Confused about use year

We used to have a DVC timeshare when our kids were young. Now that we have grandchildren, we're in the middle of buying one again. But it's been so long, I can really remember specifics about Use Year. I know we get new points every year at our use year month. If we don't use points for a specific year, can we transfer them to the following year? All of them?

Yes you are correct. I have June use year and get my points every June. If I wasn't able to use my June 2025 points this year, I could bank them for 2026 as long as I bank by the end of January 2026. If I don't bank by then, my points will expire on May 31, 2026.

If you have a June UY, yes, they'd be good until May 2027. But if you have a different UY, their expiration date would be based on that UY.

Basically, when you bank points you move them permanently into the following UY.

You have until the end of the 8th month of your UY to bank your points into the following UY.

(My UY is September, so I have to bank points no later than the end of April. Then they're good until the end of August the following year.)

However, you can only bank points once. Say you don't use all your points in year X. So you bank those points into the next year, year X+1. You can't book them into year X+2. However, during year X+1, Member Services will use your banked points first on any reservation they can!

I think the most important question to ask yourself when picking a desired UY is what 4 months of the year are you least likely to travel to Disney (and, to a lesser extent, least likely to need to cancel your reservation). Then, ideally, you pick a UY that comes right after those 4 months (although note there are no Jan, May, July, Nov UYs). If you have a reservation during the last 4 months of your UY and don't cancel prior to the start of those 4 months, those points will have to be used during those last 4 months or forfeited (I'm assuming you canceled 31+ days in advance - if not, points go into holding account with additional restrictions).
