Complicated transfer Question...

Okay let's see if I can explain this correctly...

So we have 106 pts avail to use this year and we want to do a reservation that will require 224 pts total. We can borrow 100 from the following year but will still be short by about 18 pts.

For 1/2 of the trip, if we were able to get standard view (this is for BLT) which is not avail right now, we would save 12 pts. and therefore only need 6 extra points.

I called MS and asked if we purchased the xtra pts from them and then waitlisted for BLT standard and it came through (which could happen:wizard:), would we be able to get the money back for the now unneccesary xtra pts. The answer was no but that the borrowed pts from the following year would go back into that year to be used for another trip. Okay, I am fine with that.

Question is, if we got a transfer for those xtra points from another member, (instead of purchasing them from MS) would the same be true as above? Basically putting our extra pts back into the other use year?

I know it's not a ton of points or money but every little bit counts with a trip to the world!

Thanks!!;)

That is correct. When you buy "one time use" points from DVC for $15 each, the transaction is non-refundable.

...but that the borrowed pts from the following year would go back into that year to be used for another trip.

Technically that is not correct. Borrowed points CANNOT be un-borrowed. That is specifically against policy--when you actually borrow the points they will flat-out tell you that "borrowing is a final transaction."

However what you could do is leave some of your current year points unused under the cheaper reservation and then BANK those points into the next Use Year. The net effect is pretty much the same as un-borrowing points. However, you do need to be aware of your banking deadline. If your waitlist request comes through after your deadline to bank those points, you will be unable to bank them and booking the cheaper room won't end up saving you anything.

If you want a better explanation, post your Use Year and the dates you are trying to reserve and we can walk through it.

For the most part, yes is is the same. You could still bank your current year points if the cheaper reservation came through. But note it tends to be difficult to arrange a small point transfer. All members are limited to ONE transfer per year. As such, most people who are seeking a transfer for profit (which is technically prohibited by program rules) tend to be looking for someone willing to take on more than just 18 points.

No DVC only puts borrowed points back when you buy from them. Are you planning on doing an add on? Or using one time use points?
I don't think purchasing One Time Use Points would qualify. See the quote below from the Home Resort Rules and Regs.

Once Borrowed, Home Resort Vacation Points cannot be returned to their original Use Year and will expire if not used by the end of the Use Year into which they were Borrowed, except that in the event Club Members purchase an additional Ownership Interest after Borrowing Home Resort Vacation Points, Club Members may substitute newly allocated Home Resort Vacation Points of a current Use Year for the Borrowed Home Resort Vacation Points that were used toward a future reservation and the Borrowed Home Resort Vacation Points will be returned to their original Use Year.

Wow, okay thanks for the replies so far...
that is interesting...it does seem like it may be just easier for the xtra few bucks to buy direct from Disney in this case...

Not sure when your trip will be, but want to make sure that you know that the points you purchase from DVC can only be used 7 months or less from arrival.

Standard view rooms are usually all gone by the time the 7 month window opens, but as you say, it is possible for a waitlist to work.

If you own at BLT, have you considered booking all of the standard view nights that you need at 11 months, and then buying the extra points as needed at the 7 month window for the Lake view nights? Lake view is much more likely to be available at 7 months.

Of course I realize that I have assumed you are talking about BLT points and that you are talking abut a future trip for which the 11 month window will be available to get the Standard view villas. If you are using all non-BLT points, you are going to need a back up plan since the standard views are very difficult to get at 7 months.
