Confirmed New Security measures coming to Disney Parks

If this is like sports event/concert security; then I am fine with it. But if it's anything close to the airport type security theatre where you get naked scans, pat downs, and have to take off your shoes and watches, then I will stop going to the parks. TSA is completely ineffective (check their own recent report where 96% of undercover agents were able to get weapons through) and unnecessarily intrusive to the average traveller, something Disney World should not be.

Agree completely...I've read all the press about TSA for a number of year and it is an elaborate, complicated dog and pony show because the results/net have holes in it.

It Was poorly thought out and doesn't stress proper training and compensation to ensure performance (who does that sound like?)

Its a symptom of the big mistake known as homeland security - as dumb of an Orwellian/Bradbury moniker as I've ever heard.

Personally, I do not fear terrorists as much as the wackos...like the guy last week...just what was he planning to do?

While the number of terrorist inspired incidents has increased, I agree that fear should not make us cower in our homes (are we even totally safe there???), but a healthy dose of awareness of surroundings would not hurt.

The ones more likely to do damage to guests are the copy-cats and those who may not be mentally healthy. And adding measures to hopefully prevent/dissuade those kinds of threats are not only prudent, but necessary. I would imagine that a certain amount is being required as "due diligence" measures...if something did happen (heaven forbid), the Disney Company is certainly not wanting the bad publicity, or accusations that they should have done more to protect those visitors and employees.

I'm not sure Osama bin Laden really cared about the politics of America so much. These terror groups want to create terror so that they can come in and force their rules upon the group. It didn't really work here. We may have to take our shoes off in the airport and walk through metal detectors but we still have a ton of freedom compared to many places. A lot of what Osama bi Laden and ISIS are doing is tit for tat type retaliation. France was a direct target because they are American allies and closer to get to than America. We bombed them they attacked Paris. Don't forget all of this happened after Dessert Storm in the 90s. We want to "liberate" the world when some places in the world are okay living the way they were before the western world came in and let war break out.

When it comes to large places such as WDW, better safe than sorry. If something were to happen there (God forbid), the first thing the majority of people would be saying is "why didn't Disney do more to ensure this didn't happen?". I'm surprised it took them this long to begin implementing further security measures, much like some posters have expressed in this thread. I don't have an issue with amped security, and considering how many people go to Disney World on a daily basis...honestly, I see it as a necessity to have some sort of metal detectors put in place. So nope, don't have an issue with an increase in security measures.

It's been a long time coming. I'm surprised that it has taken this long actually. Every sports game you go to requires walking through a metal detector now.

My concern is a sports venue is one thing. WDW another. How many people visit a sporting even with a stroller packed to the gills? How many small kids are at games vs how many visit Disney World? There is a big difference between a bunch of adults planning on spending a few hours at a game being searched and a whole family with a stroller loaded down with diapers and food for a day in the parks being searched.

My concern is a sports venue is one thing. WDW another. How many people visit a sporting even with a stroller packed to the gills? How many small kids are at games vs how many visit Disney World? There is a big difference between a bunch of adults planning on spending a few hours at a game being searched and a whole family with a stroller loaded down with diapers and food for a day in the parks being searched.

And just think of how much "fame" a crazy gunman would gain from attacking a venue filled with young children, especially one known as the happiest place on earth. To me Disney has been an obvious target for quite some time. I think that the additional security will be worth the slight inconvenience.

Apparently the toy gun and costume rules will go into effect tomorrow. I haven't seen word if the metal detectors are happening or not. This will be for both WDW and Disneyland.

It would still be easy enough to attack WDW. A gunman on the bus. One at a resort. One at Disney Springs. At some point you have to accept that there is no way to make us totally safe. I'm not sold that metal detectors turned down as low as they would have to be are much of a deterrent.

And we can only hope that metal detectors at WDW would be a slight inconvenience.

Of course there's no way to ensure we are totally safe. There never will be. That doesn't mean we should just sit back and do nothing. This feels like the same type of argument given by gun lovers who are completely against any changes to existing gun laws.

Sigh all you like. It will not do what you seem to think it will do. And this has nothing to do with some sort of pro-gun sentiment.

There is simply no difference between gunning people down at the entrance to the Magic Kingdom and gunning people down in the Magic Kingdom, so it doesn't deter the "crazy gunman" scenario at all.

Orlando Sentinel just posted that the metal detectors are installed today at Disney, Universal and Sea World with:
- WDW will not say how long they will be in place
- Universal said they are testing but said long used for special events such as HHN.
- Sea World says part of holidays enhanced security

DL also getting metal detectors.

Hoping this part is not true - "WDW banning 14 and older from wearing costumes - even at Halloween parties."

WDWMagic photos seem to back this statement they made "Three metal detector are now in place at the Magic Kingdom alongside the bag check area. A random sampling of guests will be sent through the scanners, which are being operated by a third party security firm, CSC."

Oh I can see it now, all the uproar about profiling happening .... this is about to get interesting.

Airport style 3d scanners? I'm done with WDW. What a disaster. This makes no one safer, if anything it will be easier for a shooter to take out a mass of people standing in a herd/line waiting to get in the parks. Security theater that doesn't make anyone safer.
