to Berlin. It’s 2 hours from Rostock/Warnemünde. And DCL is not even stopping at that port either this year or next. Berlin is amazing, but I would always recommend to do it as an add on as you can usually get very affordable flights from nearly any European city (it’s more difficult to fly in from the US, nearly no direct flights).

The biggest nautical difference between Hamburg and Kiel is that Hamburg is on the North Sea, Kiel is on the Baltic Sea. If you want to go by ship from one two the other, you would have to go all around the Jutland peninsular (part of Denmark), pretty long way. Or you can go through the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, a canal that connects the two oceans. It that costs money and I have no idea if the Dream would fit.

Hamburg was also one of the most important ports for ocean liners going to the USA, so if your family emigrated from Germany or Eastern Europe to the US, the likelihood that they went through Hamburg is very high. There is even a museum about it: https://www.ballinstadt.de/en/

2 hour drive from Papenburg. I wonder?..
I seem to remember that when the Dream was built they did offer a very expensive excursion to go and visit Papenburg.

Btw, while it will be the Dreams first cruise call to Hamburg, she was there in dry dock after the first sea trials. I know that someone on the DIS from Germany went up to Hamburg to see her and posted about it.

ETA: that’s the thread from way back when:

Found something about the one from Warnemünde when the Dream was built:

DCL offers a tour of the Meyer Werft Shipyard and the Dream. The price seems a bit steep but it looks like an interesting and fun excursion. The text below is from the DCL site and I've highlighted text relating to restrictions on photography. Maybe we'll get some nice exterior photos from a cruiser who happens to select this excursion.

Building the Disney Dream - Shipyard Visit
Location: Warnemunde, Germany At a Glance
Activity Type: Signature Collection and Family Adventures
Activity Level: ModerateHelp
Duration: 11-11.5 hours
Adult Price: $2,900.00 (ages 10 and up)
Child Price: $2,900.00 (ages 5-9)
Ages: 5 And Up

On this tour you will:

After an approximate 45-minute van transfer to Rostock-Laage Airport, board your private chartered plane to Papenburg; flight time is approximately 50 minutes. Note: The plane is a Piper PA-42 Cheyenne with a maximum of 7 passengers. Also, this tour includes approximately 2 miles of walking at a steady pace, part of which will be on cobblestones and/or uphill. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Papenburg is home to the famous shipyard, Meyer Werft. Upon arrival in Papenburg, a private car/van will take you on a scenic tour through the town of Papenburg and the surrounding area.
Continue to a quaint restaurant, the Reiherhorst.
After a traditional German lunch (included in the price of this tour), continue to one of the largest indoor ship building facilities, the Meyer Werft shipyard.
Begin your guided walking tour at the Meyer Werft Visitor Center, which sees approximately 300,000 local visitors each year, where you will get to view the recently opened Disney Cruise Line exhibit.
Continue on your very own exclusive tour of the building dock where you will see the Disney Dream under construction. A guided inside visit of the building dock and inside areas of the ship will be the highlight as you receive a behind-the-scenes preview of Disney's next "modern classic" vessel. Note: photos are not allowed inside the vessel. Meet some of the crew members that will be opening the ship in early 2011.
After approximately 3 hours at the shipyard, return to the airport and fly back to Rostock-Laage Airport.
Drive back to Warnemunde.
For that price per person I would rather book another cruise!! 🤣
