Ok, this is a dumb, andn not necessary queastion. UMM, I'm just curious. Almost 2 years ago,( I was 10 at the time) I was playing in the playground,(tag). Suddenly, I wake up on the floor infront of a wall. I guessed I tripped or something and must have hit my head on the wall with lots of speed. I woke up and found every1 staring at me. I guess I wasout for a minute or so. I woke up with this really bad pain/pressure(more pain than pressure) on the upper part of my head. I guess that's where I got hit) I'm assuming/guessing too much!:) Like, 10 seconds later, I got up and started walking with no prblem with a slight headache. Following the accident, I had this weird sensation in my head that went on for months. So, my question is that should I have gone to the docotr at that time? Just curious. I mean, it's been 2 years, everything turned out okay!

I researched it and could it have been that I suffered a concusion. It sayas that in a GRADE 3 concussion, a person looses consciuossness even just for a few seconds. It's at : Kidshealth.org

Thanks!

Well, it's been 2 years. Nothing to do about it now, but yes, anyone who loses consciousness after a head injury needs to be evaluated in the emergency room. It sounds like you did have a concussion. Hopefully, that will just be one of those "life lessons". Now you know what to do after a serious head injury:)

Traumatic Brain Injuries as huge in youth and young adults. Also almost 70% of the soldiers returning from Iraq have TBIs. Yet, they go undiagnosed!

Anytime you hit your head and loose consciousness you need to seek medical attention. There could be damage to the brain with long term affects.

well, a friend of mine in college had what his parent's figured was a minor concussion when he was a kid (8 or 10 yrs old). he had taken a fall off a swing set and konked himself pretty good but did'nt black out and seemed fine except for a whopper of a headache that nite. 10 years later as a young adult the young man has on and off complaints of what were being diagnosed as migranes (got bad headaches, nauseu, the auras-typical migrane symptoms). the 'migranes' got realy horrendous such that he would scream out in pain that his head felt like it was going to explode. during one his family took him to an er where they did an mri on him and saw what they feared was a tumor. within a few days he had to have brain surgery during which the doctors found that a blood vessel had at some point been injured and over time had changed shape such that it damaged surrounding tissue. the issue was repaired and he was fine. the realy interesting (to me) side effect of the surgery had to do with something else. this was a kid who was the youngest of 3 or 4 siblings-the other sibs were all very good athletes and very physicaly co-ordinated. my friend not so much, but his parents just figured it was'nt abnormal for one sib in a family not to share the physical attributes of the others. after the surgery this guy's physical ability changed dramaticly-he was able to do sports much better and was much better co-ordinated. he mentioned this to his doctors and they attributed this to the area in his brain where the injury had it occured-apparantly it was one in which balance and co-ordiantion can be heavily influenced.

my ds is 11. when he was 3 he climbed up on his sister's top bunk bed and fell off directly onto his head. he was seen at the hospital and was diagnosed with a minor concussion. at around age 9 he began having symptoms similar to those of migranes so we took him in to the doctor. before they ran any other tests they questioned us about any history of head injuries and upon hearing of the fall ran a cat-scan to rule out issue similar to my friends. with ds it is migranes-but apparantly doctors take even past head injuries serious enough that with some symptoms they want to rule out complications long after the original event.

Honey, if I'm reading this right you would be about 12 now? (I thought you had to be at least 13 to post on message boards). Please don't think I'm trying to be condescending, but instead of researching it on the internet and asking advice from people who are not experts in it (unless there is a neurologist on the board), you need to talk to your parents and voice your concerns. Anytime you lose consciousness you do need to see a doctor, and this might be something to bring up with them.

Only your doctor can diagnose you. Websites like WebMD are good resources, but they are no substitute for talking with your parents and your doctor. When you start researching symptoms on the internet, it can be very easy to convince yourself that you have all kinds of illnesses. Bring this up with your parents and your doctor the next time you see them. Good luck!

First of all, you posted at 12:11 a.m., right? Well, you posted around the time I was born, so I'm 13! I did tell my mom, she was a bit concerened and told me that I should have told it to her. But, obviously, I can't go see the doctor, now...it's WAY too late! Oh, well, as another poster said, this is a " life lesson." Thanks for replying.

Happy Birthday! I was shocked to see a poster so young. I run my own website with a BBS and the standard cut off age is 13, but I guess that's not the case with this board. It's nice that you have a place where you can come.

Thank you for telling your mom, you did the right thing. Perhaps the next time you are at a check up you can bring it up with your doctor and she what s/he says. If nothing else, they will have a heads up so if you have some problems later they will know what to connect it to.

:bday:

There is a law known as COPPA that is about persons under the age of 13 and their personal informations. Many online sweepstakes, websites, boards and chat rooms rather say 13+ to avoid dealing with COPPA.

You have met one of my favourite kids on this board and mature for her age. She is a great kid.

I forgot about COPPA. Although my board is for a young adult book, I do not use it because of the liability issues with having younger posters. (Plus, I'm not quite the large operation DIS is).

This is going to date me, but I remember when the internet first became mainstream. We had AOL and I used to go to the chatrooms all the time (in elementary school). Of course, at that time you didn't have quite the volume of people (creepy and otherwise) you have today. I kind of miss those days. :(
