My dd Ashli is really sick right now and she has me worried. She's been throwing up for a couple of days and keeping very little down. There is a bug going around here that has hit Ash especially hard (the kid that never, ever get sick!) I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for things that they can keep down when they are really sick? Water makes her sick and so do popcicles and I'm afraid Ashli will end up in the hospital with an IV if we can't find something to stay down today. Ashli says the popcicles are making her sick because they are too sweet so I thought about getting the pedilite (sp?) ones that I've heard about. I figured they probably don't have as much sugar and her stomach might be able to handle them better. Any suggestions of fluids or the like that work for you would be appreciated.

Try very small sips of Coke or gingerale...I mean like maybe a 1/4 cup at a time...wait 30 minutes...if she keeps that down...repeat. The carbon dioxide may help. I would hold off on any gatorade till she can keep it down.

I've always found that flat ginger ale settles the stomach. I just pour the ginger ale into a glass and stir it a bit to get the fizziness out of it.

I've also fed my kids fruits like oranges and grapes, ones where they're kind of juicy. They might throw it up eventually but I think some of the liquid stays in the body.

Good luck and hopefully Ashli won't be sick for too long!

when i had norwalk virus, i was told by the nurse to try 1 tablespoon of FLAT clear soda every 7 minutes. (where do they come up with this stuff? LOL)

at any rate, i couldn't keep that down either and i spent the night in the hospital. by time time i got there i was so dehydrated that i could hardly stand up and i almost passed out.

i know you don't want to take her in to get an IV, but after i had fluids pushed i felt SO much better.

If she can keep the pede-a-lite (or however you spell it!) down, that would be perfect.

not too sweet.

I know they make a popsicle version of it too.

A roommate and I used ped. once when we had REALLY bad hangovers....worked well.

My son (age 17) got hit with a bug last year in while on vacation in Williamsburg. Same thing as your daughter - couldn't even keep water down. On the 3rd day, I took him to the emergency room, where they gave him and IV (he was dehydrated) and some meds to help settle his stomach. It helped somewhat. His stomach was so messed up after all that, that for the next couple weeks, he was still vomiting a lot. I think it ended up being psychological and he kept thinking that if he ate, he would vomit, so he stopped eating!

His doctors did a GI and found that his duodedum (sp?) was very irritated and he would have ended up with an ulcer unless they took care of the problem. They put him on a prescription to heal whatever damage was done by all the vomiting. It worked and he is fine now.

I wouldn't wait much longer to get her to the hospital if she doesn't keep anything down. Dehydration is a serious issue, but it's also not the only issue you may end up dealing with.

Good luck! I really hope she feels better!

I dealt with something very similar with similar results. I hate hopitals and I.V.'s, but it felt great to be hydrated.

Have her take a bath..her body will absorb the water keeping her from dehydrating.

Is she dehydrated>> Are her lips cracked or look "deflated"? When you pinch her skin, does it stay pinched when you let go..if so...she needs medical attention right away.
Some liquid will stay in even if she is trowing up...is she urinating??

Bless her heart.

I hope she feels better soon.

We have always done 7-up or gatorade in tiny amounts every hour or so.

Keep us posted :)

Hope she gets better soon! Does she have any symptoms of dehydration yet?

I would stress on tiny, tiny sipd of whatever she wants to try. I am talking about starting off with less than a teaspoon, waiting 10-15 minutes, than another, waiting than another. Once she can keep that down, increase the amount very slowly.

I have had luck with taking this for severe vomiting, but for the life of me can't recall its name. It is a syrup, cherry flavor I think, that you take every 15-30 minutes until the vomiting stops. Ask at the pharmacy, they might know what I am talking about.

Poor thing :( . I would try the semi-flat soda first. I don't know of any kid, mine included, that likes the pedilite stuff. I'd go with ginger ale because to me its not as sweet as coke. Have you tried a citrus ice pop? Maybe she wouldn't find those as sweet.

Also like caitycaity said as much as you don't want to go the Iv route it would probably make her feel a whole lot better.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I tried some of them and one of them worked! She is able to keep flat ginger ale down. Overall it appears she is doing better tonight and I really appreciate everyone's suggestions. I really didn't want her to have to get an IV but I wouldn't have hesitated if it became necessary.

I was not going to add any suggestions, Keli, but there at the end was glad to read Asli is doing better. Always hate seeing our DIS kids hurting.

I am so glad that she is feeling better! There isn't anything harder than seeing your children in trouble!

Keli,

Glad to hear that Ashli is feeling better. She is a beautiful girl.

So glad to hear she is turning the corner! Hope the rest of the night went as well and today finds her even better!
