DS 10 came home today with a sheet from computer class. There's a list of terms, with blank spaces to fill in the definitions.
I have to add, today was the FIRST DAY of of this class, this year. Prior years they have had computer experience with learning programs, but have never had any online experience.

How would one 'define' these in simple terms? How is a 10 year old supposed to do this, especially with no, or limited online experience? I can explain most to him, but I'm very wordy

Well, let me give this a try...

Web Page....place where you find specific information on a topic

Web Address....where a web page "lives" on the Internet

Web Browsers....the tool used to view pages on the internet

Foward and Back...ways to move between pages

Stop...halts an information transfer

Refresh...updates a web page

Home...the page that automatically opens when you start a web browser

Favorites...a list of places you routinely visit on the Internet

History...a list of places you have been on the Internet in the recent past. This list changes as opposed to "Favorites" which stays the same until the user makes changes

Toolbars...a horizontal list of buttons that help the user effectively use the browser

Status Bar...tells the user how much of the page is loaded (This is pretty much a Netscape thing)

Icon..a picture representation of a program

Scroll Bar...allows the user to move up and down on a web page

Hyperlink...a way to move to another web site from within a web page

HTML...HyperText Markup Language....the computer language behind the graphical web page

Java...a web language that allows high level functions on a web page

Modem...a telephone line based connection to the Internet

Servers...stores many web pages usually related in some manner...also referred to as a hub

Baud Speed...the rate of connection on a modem...the fastest modems are 56K

good luck to your DS, I hope this helps some...you can also show him how to doa simple search for some of the answers by going to sites like www.askjeeves.com and presenting the questions.

wow! these are great MrsV98

I'd be WAY too wordy Donna...on the ones that I could explain at all! :)

You got most of them

Status Bar- IE has it also (you can turn it off and on from the view menu) It's the bar at the bottom that shows you what is going on

Modem- that is the actual board for an internal modem or an external box that you plug the phone line into

Server.. kind of but a "hub" is a totally different thing. It's a box that network cables plug into

Donna, here is how I would simply describe these. I hope it helps a little.

Oops... I took so long going back and forth that I didn't see this was finished by someone else. But these are how I look at them in as simple terms as possible.

Web page: Place on the internet where information is shown

Web address: Specific location of a web page.

Web Browsers: software used to look at information on a web page

Foward and Back: buttons used to see pages you have just viewed.

Stop: Halts the transfer of information from the web page

Refresh: reloads the webpage with most updated information available for the web page

Home: brings you to a web page that loads when you open a web browser

Favorites: List of all web pages chosen to be stored for future reference

History: List of previously viewed web sites

Toolbars: A bar on the screen that shows most useful functions for the software running

Status Bar: On an internet browser, shows how much information has been transfered or shows errors.

Icon: small picture or graphic that usually leads to the performance of a function

Scroll Bar: when clicked will let you go from top to the bottom of a webpage

Hyperlink: When clicked will bring you to a new web page

HTML: Hyper Text Markup Language -- programing language that can be used to create a web page

Java: Another programming language that can be used to create a web page (most common now)

Modem: modulator-demodulator Takes information and changes it so that it can be tranfered across phone lines

Servers: Machine that stores & controls information for specific web pages

Baud Speed: rate that information is transferred across phone lines

Thanks so much for your replies. I took him to my computer and browsed around a bit and "pointed" out most things, describing what they do...then he used his own words (some just as wordy as I :p ) for his descriptions. He got stuck on a few, I'm going to print out your responses and try to "explain" without just giving him the direct answers. This was a great help, thanks again :)
