Just ate a quick service meal and a 18 to 20 percent tip was suggested...I think it is crazy to suggest it, so instead of giving the 20% could we had left what we wanted to leave (say 10%)? thanks

Was it a quick service meal or a buffet? I have never tipped for a quick service. Was someone bringing you drink refills and taking away plates there?

we had to line up and get our meals, but someone did come and refill drinks. weird to ask for a tip for a quick service.

Pepper Market has always been that way, they expect a tip like a buffet. If I'm not mistaken, I think they used to automatically add 10%. It's been about 10 years since I stayed there.

As you yourself noted, the 20% is SUGGESTED. It's not mandatory. They aren't going to hold you hostage until you pony up the tip. :rotfl2: If you think the suggestion is out of line (I do) then leave as much or as little as you want.

Pepper Market has always been an exception to the rule re: CS restaurants. Have no idea why this system was ever put into place, but I've never liked it.

I read somewhere that the Pepper Market is run by a contractor, not by Disney. So they have their own rules.

We fell into that 20% tip suggestion the first couple days...but it seemed a bit much to me also. There was just 3 of us and they only refilled our drinks. We got to where we would just give our server a 5 dollar bill when we left breakfast each day. It is totally a personal decision. But that is what we did.

I've read that you can avoid the tip by just getting your order to go. Then you can take your food to one of the outdoor tables and enjoy! But I like air conditioning and refills on drinks so we haven't tried that yet.

Yes this is true. PM is not run by Disney, and it shows. The last time we were there the people who were working the food stations seemed annoyed, and at dinner there was a long wait for our food. In fact there were some stations left unattended for so long we just gave up, and ordered something else. PM also has a coffee & pastry take out window, which was indeed open, but not staffed during the entire length of our stay. The servers, on the other hand, were very pleasant, and efficient, so we did leave the suggested 18%, but no more since we did have to retrieve our own food. I know that there are many people who cannot get past the whole Pepper Market gratuity situation; you can always ask for your food to go. There is a nice patio with tables just outside PM facing the lake, where you can enjoy your meal.

I think the take out window is just an 'illusion'.:rotfl:

A lot of times we will get our food to go and then eat at the tables between Rix's and the lounge, unless it is really nice outside. I tip what I want to tip not what is suggested.

It's been a while since we ate there, but if I remember correctly the gratuity was automatically added at the cash register if you weren't on the dining plan. So one of us would pay and wait to see if it showed up on the register bill. Sometimes it did and sometimes not. If it didn't we left it on the table. I think it was an automatic 10% when it was added.

Guys, this really belongs on the Restaurants board. I'm not going to move it there, as they have a tipping thread where all discussion on tips is to take place. So, I'm going to close this, and suggest that anyone who's interested continue the discussion on the Restaurants board tipping thread.
